Since Grizbacker is saying that it is between U of M and Stanford for Joslyn does anyone know what the requirements are for being accepted to Stanford? The only reason I ask is there was an article in the Billings Gazette recently about one of the class valedictorian from Billings West.

This kid had a 4.0 GPA in high school and was one of 16 kids in the nation to have a "perfect" ACT score. Perfect as in 36 in all catogories. He also had a bunch of extra curr. activities and community acitivites and he was not accepted to Stanford? He is going to U of M instead.

If a perfect ACT score is not good enough to get in I wonder what is?

An incredible post game combined with the ability to shoot from beyond the arc.

No, I don't know. Sucks for that kid though. Must've blown it on the essay.

I wish Jos the best, but the paralells back to the late 80's is striking...

We defeat Stanford at home that year, against Vandeveer led Cardinal and the UofM womens story is a bit different. Maybe not entirely, but the story would be different.

Twenty years later, to gain the services of maybe the best womens player to come out of Montana since Cate, our arch nemisis is once again Stanford. Can't seem to swat away the history on this one.

Again a battle that if we win, our womens program takes a different arc. Dang stanford...seriously like a burr in the saddle of everything UofM...when it comes to womens basketball.

Stanford, tough school to pass up. If that is really the case. Could be 100 other schools for Jos. Who knows...

I remember taking some college prep courses (far too long ago) and hearing that there's some sort of bias against the ACT by a lot of coastal schools. the SAT is more important to schools on the west coast, and the ACT is more prevalent at schools in the midwest, and parts of the east.

I don't know if it's still like that, but that could be part of the reason that the BW kid with the perfect ACT still didn't get into stanford.

back to the thread topic... I don't think Jos has any firm idea of what she wants to do. If she did, I'd be willing to bet that hanging around with the best U18 players in the country (those that are going to tennessee, maryland, rutgers, and yes, stanford) is doing quite a bit to un-firm any college thoughts she was having as a HS junior. Once they figure out how good she is, and how much more potential is there, i think her USA teammates will all be pulling her in different directions. and as good as the honor is for Jos, her playing USA ball is about the worst thing that could have happened for UM's chances at landing her.

i've gotta laugh at all the negativity by montana fans surrounding the recruitment of joslyn tinkle. just for a moment, put yourself in the shoes of tara vandeveer, and look what she's up against:
1.) a player drenched in the tradition of the university of montana, where her parents both played (her mother for the current coach), and where her father is still the head basketball coach;
2.) a hall-of fame coach in robin selvig, who over 30 years has built one of the best programs in the country;
3.) a tutor/ assistant coach in shannon cate schweyen who is the best player in the history of montana basketball, and with very few exceptions the equal of any player ever produced at stanford;
4.) an annual attendance that is among the best in the country, ranking just a tad fewer than the attendance at stanford;
5.) a basketball facility (dahlberg arena) that is at least the equal of maples pavilion, which was originally built in 1969, and is now one of the smallest arenas in the pac 10;
6.) the friends joslyn has developed over the years playing a.a.u. ball, especially ali hurley, now a freshman at montana;
7. ) the opportunity for her friends and family to see her play on a regular basis;
8.) the absolute slam-dunk guarantee that at montana she will be in the ncaa tournament every year for four years;
9.) finally, the chance joslyn would have to make a major major impact on a school and on a program, versus being yet another good player at a school that has recruited dozens and dozens of high school all-americans.

sure, tara has huge advantages too--the stanford reputation of academic excellence, combined with the promise joslyn can compete against the best players in the country. but even here i feel montana can be competitive, especially since i've done at least as well in life on a fine montana education as my stanfoo-educated brother (sorry, bro), the while it appears selvig, who has always played a tougher schedule than the men, is already upping the ante by scheduling the the marylands of the world.

i do believe it will come down to montana and stanford, and i'm not naive about the advantages tara has in this battle. but it's long been my theory that in any competitive situation, too many fret about the advantages of their competitor while totally forgetting their own unique capabilities, and that's just what i'm seeing played out by montanans in this long long record thread.

City,

That was, by far, one of your best posts ever. Bottom line, Joslyn will play for Stanford or Montana. I posted it weeks ago. Nothing has changed. I hope she gets homesick while still home.

thanks for the well-thought out, optimistic essay City. With our maroon and silver hearts being broken so many times by the top Montana athletics, it would be nice to see what Selvig could do with the best for once instead of having to compete against Montana's best such as Loree Payne(sic) and Karen Deeden. The former's reason for going purple was she was going to medical school or teaching. And what she end up doing being an assistant coach.

One other thought would about why should be a Lady Griz is for family to watch her play and for her to watch siblings play and watch her father teams.

In case anyone is interested the Missoulian has few articles regarding her experience in South America. They are doing well and undefeated thus far. Here is my favorite part of her journal.

Argentina is a wonderful place but there really is no place like home. Go USA!! (Lets hope she remembers that when it comes to who she commits to) :thumb:

Congrats Jos on this honor.

Congrats Jos on this honor.

I got out of it that she meant Missoula and the USA. Not just specifically Missoula.

However, I have from the beginning (since she defeated my beloved Lady Bulldogs for State) said that Tinkle should be a Lady Griz. She is a Montanan thru and thru, she is one of us. It just would't seem right having her GONE for 4 or 5 years when she could be making so many people, especially herself, so happy in Montana. Her dad is doing a tremendous job and things are really looking up for the mens team, I just would think that she would want to be a part of the huge success that the Lady Griz and Griz are going to have...

Whatever she chooses, I wish her the best. :egriz:

PS. She is the real deal. Her intensity is unreal. A chip off the ol block...

The idea that she might attend Stanford is incorrect. She will not be attending Stanford. That is pretty much a fact.

She is receiving lots of heat from the Missoula townfolks.

She is keeping an open mind and playing her cards close to her chest...even with her family.

I hope she goes where it feels best for her and she gets a great opportunity to follow her dreams, whatever they might be.

I would love her to stay here, but it is her life. She is a great kid.

SHE NEEDS MISSOULA TO SUPPORT HER NO MATTER WHERE SHE GOES TO COLLEGE.

Wherever, Missoula and the State will always support her. It is fun to say "she is one of ours'" More fun of course, if she becomes a Lady Griz.

Are you guys telling me that if this girl goes to Stanford that UM fans will turn on her a la Ole Miss fans when Peyton Manning spurned them for Rocky Top? I kinda find that hard to believe. The UM fans I met at the Sac game last year had MUCH more class than that.

Just have this gut feeling after reading Miss Tinkle's articles in the Missoulian this past week that her heart is in Montana and always has and will be. I think she will become a Lady Griz as Shannon Cate did and will be compared to Shannon in years to come!!! Holy Cow what an honor!!! What an honor it must be to get all these offers. In the end the grass in no greener on the other side!!! And to be able to play for one of the best coaches in Women's basketball history has got to weigh into her decision!!! Can't wait to here of the day she decides to become a Lady Griz!!!!

Here is here journal from Sunday. After reading that and all the other things how can she not chose the Lady GRIZ? Or is she slowly prepping us for us understanding if she does not choose to be a Lady GRIZ?

JOSLYN TINKLE: A golden experience representing Montana
By JOSLYN TINKLE for the Missoulian

Editor's note: Joslyn Tinkle, a senior-to-be at Missoula Big Sky, is in Argentina playing with the USA Basketball Women's U18 national team. While on the road, Tinkle will be writing a tour journal for the Missoulian. This is her entry for Sunday, July 27, 2008.

Que tal, Montana?

It has been a great night here in Buenos Aires. The U18 USA team is bringing home the gold.

We had a very exciting game Sunday against Argentina and won big, 81-37. The gym was filled with screaming, passionate Argentina fans, all hoping for an upset. Our team was a little rattled at first from all the noise but we set that aside and focused on playing our game and having fun.

Once the final horn sounded, we were very happy about all we had accomplished over the past few days. We could all agree that we had never been through something so difficult and exhausting, but when standing on the podium singing along to the National Anthem, it made all of our hard work worth it.

I would like to thank all of my USA basketball coaches, staff, and teammates for giving me such an amazing experience. I will treasure all the laughs, sprints, dance moves, 7 a.m. practices and lessons learned about a different culture, but most of all, having the gold medal placed around my neck.

I also want to thank the Missoulian for letting me share my trip with all of you. I told my parents how honored I am for being chosen to play for such an elite team and representing my country, but most importantly, how proud I am of representing the state of Montana!

What I heard last weekend w/ someone real tight w/ the program (Lady Griz hoops).

1 & 2) The pluses on our (Griz fans) side: She's a "homebody", so to speak. And her parents played here.

3) And one thing that will probably determine her decision: How well the mens team does/fathers employment.

What a talented, intelligent and humble young lady. There is no doubt why schools and programs like Stanford are recruiting her.

If that's what she's basing her decision on, I'm not holding out much hope that she'll be a Lady Griz. Would the Griz admin re-sign Wayne just to get her to sign with the Lady Griz?

YES, not often an all american is in our backyard. Besides Tinkle runs a clean program, recruits well, is learning on the job. I feel the GRIZ will have very good year this year, and Tinkle deserves the opportunity to coach a team with the majority being his own recruits. Hasquet was not his recruit but is tight with Tinkle. As for the other SR, Sharp, he also gets along well and respects Tinkle. If the GRIZ finish in the Top 3 and/or win the BSC tourney, he gets a 3 year extension. If neither happens, then a 1 year extension. The only way he gets let go is if this team is well below .500 in the conference.
