New Mexico looking for BB coach

Wayne is close to the lowest paid D1 coach out there...$122k. Huge step up in pay and conference and he could stay out west. Could be a good move for him

I am frankly surprised his name is not thrown out there more unless he is saying no for right now to everyone

Maybe JGriz77 is confusing the griz with the lady griz - the ladies have a coach that has dominated the conference for the last 25 years, and their last tourney win was 1995 (or 1996?). Long, long time, but nobody really cares about womens bball in the bigsigh conference.

I'm pretty sure you did a poll on who wants Tinkle gone or not. Regardless, I don't care what the ratio is. What I do know is that the Griz have been absolutely embarrassed two years in a row on national television, and Tinkle's players have played like they have no business even being there. Tinkle gets out-coached badly once he's up against his peers from bigger conferences, and his players are intimidated by more big-time teams.

I have fond memories of Grizzly Basketball past, and you can have Tinkle and his one-dimensional teams that plod along offensively and get destroyed by any team that is outside of the insular congregation of weakling Big Sky teams. This culture of sticking with your own and hiring mediocre talent from within the program is a cancer to the whole athletic department, and Grizzly sports will never grow any more than it already has as long as that's the case.

While I do not share your opinion that Tinks should be replaced, I will agree that our team looked scared and over-matched from the opening tip in both the past two NCAA playoff games. That confidence factor has to be taught by the coach, and it looks like Tinkle has not been able to do so. And, I do not like his offensive style of slow-down basketball, especially with the talent at the guard positions which we enjoy now.

Funny thing about most egrlz trolls of late. After wreaking havoc in a bunch of threads, it seems like they’re eventually exposed in some way or another. You all know them from elsewhere: the major college athlete who never really was, the war vet who actually hid in Canada, the barroom brawler who actually slunk out the back door, the longtime fan who never attended UM (lots of those on the football threads).

And you can always tell by their posts... packed full of diatribes supposedly cloaked in the language of experience, logic & wisdom (“im right. I always am right. You are just too dumb to recognize it.”)

It never takes long to see they’re so full of it.

So, why do all you long-term true GRIZ fans -- who post here because you love the sport & love the Griz -- pay them any credence?

Truth is, Griz sports has always been and always will be small school, and until Montana is invited as the newest member of the Mountain West Conference in all sports... well, we’ll just have to be very happy to celebrate winning the Big Sky and getting an occasional CHANCE to play against schools like Syracuse & Wisconsin, schools decidedly NOT WAC/Mountain West caliber teams like Utah State & Nevada... the two schools Montana beat in the dance.

Truth also: Wayne Tinkle’s Griz are already in the record books as one of the two best-ever Montana basketball teams. Those of us who really watched both teams AND the other good Griz teams who didn’t quite measure up, know it. The rest of you need to quit pretending there was some “Golden Era” of Montana basketball where the teams were all capable of competing on a national scale. Never happened.

But this year’s team just capped a remarkable four-year run as the best in Montana history. And here’s the huge reality of it: if these coaches stick around (big if, I know) they’ll build Montana into a true mid-major contender. Here’s hoping Mr. Tinkle & his assistants DO just that.

Full disclosure: I was never a college-level athlete, I am a wimp & not a barroom brawler; but, I do have two degrees from UM and I am a Vietnam era vet.

Well done. :thumb:
I also never played div 1 ball. JC ball was as far as I got, and that was thanks to players getting kicked off the team, and them needing bodies just to practice. Can't complain, it got 1.5 years of school paid for.

Desert Storm vet here.

While I agree with MOST of your comment, I don't believe you have to ever had attended UM to be a longtime fan. I consider myself a longtime Griz fan and I always will be no matter what conference the Grizzlies are in or their win/loss record. I do agree with the rest of your statement though, and I know your comment wasn't directed towards me or people like me. I just take offense to people trying to say they are more of a Grizzly fan just because they attended UM.

Full disclosure: I never WENT to college, I have been in a couple barroom brawls, And I am still a US Navy Seabee participating in both OIF and OEF.

Let me see,, I recall a Coach Pat Kennedy not too long ago who was out of the so-called fold or good-old boy network and he had a real tough time putting together a team that was as consistent as Wayne Tinkle's teams have been.

In point of fact, it took two former players from the "fold" to make the Grizzlies even BSC championship caliber teams again!

The Grizzlies will never be on a consistent par with schools from the Big East, Big Ten or the PAC, but that really isn't the point. Personally, after viewing the teams that Syracuse has destroyed in this year's tournament so far, it appears to me that Syracuse took the Montana Grizzlies very seriously and prepared as hard for UM as it had for any team on it's schedule. You have to win the first one to even get a chance at the other's and Syracuse did exactly what it had to do against us. I don't fault Coach Tinkle for that and I do not believe it was his lack of a game plan, a stodgy offensive philosophy or an inability to motivate his players. Nor do I believe the UM players were scared.

After what happened this past weekend, Syracuse is simply that good!
