New Turf x Montana Knife Company

There is a plastic panel floor that connects and protects it, but given the expense, why not save it a little stress before the inaugural game?
I'd imagine that the reward is just that much greater than the risk when they are running the numbers. These concerts are a big deal for the athletic program, the University, and the community. I'd guess that when they sat down and looked at the numbers, the money coming in was worth far more than the cost of the wear and tear.

Wa-Griz just needs a fully retractable floor like what Allegiant Stadium has. Problem solved.

On a more serious note, the stadium concerts bring in a lot of money as mentioned, and if there's going to be an on-field sponsor that's willing to help offset the cost of a new turf field every 10ish years, then that makes the wear & tear easier to stomach.

If we are really worried about wear and tear, I would say that the use the field gets from non-Griz FB events would be the larger concern. All the high school football games, club, and intramural sports certainly result in more wear & tear than a few concerts a year.

The Luke Bryan Concert is August 1st. I imagine the athletic department wants full use of the stadium the week prior to the opener on August 28th. That three weeks in August doesn't give much margin for error if something goes wrong. I suspect the decision to put the turf down before the concerts was a strategy to avoid any embarrassing surprises at the last minute. I doubt the concerts create that much wear and tear.

On a related note, I went for a run on campus the other day and ran by lot Z. They have dozens of tubs full of rubber pellets in the parking lot for the installation. It took me a minute to figure out what the heck I was looking at!

i wonder what the carcinogenic levels of those pellets is these days? especially when it's new, that stuff kicks up when people get tackled on it, and the players will be getting a lung full of dust when they face plant on it.

OR....and hear me out on this.....maybe inhaling a lung full of rubber dust will be like getting bitten by a radioactive spider, or being exposed to a gamma bomb. could potentially make us scary good. a pencil-neck like you should realize this, argh!. duh. it's basic science.

Sure does bring a lot of product performance, maintenance questions etc. We ask a whole lot out of the turf technology given full exposure to year round weather extremes alone, throw in the amount of incursion from events one and all. Ok now, how about a dome? Does the city/county/region need an alternative site for large scale multi-events?
A dome... that's funny.

Don't laugh, pard. There are a lot of kickass FCS domes out there.

What do we know about set-asides of funds from these big events to refurbish the stadium--it is sorely needed.

I believe there are plans in the works for stadium refresh, new boxes and additional expansion seats. Number I heard a couple years ago was $150mil.

Tampa Bay Rays used coconut and sand instead of rubber on the new turf at the trop. Was watching a game this week and the announcers talked about how it’s supposed to help with the turf and give a more true bounce to the ball. I know different sports but thought it was interesting

Looks like some rando selling turf on Facebook marketplace. Demand from fans has been loud since the day it was announced that the turf would be changed. Amazing to me that UM leadership could not find a way to profit off of this themselves. The guy will sell all 30 rolls, equivalent to 3 new QB club members. Lazy from UM.

If this is true, the reason why UM didn't sell it may depend on the answer to another question: Has UM ever sold the old turf before?

Not sure, just saw it and was surprised that after all the folks online asking for ways to find and buy it that there was no effort to do so. Maybe cost more to sell than it was worth but feels like an opportunity to make more money for NIL, etc.

At least it doesn't look like the guy is selling them for that much.

I'd be all over that if I was a Griz fan.
