Kaimin Cutting Back for Financial Reasons

I would think if a business had a 25% decline in sales, they would be looking at the sales department for answers.......... The small decline in readership in no way explains the poor performance of their ad sales.

What decline in readership? I didn't notice that in the article.

Did everyone note who wrote this Kaimin article? I found that to be odd.

I would hope that printing 2500 copies instead of 4000 would represent a decline in readership, but you are right the article did not say how many of 12000 or so students paying for the paper were actually reading it not to mention how many fewer community members were reading when the off campus distribution was stopped.

Looked to me that the fewer print copies was done to save money. Nothing in the article indicated that it was due to lower viewership. Note that many people read the Kaimin online. You can't assume lower viewership from the information presented. Heck, overall viewership could be up due to how people are viewing the Kaimin.

Does Florio have any ties to the Kaimin in her position now? Regardless, could her being on payroll in a limited capacity in the Journalism department be somewhat of a negative to some? After her efforts to destroy the football program and tabloid journalism, I have no clue why she is on payroll? To me, her being part of the Journalism Dept is negative.

There are plenty of grad students looking for a thesis topic for their MBA or MPA degrees. Perhaps a word with the respective department chairmen and one of the students could complete their degree requirements publish their findings for all to read by the end of this year.

Dude, where's my Kaimin?

Student newspaper makes changes to prevent budget collapse

Due to budgetary constraints, the Montana Kaimin has ceased its four-day-a-week publication to a once-weekly newspaper through the end of the school year, in an effort to stave off looming debt.

Thanks PR, I somehow overlooked that. I guess we now know some of the problem. For me, as long as Florio is part of the Kaimin, it will be hard for many to support the Kaimin more. Her hack/butcher job reporting for the Missoulian lost all credibility in my eyes. It is sad the powers to be did not weigh the impact to adding her to staff. I feel for the journalism reporters who are expected to learn through her. Sadder yet, weren't there better options than her to add to staff?

ASUM support declined from approximately $126,000 in 2012 to $107,000 this year, due to enrollment declines.

And the article about that is written by one of the main instigators of the enrollment declines and resulting budget problems at the Montana Kaimin?

Conflict of interest, anyone? Does anyone at the J-School even have a clue anymore?

And of course, she doesn't mention any of the reasons for the enrollment declines, and the resulting financial problems of the student newspaper?

And she's hired by the University she badly damaged and is getting faculty pay from the J-School to write about the direct and painful results of her insidious agenda which, among the general effects on the education mission as a whole, is also and ironically the significant damage to Journalism on the UM Campus, the loss of Campus news and sports coverage and the loss of valuable experience to student journalists?

It isn't just that Main Hall is breathtakingly clueless about everything it does, it is almost as though it intends to spit in everyone's eye.

Whats really sad is, how could Engstrom hire this woman after she shit on the university?

I suppose in their f'ed up minds it adds credibility to the "Rebuild the Culture" movement or whatever they're trying to spin.

I did see that she wrote that story.

I took j-school courses many years ago, and I've followed the paper for many years, and I don't recall ever seeing anyone on the faculty write a story for the paper.

Made me wonder if she's the new adviser for the paper.

How the hell can we have so damn many dumb "smart" people? I am looking straight at Royce Engstrom.

Why are we in a period of leaders leading with below average leadership ability? Starts with Obama and runs right through Royce and on down!

And we sit on our butts and allow this to occur?

Well, my investments have quadrupled, my home sold for 8 times what I paid for it last month, my kids are doing well, and my state is creating jobs faster than ever expected with salaries to match while the ports are back upped on both sides. So, I think President Obama has done a great deal right. As for UM, I am beginning to think it is in a race to the bottom and is in dire need of realignment. As for the JSchool, it is history in the making but will soon be history. Yet, at NAU, broadcasts on Big Sky TV and their local area are student run, operated, and maintained and it is quality. Blaming Obama is stupid...I look to the Supreme Court decisions and the least ineffective Congress in a century to point out the failures of this government including the new senator from Montana.
