Live tweets from the 10am presser

Glad to hear that the Griz are getting some good news. I hope the rest of the issues going on turn out to be nothing, and hopefully we will meet in the playoffs (preferably in Fargo).

This job is not only the best job in FCS but maybe the easiest in handling these young men in the nation.

I can promise a few things

- we'll strive to win every game

- recruit high charachter

- will not chase guys that won't do the right thing

What does that mean??? Kemp??? JJ???

Back from the press conference. These are my takeaways from it;

1. Royce had some very nice things to say about Mick. A lot of comments about his charachter and the leadership he provides. Royce talked about he was incredibly impressed with Mick's leadership since taking over as interim.

2. Jean Gee had a very long list of athletics success. Said that "finding the best person for the job was literally 2 doors down the hall."

3. In comparing "styles" of addressing the media Delaney was a little closer to the way Hauck was than Pflu was. Bobby was almost cold but he'd express confidence and practically a rigid message. Pflu was more conversational, joking, and casual. Mick today was somewhere in the middle but leaned to being a bit more rigid like Hauck was. He had a solid message, not a lot of flare, and made sure he repeated the main points of his goals which were character, academics, and winning football games.

4. Of the media people there I noticed a definate split between those that knew what the conference was about and those that didn't. There were a few that I think were expecting something totally different and got up and left right as the public portion ended, they obviously were expecting something other than this.

No Gwen/Charles.

It means they won't recruit or bring in kids with character issues, he said it about 5 times. He was continually talking about making sure the young men that play on the team will focus on being good students, good players, and good citizens.

He is exactly what we need right now. An old style coach from Butte that doesn't take any lip and leaves no doubt about who is in charge.

You know, back in 86 the U hired a coach that some thought was beyond his prime. But he came in met with the players and made changes right away such as making new players live in the dorms, all Freshman or any player below a 2.5 GPA had to attend evening study sessions, etc. We had some pretty positive change from where the program was thanks to Don Read and his staff. Now he was facing some of the issues we have now, but there were issues that at the time seemed just as big.

Point being, I like this move and it gives the program something to hold on to if things get worse in the future and something to build on. I never have any regrets about going to the U, but Mike VanDeist was my recruiter and I just about changed my mind when I met Larry D! I think by giving Mick a contract, it makes going to Missoula a lot easier for any player to decide to attend.

I can only hope that the other things finish up, because guessing is the the worst. I would rather find out what needs to be done and get started then to sit in limbo at this point. Rather then fighting about who is to blame, we need to rally as fans of this University and move forward.

University of Miami?

I thought the same thing lol. There's only one The U, and it's Miami.

Brint,

Thanks for the updates. Just curious though. Were there any questions? I do believe the NCAA was supposed to provide an update in July and we have only a couple more days left in the month. I assume we should hear something on that front soon....

Again, I'm glad we have Coach D. One additional step in the right direction in this VERY LONG off season.

Thanks

Go Griz!

I've heard a number of people casually refer to UM as The U. Not a big deal, but way to jump at the opportunity to be a dick.

Back to the point-at-hand, I'm excited for Mick and the upcoming season. Backs to the wall!

Go Griz!

The questions were 1-on-1 afterwards so you'll have to wait until the Missoulian/KPAX/KECI ones come out.

As I over-heard two reporters talking behind me;

Reporter 1: "So do you think they'll have word on any of the investigations?"

Reporter 2: "Do you think they'd hold a press conference with their Go Griz banner in the stadium to tell us bad news?"

lol.

As for the other updates, no clue.

The interim tag has been dropped.

The University of Montana and football coach Mick Delaney have agreed to a two-year contract, the school’s athletic department announced at a press conference this morning inside the Canyon Club at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

"He's done an excellent job providing leadership during these past few months," UM president Royce Engstrom said in making the announcement. "He is a strong leader who will uphold the grand tradition of Grizzly football."

Delaney, 70, took over the Griz football program in March, when UM fired then-head coach Robin Pflugrad and athletic director Jim O’Day.

At Thursday's announcement, Delaney said he is committed to rebuilding and restoring the football program's reputation.

"We will recruit kids of high character, No. 1, good academics, no. 2 ... and no. 3, they have to be able to play a little bit, too," he said. "We do not have the time and resources to chase around a young man who will not do the right thing."

Delaney, who had retired from coaching on Feb. 9, was initially asked by Engstrom to take the job on a one-year interim basis.

Engstrom didn’t give any reasons for the firings in the spring, saying only that change was needed.

When Delaney accepted the interim position, his first head coaching gig since a two-year stint (1991-92) at alma mater UM-Western, back in March, he did so with the understanding that he might only be around for the one season. That didn’t faze the Butte native.

“It’s about the kids, it’s not about me,” Delaney told the Missoulian at the time. “They’re a tremendous bunch of really, really good players that I've been close to since the day they walked in here. I'll do everything I can to continue the tremendous success that they've had.”

The Griz open fall drills on Aug.

Predictable. Anybody really surprised? No disrespect to Mick, but UM always follows the path of least resistance when it comes to athletic hires...on the other hand, would anybody outside of the nepotic Griz family really want to risk their career in a very chaotic situation? ....Will we be any less surprised with the AD pick?... In the meantime good luck, old fella!

spoken like the true dick you are

Have 4 commitments already in recruiting, expects more after this presser.

A solid guarantee that coach Delaney will be here and that this program will be on safe ground.

Follow the mission statement, high character, good grades, and good enough to beat the bobcats.

I thought we knew of only 3 verbals? Who's the fourth?

I am so sorry to have offended somebody by using a reference that I have heard and used for over 35 years. From the time I was a kid, people that I know who attended the University of Montana would often refer to others that attended the University of Montana with the reference of "the U" with full knowledge it was the University of Montana. In fact, to many of my alum friends and family I still talk about the University of Montana by saying "the U". As this is a message board dedicated to athletics at the U, I was very comfortable that others who are supporters or alumni of the U, wouldn't have a problem with the use. But in the future for those that are unable to ascertain that the use of the U on a board about athletics at the University of Montana, will just have to suffer through it because it is and will always be "the U" to me.

But again, I think Mick will do a great job at the U ( University of Montana, not Miami) , and will bring much needed stability.

B.A. in 1976, M.ED in 81, always refered to University of Montana as the "U".

In the context of recruiting in your later post and with all the words it makes sense. In your first post it seemed out of place.
