Next Up at #2 Kansas 12/19

Kansas shooting better during game than we ever have in pregame warm ups. Also noted at least twice Breunig yelling at a teammate. Must be getting frustrated with road performance.

Agree Grind. Athleticism is nice but BB talent also is shooting and scoring. It's not just bad luck.
Never expected talent to be close to Kansas but this is eye opening

One promising sign, for me at least. I've been wondering if Boehning can play at this level, and I'm seeing signs he can. Grabbing a few rebounds, playing some defense, even showing a little offense. Long ways to go, but there's potential there....and the Griz can sure use a big body...especially with Bruenig graduating at the end of the season.

Put me in the "why can't we shoot a little better?" camp. I understand that Kansas is longer and more athletic and will win the game. But I get frustrated when we miss so many open shots that we would lose a BSC game playing like this. It's obvious we're going in with a nervous, anxious mindset.

But I do like Boehning and Dejong - going to be fun seeing them continue to get better this year!

I would LIKE to hang with Kansas. The Griz Will be lucky to score 50 points, meanwhile Kansas will score well over the century mark.

A least wed held KU to under the century mark.

voice of pessimism here....this team is not very good----numerous mid majors---ark.little-rock,valpo,chattanooga,monmouth, st.mary's,ut-arlington,south Dakota st. ----would never lose by 40 ..to anyone...we are just not there yet. I have faith in Travis but getting impatient & discouraged..these guys just are not a very good team. I long for Tinkle's teams , who actually won a game in NCAA's..the question is can these guys even compete for bigsky? have my doubts...maybe in a few more years?

Dude....it is year 2 for TD....chill for a minute.....maybe you should find the OSU board.....

Uhhh - Tinkles teams never won a game in the NCAA tourney - closest they came was losing by 5(?) to New Mexico as a 13/14 seed. Got killed in all the other appearances.

1. Mid majors (even good mid-majors) get blown out by the Kansas type teams fairly frequently. It happens. Hell, UCLA (from a major conference) who went to the Sweet 16 last year lost to Kentucky 83-44. Halftime score was 41-7. It happens. Sometimes you have an absolutely shitty game and when that shitty game is combined with being against the best competition out there it's going to look damn ugly.

The Griz just played the #2 team in the country, who would be #1 if they hadn't blown a fairly significant second half lead against Michigan State. This is also a Kansas team that outscored Tinkle's Oregon State 54-28 in the 2nd half of their game. They have a lot of firepower and are the type of team (in terms of length and athleticism) that the Griz will struggle against. DeCuire is recruiting players that will hopefully match up better against teams like that in the future.

2. It's DeCuire's 2nd year. I like Tinkle a lot and think he was a hell of a recruiter & coach, but he left some serious holes by taking chances on what were probably some "project" type players. DeCuire is working with a mix of his players and Tinkle's players still.

3. That was coach K that won in the NCAA tournament against Nevada, not Tinkle's team. The last two trips for Tinkle's teams in the NCAA ended up with scores of 73-49 against Wisconsin and 81-34 against Syracuse. What win are you remembering in the NCAA?

4. We'll be fine in the Big Sky. The Big Sky isn't loaded with Kansas level talent, length or athleticism. If the Griz can hang with Gonzaga at Gonzaga, Beat Boise State and Crush San Francisco we can compete just fine in the Big Sky.

Agree on all points.

Excellent brief analysis, Potomac. However, there are some troubling signs. Montana played an excellent first-half floor game (well scouted and coached), but numerous wide open, uncontested shots were missed. That has been an issue so far this season, and it has not resolved, unfortunately.

This team plays a solid floor game. But with such poor shooting percentages, not many D1 teams can win on the road. Comparative stats with last season illustrate this. I'd like to chalk it up to newcomers adjusting, but that simply is not the case.

I'm not at all put off by this result. Kansas is one of the best defensive teams I have seen in a long time. Meantime, Montana is only at the early dawn of the Travis DeCuire era--the "dawn" being Boehning, Oguine, Moorehead and DeJong, two true freshmen and two redshirts who knew nothing but Montana high school basketball. These kids are getting thrown to the wolves right now, but in another year or two, with help on the way, they'll be running with the wolves. Boehning's line especially gives me great optimism. From a kid who two years ago barely scored in the Montana-Wyoming high school all-star series, he scores four points and grabs three rebounds against Kansas. Since he was one of my biggest question marks at the beginning of this year, I feel the answer is going to be a huge positive before this season is out.

And let's not forget, in basketball, we are up against the best of the Best, not some FCS "power" like North Dakota State or Jacksonville State. We're playing with the Big Kids here, not the tykes of some rural neighborhood.

Meantime, it appears to me that Riley Bradshaw is the odd man out. If he approaches his senior year having had such little playing time, I would suspect his scholarship would be up in the air, especially given the talent DeCuire seems capable of recruiting. Sadly, he may not be a part of Montana's future.

good points Potomac and others. My error on Tinkle & NCAA's.I will limit my opinions and hope for the future. I have total faith in TD and his goals for Griz hoops..just get discouraged at this teams inconsistency.

I see U-dub lost at home to that powerhouse that is.....Oakland...

And Boise (who we beat) beat top 25 ranked Oregon earlier.

That's College Basketball... upsets happen sometimes.

Northern Iowa is beating #5 ranked (and undefeated) Iowa State @Iowa State right now.

He had a very tough non-conference schedule again this year, it'll likely be top 25 like it was last year too. Probably better than last years. We took some lumps, had some positives though (like beating Boise, crushing San Francisco and almost grabbing a win @Gonzaga).

Conference season starts soon and hopefully the experience & physical play faced in the non-conference will help us in conference. I do wish we had played Kansas earlier in the season though instead & had a more winnable game as the last D1 game on our non-conference schedule. My worry is that a couple beatings in a row (Washington and Kansas) might be a bit demoralizing and affect us negatively early on in conference. Hopefully not though.
