LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR TEAM MAKEUP

When I read the title I thought the Griz had picked up a new sponsor (to go along with the JJ Kiss Cam and the Dodge Red Zone). I was really hoping it was Max Factor and not Cover Girl...

I think this is a flat-out loaded squad. Some players need to mature of course. But they will be good in 2015, and LOOKOUT going forward in the years to come with stringing multiple recruiting classes together like the Griz did this recruiting class.

QB - Can't wait for this battle in the spring and fall :!: There are a few stars at this position. Gut (s)it's between Simis, Chalich, and Pflug...in no patricular order. I like Gustafson though too.
WR - Potentially the best group of WRs in school history. We got all the different body styles and skills in this group.
RB - Love getting Joey Counts back. Look forward to seeing Favors and Calhoun.
TE - Horner and Tilleman were great pass catchers in HS, maybe they play inside slot like Bingham? Does Mike Ralston move to DE? He starred at that position at Sheldon HS.
FB/HBACK - Does Jamal Wilson move to Nose Guard? What about the two RS-FR, Chadderdon and Kack? Possibly LB or DE?
OL - We should be two deep across the front, with 12 players returning, older and stronger. 1 SR and 7 JRs (a lot of upperclassmen) Redshirting the brand new 4 high schoolers looks likely.
K and P - Looks strong with upperclassmen, then in 2016 we probably turn to Danny Peoples and/or newcomer(s).

INTERIOR D-LINE - Not the strongest position on the team, at first look. I love getting Caleb Kidder back from injury! Probably some suprises in store...
DE - Griz aren't as stong here either (losing Wags) in 2015. But future is tremendous (with the RS-FR, Nick Mertes and Evan Miksich) with Jesse Sims and Andrew Harris.
LB - Starters will be even better than they were last year (exp.), and the underclassmen and signees are out of this world. This is the strongest postion, besides reciever. QB too.
CB - Harris and Sanders will start, Nelson, McKinley and Parker be see lots of action on D and special teams. I feel good about these athletes.
S - This is concern on the team. Whitted is good, Johnson played well at times. But then the most talent is in young RS-FR Evan Epperly and RS-FR Manu Rasmussan, and of course both true freshman Josh Sandry and Jerrin Willilams.

Kidder and Peevey are both athletic DT's. I am not too worried about those 2. They do need to stay healthy though. I expect a lot of big plays from these 2 at DT.

Absolutely, I totally agree. My concern is what's behind them.

You don't have Markell Sanders on that list. The CB transfer from WSU.

Coach Stitt did reference Markell Sander at the recruiting function in Kalispell. Stitt said Sanders will be expected to be a major contributor right away. Sanders was the only new player he mentioned with any kind of expectation this season.
Stitt also mentioned Ena might be ready and needed and he stated Chalich is the only QB with any kind of experience and they may have to lean on him a lot, at least in the beginning.

After QB play.....Dline (especially d-tackle), Corner, and Safety depth - whether injuries occur or not - is the biggest issue the Griz have heading into 2015.....

After spring ball - it will be interesting to see if FBS transfers or JC kids come in within those areas if coaches feel they need immediate help there as the younger guys aren't developed enough yet.

Holmes and Crittenden will do just fine holding the edges and pressing the QB this season. I think we're in good shape at DE. If Stitt can pull this team together, it could be a darn good season. Can't wait to get this started!

GO GRIZ!

Couple of things. 1. Schmaing is definitely back. Guff referenced it at the presser. 2. Whitted is a beast at safety when healthy. He's a thumper. 3. I don;t think the Griz have enough wide receivers. lol

I agree about Whitted being a thumper. I remember his HS recruiting tape, and him planting opponents into a dusty field (in Los Angeles).

Grey-Shirting in 2010, and then enrolling full-time and red-shirting in 2011 did him wonders. He'll be returning as the starter at Strong Safety, 6 years after playing his SR high school season (fall of 2009).

I believe we will need Ena and Chalich right away.

The good thing about Chalich is this will be his 4th season of college football, and he has played in about a dozen FBS games already. He's the clear front-runner for NDSU. :twocents:

My guess is that there will be 2 or 3 drop-downs after spring football that will fill the gaps that the coaches see...

As my buddy and I were talking this morning, he had an interesting suggestion. Wanted to see what your thoughts were.
So all these QB's go through spring camp like we expect them to. As most expect the system and style seems to favor Sims, Chalich, Pflug and (Prater?).
My friend recalls Weyer being a pretty decent track athlete especially he recalled him a good high jumper. Could this suggest that Weyer get thrown into the rotation of WR's in order to see playing time? He seemed to recall Weyer also having some decent running ability as a QB which was why the thought of a WR.

Stitt has made it pretty clear that his ideal QB trait isn't speed or arm strength or running ability, but the ability to quickly read the defense and process 25-30 different options, call the play and effectively run the offense.

True, I heard that directly from Stitt at the recruiting banquet in Kalispell. He was pretty insistent on it too. :thumb:

Now, if there happens to be a guy who can do all those things AND has a cannon for an arm, can run through brick walls and has 4.5 speed well then, so be it.

And stays out of trouble off the field. :thumb:

So are both of you suggesting multiple QB's in this system? Not just one??

It would not surprise me. Stitt says his offense will vary from game to game. His offense is designed to take advantage of our opponent's defensive weaknesses. He gave an example of running the same play in one game over 40 times being his team was having success with that play. I guess the "run it until they stop it" philosophy may occur with Stitt as HC. :thumb:
