So, why didn't we get Gamboa in here for a playoff game, which would have seemed ideal? He mentions in the Missoulian that San Clemente was playing for a championship this fall. Did their playoffs run so late he couldn't visit?
I could be wrong, but it might have been during the recruiting dead period.
It wasn't. The Griz had 15 or 20 kids visit during the UNI game

Cal playoffs go late. I believe San Clemente played until 12/10. UNI game was 12/9 so not really reasonable to expect an in-season visit.

Kid looks fast and good. He will def put on some weight through UM lifting program. Look forward to seeing him on ST and backing up our outstanding and PROVEN juniors for the next two years then getting his chance.

1 year RS, 1 yr as backup, 3 year starter. :thumb: :thumb:

FAIR ENOUGH. Could not have said it better! :thumb:

I just have to wonder what Im missing. He is fairly small and I wonder if hes not coming to play safety.

Not all that small; Matt Stainau was 6'1" & 220 lbs as a Senior and he did pretty well.

San Clemente has a QB, Travis Wilson, 6'6" 215 lbs., going to Utah.

He's 6', 205. How much did Durty McSurdy weigh coming out of HS? :?

McSurdy was 6'2" 230 lbs. his senior year in hs according to scout.com...215-225 lbs will be plenty big enough for Gamboa

6'0" 215 is not a small linebacker coming out of High School at all. Even if he is closer to 205 that is still not that small to be a big concern. Joyce was 200 when he came in. Biermann was probably around 205 when he came in too.

He's run a 10.71 100-meters (as a junior). That's blazing fast for a linebacker. That's faster than Jefferson Heidelberger ever ran in high school.

Considering that Chris Wilson broke all-class record in the 100 meters in Kalispell in 2009 with a 10.67, (and he was leading the pack by 5-6 meters when he went by me), I'd say 10.71 would have been a Montana record a couple of years ago. And he plays linebacker? Holy Warp 10 Batman!

As someone said earlier...you think we use him at safety and keep him at 210-215 range?

Griz WR recruit Taylor Walcott won his 100 meters prelim heat in the Oregon 5A track finals last May with a 10.83. And I was wowed by Walcott's speed in his films. Gamboa,a linebacker recruit, at 10.71 is amazing. I hope he has a great trip to Missoula tomorrow.

Pflugrad seems to believe we need more speed, which I agree with, so I would imagine he loves the idea of throwing a few more lbs. on Gamboa and keeping him at linebacker

San Clemente also has a OL that played in the naitonal US Army high school All Star game. San Clemente is an awesome high school football program.

:? :?: What exactly would the uofm coaches show this.kid order to persuade him to come to Griz Nation? Maybe they can show him a video of uni game and take him to the field and blast some crowd sounds to mimic game time atmosphere; that would definitely get his attention. Wouldn't it? :thumb:

THANK YOU ESPN :!: :!: :!:

If the Sam Houston State game was forgettable in some ways for the Montana Grizzlies, it still made a strong impression on one of their recruits.

Herbert Gamboa, a linebacker from San Clemente, Calif., committed to Montana's football program not long after the Grizzlies' 31-28 playoff loss to the top-ranked Bearkats.

"I saw that the University of Montana wins football games, and that's what I like to do," said Gamboa, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker. "I just played in the state championship."

Gamboa helped the Tritons to a 12-2 mark and a berth in the Pac-5 Southern Section title game in December, where they lost to Santa Margarita, 27-13.

The speedster - Gamboa ran the 100 meters in 10.71 seconds last spring - finished the season with 112 tackles, including seven sacks. He also ran for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass for the Tritons.

Gamboa committed before actually visiting the UM campus - he's to arrive in Missoula Friday. But he saw plenty of the Griz on ESPN, which televised the Sam Houston game as well as UM's quarterfinal game with Northern Iowa.

Gamboa also has visits scheduled for Eastern Washington and Sacramento State.

"My mom wants me to take as many visits as possible," he said. "But I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a Griz."

Didn't NFL and former Griz CB and return specialist Tuff Harris from Colstrip run a 10.7 in high school?

From http://www.gogriz.com/sports/c-otrack/spec-rel/041902aaa.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The University of Montana men's track and field team has signed two sprinters, Chester "Tuff" Harris of Colstrip, Mont., and Aidin (Uh-deen) Milani of Toronto, Canada, for next season, head coach Tom Raunig announced today.

Harris, a sprinter and jumper at Colstrip High School, is a four-time Montana state champion. At last year's Class A state meet, Harris won three events and was second in a fourth. He won the 100 meters in a time of 10.77, which set a Montana all-class state record. He also won the long jump with a leap of 22-feet, 7-inches, and ran a leg on the winning 4 X 100 relay team. Harris placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.29.

So Gamboa can certainly pick'em up and put'em down.

Yes. Tuff's fastest official time is 10.68 ran at Eastern A Divisionals in 2001 and that is still the Eastern A record. It was actually a wind aided 10.5X that was calculated out to 10.68. He set the state record that year with a 10.77.
