McDowell to the Portal

And the longer he waits, the more he's gonna be behind the 8-ball by not being there for spring ball.

I hope we one day find out who was in his ear. I know his exit meeting obviously went badly, but man, this feels like he had the wrong people around him giving him advice. Or maybe just the pride goes before the fall. But man, still bothered by this one. Not because he is irreplaceable as a football player, but he may be as a leader and fire starter. I know we will be fine next year, but I'm gonna miss Big Clif.

Me too.

Thank you Cliff for all you did for Griz Nation. Wish you were still with us. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

Not Jordy, not Jensen, not Gustafson, not sneed, Humphrey or Johnson. McDowell did that .

OK, which QB quit the team by entering the portal? Answer is a quote from our learned football guru, AZGrizFan: "Not Jordy, not Jensen, not Gustafson, not Sneed, Humphrey or Johnson. McDowell did that."
And, he ain't a kid, he's a 23 year old adult. 8-)

'The longer he waits.....' True. But he can't accept something that hasn't been offered, yet.

I don't know, I didn't think the part of the brain focused on logical decision making was fully developed in males at 23. Mine sure wasn't.

His collegiate history is a list of bad decisions. Looking for his FIFTH college??? His choice of a major requires attention to details. He should have known what admission to graduate school required. This seems to have escaped him. Indecisiveness on the field has led to sacks, interceptions, and fumbles(and injuries???).. I hope he has gotten rid of his unofficial 'advisors' and sees what a predicament he has made for himself.

I don't think this decision came down to anything related to psych grad school, buddy. I know you and the other guy talked about it, but I don't think admission to grad school factored in at all.

Jensen transferred out and Sneed, Humphrey, and Johnson all transferred in, players change teams all the time. Your quote "quit on the team" is stupid but at least now it is stupid and accurate.

Jesus fudge. What is the DEAL with people piling on this kid, who literally 10 days ago let us to the National Title game for the first time in 14 years. Not Jordy, not Jensen, not Gustafson, not sneed, Humphrey or Johnson. McDowell did that . Y’all are fudge pathetic. Acting like no other QB threw any INT’s, ever got sacked, ever fumbled, ever got tackled, ever threw an incompletion, ever had a moment of indecision….

Why can’t y’all just thank him for his service to the Griz and wish him well?
+1

If you haven't listened to Colter's radio broadcast from last Friday you need to give it a listen. Rajiem Seabrook goes off on Clifton McDowell. Really interesting

Interesting? Mmm maybe. Imo Seabrook is way off, and rambles on like someone who likes to hear his own voice.

Yeah. THAT is what I was talking about.

Stop being obtuse and support the only QB who has EVER gotten us to Frisco.

The reality is that he got a late start, was relegated to a backup role, and had to watch #1 flounder, even when the wheels came off in Flagstaff. When he got his chance, he made the most of it, showing what a mobile running QB can do with/for this offense. That got him attention. He proved himself, and improved through the season. The playoffs were a sight to behold. He, with the help of his teammates, attained the pre-season impossible, Frisco.

No one can deny his contribution, but why the hell do you duck into the portal with one season left to go? Someone whispering NFL/CFL in his ear? His teammates buckled down for some 'unfinished business.' He left. His reasons are his own. We are left with rumors and speculation. He could have cemented his legacy. Now, it's a stain on his resume. Too bad. I wish him the best, unless it runs counter to the Griz.

Leading your team to the national title game is a stain on your resume? :P

View of college coach who watched game, after learning McDowell went to Portal and possible reason he left: “Crazy, Crazy. He didn’t look like he wanted to be in the game Sunday from about 1/2way through the 3rd Qtr till end of game. Kind of sad, where we are in College football. Lot more fun to coach Kids that WANT to compete!”

I've heard that said a number of times. I guess I"m gonna have to watch the replay, because I certainly couldn't see that from my seat.

Not doubting you, but is this a quoteable or a private source? I'd like to see it if possible. Always better to see the statement in it's entirety.

Hardly. He deserves all due credit for that. It would only become a stain if the '24 Griz win the NC WITHOUT HIM. Championships are chiselled in granite. Second place becomes a footnote.

Being the QB and "leading" the team to the champ game is a huge positive and accomplishment. Obviously, he wasn't the only player to lead the team to the championship game. Gubner, Bergen, Hill, the other backers, the running backs, the corners, the o-line, the receivers, etc. The team probably doesn't get there without McDowell, but they don't get there without some of those other guys either.

Agreed 100%. Gubner, Bergen and Gradney are the 3 that immediately come to mind.

The thing is, we seen how the Griz looked without McDowell. It wasn't pretty. Got absolutely manhandled by NAU, struggled with a D2 team, and looked ugly against Butler. McDowell stepped in and the team immediately looked 100x more improved and gained an identity. He stepped in with fire and the other guys followed and stepped up with fire. He sparked a much needed flame into the Griz.
