Playing teams you've never heard of on a week's notice, poor crowds, many mismatches are all weak points for the playoffs. They make no money for the University. There are, of course, some great ones, but as I started the conversation, we tend to embellish the FCS playoffs because that's all we have.
That's a completely fair point, and I don't mean to glorify the FCS; both FCS and FBS have their pros and cons. I may be a bit biased in some ways, as I grew up in a small but football-loving town, and to be honest I really enjoy the "smaller" atmosphere at times, where's it's just a bunch of people who really love their team (even ones I've hardly heard of) and not much of the extra show and BS that comes with being a primetime game where it takes hours to find parking, hours to leave after, and media timeouts constantly interrupt the flow of the game.
Some of it for me is also admittedly FBS fatigue. My degrees came from three P5 schools, and I've gotten annoyed with seeing the P5 increasingly become a NFL-Lite that add geographically or competitively nonsense members for the sake of media money while saying "too f###[#] bad" to the loss of long-standing regional rivalries that made the sport so great.
Again, obviously the FBS has some great aspects. Those big-time games can be a lot of fun, the atmosphere at some stadiums incredible. Not denying that. I just enjoy both the FCS and FBS for their own strengths, and like that they're so different.
OK, me too. NFL, not so much.
