National Search for New Lady Griz Coach

If you want to make an audacious move here, one that is not only thinking "outside the box" but outside the Big Sky, a move that not only would bring national acclaim to the program but also likely yield the best candidate, here's my advice: Hire a black coach.

So your hypothesis is that a black coach would most likely be the best candidate?

I concede. Maybe not. But I hope we don't overlook that possibility.

Remember "back in the day" when it was thought blacks could not play quarterback in the NFL?

Ah, not any more!

Remember when there was only one prominent black coach in women's basketball, Vivian Stringer?

Not any more!

If we continue on the historical path of the Lady Griz, which is to recruit only white girls from the geographical area of Montana and the Pacific Northwest, the program is doomed to mediocrity because most of the best of that talent goes to Stanford, Gonzaga or UDub. (Hello Tinkle girls, Loree Payne, Karen Deden, Jill Barta.) Yes, we've been blessed that Montana has produced so many outstanding players over the years but it's time to widen our recruiting horizons as the first priority of this program. A black coach would certainly do that.

They definitely could. I hope they do. But I know a black coach would. And I know that's crucial for this program.

I don't disagree that changes are required, but the basis of your entire argument is nothing but poppycock. As per usual, everything comes down to a race issue for you.

Isn’t the issue mostly that they’re given about $1.50 for a recruiting budget? how are they gonna recruit SoCal and Seattle on their recruiting budget?

The only big Sky coach that would be surprise to me would be if Binford applied for the job.

Yea she has it going at MSU and her and her family are very rooted in the community. Take a big/exciting offer for her to move right now.

More familiar With Petrino, Sobolewski, and Carver. Of the 3, I would be in favor of Petrino and Sobolewski, due to head coaching experience.

Haven't investigated the others much. Hollsinger has head coaching experience at the NAIA level.

Jesche also has head coaching experience at NAIA level.

All the others were associate head coaches. Most with very impressive recruiting experience. One recruited Ionescu who was one of the best players in women's basketball last year.

Many of us remember Mandi Carver--a force when she played for Idaho State. She graduated as their all-time leader in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots and as a senior in 2001-02 led the nation in rebounding. She was also a three-time All-Academic selection at Idaho State.

She'd check these boxes:
--A Montana native, from Dillon; played for Beaverhead County High school;
--Would open our recruiting in talent-rich California, a must for this program;
--As a former post player herself should be a great coach for our bigs.

No, didn't pick the Lady Griz out of high school so not a member of the tight Lady Griz sorority. But she looks to me to be an excellent candidate.

Think her brother played football for Griz.

Another box to check, she is a woman.

My vote goes to Mark Campbell hands down. IMO, easily the top candidate. My distant second choice would be Holsinger. A pretty good argument could be made for the PAC 12 women being the toughest conference in the country right now. Would love to get their experience injected into our program.

If it’s not Mark Campbell then it’ll be because he withdrew his name. His resume is way too impressive to not offer him. If we screw that up then we got a serious problem.

Definitely seems to check all the boxes.

Everyone seems to discount Sobolewski. Multiple conference championships. 2021 BSC Championship coach with an admirable showing in the NCAA tourney. Knows the BSC as well as anyone. Recruits well. If he can recruit talented players to Pocatello, Idaho, what can he do in Missoula?

This is a very strong field on applicants. Petrino looks, to me, to be the weakest one. His strongest attribute may be his familiarity and acquaintance with most of the Search Committee members. Many who he sees on a daily basis in the Adams Center.

There are some seemingly good candidates, but I don't see the whole group as very strong, and Petrino certainly isn't the weakest.

And you would be correct, PR. Bryce Carver was a wide receiver for the Griz. He's now teaching at Hamilton High School and is also the school's head football coach.

Just by looking at the names listed here it would look as if Mark Campbell is the best of the bunch. But I'm not ruling anyone else out.
