mcginnis

speaking of out of position with our safety.....the touch down of Oregon on the two yard line with Calhoun....How do you not see player out there all alone.....blown assignment does not quite do that one justice.....Mcginnis is a 4.0 student...for that reason alone he deserves a start imo .....

I think if the coaches thought he deserved to start, he would probably be starting.

His keys appear to have him shading right. The corner got blocked & the back was out quick. I’d agree it wasn’t the angle your coach would want, and Bobby publicly criticized him for, but nothing short of an amazing recovery & run down of a Pac12 kid who should be incredibly embarrassed about being caught from behind like that.

Where did Bobby criticize McGinnis?

Post game. Said something about that last run and our non starters not being in the right positions.

I don't think Bobby was criticizing McGinnis ("the freshman who didn't do his assignment"). I believe it was Mamula who didn't do the correct thing on the play.

McGinnis isn’t a frosh, is he?

Which play was Bobby commenting on?

No he is not. He was commenting on the play where McGinnis made the TD saving tackle. He was referring to other players making a mistake which was what made it necessary for McGinnis to make the play if I'm correct.

Missoula223 is correct in my opinion. Bobby specifically referred to a Freshman mistake and I think he was referring to Walker who didn't stay home. McGinnis effort covered up the CB's mistake. Unfortunately it was 62 yards downfield.

By the way, I think Walker will become an outstanding corner in his career here and eventually become an All-Conference corner.

Mamula's assignment here is to set the edge.

That play by Dante at 1:12 is unreal. Recognizes early, initially takes a bad angle, but is able to recover and trip up the runner or that guy is GONE.

I think it was a shot at several players on that play, including McGinnis

Part of the reason McGinnis had to run him down was the bad angle he took initially.

I looked @ the play initially from ground level. Thanks for posting. Mamula did get hooked, Walker got blocked (I’d say he was as home as he should/could be given an RPO) & 14 ran around the Walker block & up the sideline. McGinnis is a soph so I missed on the criticism & while the effort was great, the initial angle was awful, and it was his foot speed that saved him & the TD. He might have shaved a yard or two off the gain if he had compensated earlier.

Dude everyone in football is taught to trust their teammate and do their job. Bobby referred to freshman not doing their job. Whether it be Mamula or Walker, McGinnis thought someone would turn the ball back into him, which he should because again it looks like hes the post player and regardless there's only 1 coverage where a safety should/could be the force player, and this clearly isn't it. He took the angle that he did because he assumed someone would turn it back into him.

I don't know why you're so dead set on his angle being bad, but it wasn't and if you think it is you don't understand football schematically.

I agree. I admit that my only view is this video,
and I am drinking wine and on plane to Tokyo,
so don’t have great view.

McGinnis shouldn’t assume his teammates should not make good plays. He was lined up short. He came across. He didn’t miss anything.

His angle looked good to me. His recovery was almost unbelievable. Had I been able to do that, I would still be playing in the NFL.

You are right. It would have been awful for him to play it a little flatter and not so sharp, and hold it to a 10 yd gain instead of a 60+ yd gain. So much for schematics....

wth is your problem?..kids got closing speed to chase down a top level RB..and lots of people
took notice!..as a coach you can always teach angles but you cant always teach speed!

Box, he was playing the 3d safety position as a linebacker. Jeez, look where he is lined up at start of play. You, of all people, would seem to know. He is not a safety in this line up.

He did not take a bad angle.

His angle was fine. He was not safety on the play.

Nothing, you wanted to know when he would break into the lineup, and my entire point was what you stated and I bolded, as the reason he wasn't yet. If it was all about speed, we could just line-up 11 track guys. I noticed the speed, but I also noticed that his bad angle was why it was on display chasing the RB down the field. Sensitive much?
