It's no different than it is at the Republican convention, when dissenters get shouted down with "USA! USA!" People are guilty of this behavior on both the left and the right.
Here's my takeaway:
1. Krakauer's event was just a marketing tool to sell more books.
2. The newspaper took full advantage as a way to sell more newspapers and get more clicks on their website.
3. The commentary on this site brings even more attention to the issue, which perpetuates 1 and 2 above.
Do you think the people who shouted down Mr. Dove are bringing people who share Mr. Dove's viewpoints over to their side?
How about the people on this site who call the author "Krak-whore?" Are they swaying the shouters to their side?
Of course not. People don't want to hear dissenting viewpoints. They only want to hear confirmation of the things they already believe.
So let me add a #4 to my list: Missoula is looking stupider by the minute.
