Next up Griz at Reno 3/16 CBI Tournament

Reno shot out of their ass for most of that half...they are usually terrible from downtown but not tonight.

Pretty sketchy job down the stretch by the zebras too.

When one team is allowed to play defense and the other isn't because of foul trouble and whistle happy refs it's going to lead to a lot of easy buckets unfortunately... and when there isn't an easy bucket a trip to the FT line.

Refs kept them in the game in the first half with FTs and unfortunately handed it to them in the 2nd half continuing what they did in the first half. It started out so well too then all of a sudden there were those 7 fouls in a row called on the Griz keeping Nevada in the game in the first half. Had a bad bad feeling things were going to be a bit ugly like that in the 2nd half too, but hoped it wouldn't.

Griz go 29-57 shooting (50.9%) and 12-22 (54.5%) from 3 on the game.

Nevada shoots 24-52 (46.2%) and 8-16 (50%) from 3 for the game...but 23-26 from the line.

Agreed. It was that bad... I was hoping we'd have a game ref'd more like the one against Weber but instead we got Big Sky-esque refs on one end and something entirely different on the other.

It's not like Nevada is overly aggressive either drawing these fouls... It's just whistle after whistle against the Griz..

I don't usually gripe about the refs, because it usually evens out, but this one is just ridiculous. 26 foul shots for Nevada vs 6 for UM?!! The refs totally decided this game ... and made it almost unwatchable.

Somehow, I don't even feel bad about it. Don't get me wrong ... I feel really bad for the players. But a game like this, where the officiating was so crazy ... it makes you want to puke, but it basically tells you the team had no chance, no matter how well or poorly they played. You just have to put it behind you (it may take more than a few beers to do that, however).

Regardless of "blah" reffing or not, Coach Decuire has gotta figure out how to get his team's to finish. It is something they've really struggled with in his 2 seasons as coach.

Reminds me quite a bit of the game against Washington on the road a few years ago. Griz shot 8 FTs in that game to Washington's 26... It was one of those games where you just got the feeling that the refs weren't going to allow the small-conference road team to pull the upset. If I remember right that game's last 8 mins or so had call after call go against the Griz sort of like stretches in this game.

This game was a lot like that. Early in the first half things were looking good... then 7 fouls in a row on the Griz in a period of 4 1/2 minutes. Krslovic getting his 4th foul early in the 2nd half was a huge blow too.

DeCuire mentioned it in the post game show. Fouls on one end were not fouls on the other. With the Griz not being able to play physical defense like Nevada was allowed to, which put the Griz in foul trouble, it caused the Griz to back off a bit on defense to avoid picking up even more fouls. That leads to easy buckets for Nevada, and more fouls when the Griz try to get a stop on D.

Hate ending the season with a game like that. A game like the one against Weber where it's well ref'd, the players decided it and all that...that's fine. A game like this though...bleh...

ARGH!!!!! I hate losing the last 2 games we played the way we did. Not a good time for me to post much more on this game.
 
Very, very strangely reffed game. It would be hard for any team to win against that kind of disparity. Griz should have been up by 16-18 at half, except for the double bonus handed to the wolfpack. The most puzzling call of the game was critical, when Martin's fast break bucket was waved off. One can mention mental toughness, but you know these kids know when they're getting homered. Coach DeCuire talked about being mentally tougher, but he paused and said that's hard when you're not allowed to play defense. Hard to ignore that kind of thing.

Given the circumstances, I thought they played very tough. But a 20-point difference at the FT line is hard to overcome in ANY scenario.

Well, that was a kick in the junk. Great season, Griz, just a disappointing end. Next season starts tomorrow and on we start to the Big Dance next year!

And Oguine was a net deficit tonight, 29 minutes but only four points, several misses at the basket. He really threw up some bad ones.

But, that long low pass by DeJong to Walter Wright to a fast break basket. That was some quick thinking.

Couldn't agree more. The Nevada announcers were quite shocked at that call too. The Griz played tough though despite what was going on starting at about the 8 minute mark in the first half. Sure there were some mistakes and bad turnovers (Nevada had plenty as well) but the Griz busted their asses out there & shouldn't hang their heads over this loss. That was a good Nevada team, and combine that with the VERY lopsided officiating issues and that's hard to overcome.

Great season for the Griz. Wish it had ended with a nice run in the CBI (or better yet of course an NCAA tournament bid) but still a very good season. The Griz get 20+ wins for the 2nd year in a row under DeCuire. He's the only Griz coach to do that in his first 2 seasons! Also joins Montgomery, Tinkle, and Taylor as the only coaches for the Griz to have back to back 20 win seasons.
 
This is my biggest complaint about college basketball--hometown refs. Always has been, always will be. Every team has faced it, and every team responds by getting back even at home, so the cycle is eternal. We might have expected it, but let's be honest: We've dished out a few "homers" ourselves.
