I thought the same thing lol. There's only one The U, and it's Miami.
I've heard a number of people casually refer to UM as The U. Not a big deal, but way to jump at the opportunity to be a dick.

Back to the point-at-hand, I'm excited for Mick and the upcoming season. Backs to the wall!

I am so sorry to have offended somebody by using a reference that I have heard and used for over 35 years. From the time I was a kid, people that I know who attended the University of Montana would often refer to others that attended the University of Montana with the reference of "the U" with full knowledge it was the University of Montana. In fact, to many of my alum friends and family I still talk about the University of Montana by saying "the U". As this is a message board dedicated to athletics at the U, I was very comfortable that others who are supporters or alumni of the U, wouldn't have a problem with the use. But in the future for those that are unable to ascertain that the use of the U on a board about athletics at the University of Montana, will just have to suffer through it because it is and will always be "the U" to me.

But again, I think Mick will do a great job at the U ( University of Montana, not Miami) , and will bring much needed stability.

B.A. in 1976, M.ED in 81, always refered to University of Montana as the "U".

Yep! Who around here would think Miami when referring to the U?

Born and raised here, and got a couple of degrees in 2005. I have always called it the "U". Obviously it is a local/alma mater thing, but oddly enough, we are on a message board dedicated to Montana..

I've been here 60 years, and always heard it locally as "the U," and always referred to it myself as "the U". When I am talking to someone that is "not from these parts," it's usually "UM".

When I am leaving the house, and anyone asks, "I'm going over the U," as it would sound odd to say "I am going over to UM," as though I might be walking over to "some other" university within walking distance.

Its great that Delaney has committed to a two-year contract, but what about the assistant coaches. I'm sure that they will be here this year, what about the future? Most were part of Pflugrad's staff, so if he gets another job in 2013, how many will follow him? If he goes to a lower level college that won't be a problem, but??

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Montana announced Thursday that it has removed the interim tag from football coach Mick Delaney's title and given him a two-year deal to lead an embattled program caught up in an investigation of how the university as a whole handled allegations of sexual assault.

Delaney was chosen as the interim head coach for the 2012 season after coach Robin Pflugrad was relieved of his duties in March and told his contract wouldn't be renewed. Interim athletic director Jean Gee said Delaney's new contract expires in January 2014.

Gee said Delaney brings expertise, mentorship, leadership and integrity to the job.

Coach D talked about the staff and what a great group they are. He said he'll work to keep them all together but pointed out that if the assistant coach has a better option at another school that's good for them. He made mention of coach Breske getting that very opportunity.

To conclude the statement he said that, "If other schools aren't trying to hire your coaches away then you don't have good coaches."

Also Delaney showed that he's presumably on fairly good terms with Royce Engstrom referring to him as "Dr. E"

thanks brint,,,wonderful job of covering the event......imo a very good choice as well........stability is everything right now as the football program moves forward....we must be able to recruit, and this helps a bunch....

Thanks Brint and thanks Twitter for crapping out just before the event.
hmm - Griz have a press conference to announce good news, Florio is on Twitter, and Twitter mysteriously stops working right before the press conference. Coincidence or conspiracy? :o

On national level, Miami is the "U." If you want to call Montana that, no big deal.

Those of us that use the reference are forever in your debt for granting your permission to refer to our University as the U. NONE of us knew that Miami was known as the U at the national level and will refrain from using it outside for those that may become confused by the term. Thank you for pointing this out and saving me the embrassment of being in an airport or some other part of the country and using the term and having to explain that my wife and I were not talking of Miami, but just the University of Montana. I'm so happy you saved me, because I really did believe that as I was posting on a UNIVERSITY of MONTANA sight that people wouldn't become confused. My mistake.

That explains a lot, it was a college when my sis was doing her doctorate there. They had most everybody convinced that the overwhelming smell of cow manure was the smell of money. I was convinced thats why they served beer in the student union bldg. Actually I was thinking more of Michigan. Bubba Smith had trouble saying "U" it alwzys came out more like "whu"
