What I heard last weekend w/ someone real tight w/ the program (Lady Griz hoops).

1 & 2) The pluses on our (Griz fans) side: She's a "homebody", so to speak. And her parents played here.

3) And one thing that will probably determine her decision: How well the mens team does/fathers employment.

If that's what she's basing her decision on, I'm not holding out much hope that she'll be a Lady Griz. Would the Griz admin re-sign Wayne just to get her to sign with the Lady Griz?

YES, not often an all american is in our backyard. Besides Tinkle runs a clean program, recruits well, is learning on the job. I feel the GRIZ will have very good year this year, and Tinkle deserves the opportunity to coach a team with the majority being his own recruits. Hasquet was not his recruit but is tight with Tinkle. As for the other SR, Sharp, he also gets along well and respects Tinkle. If the GRIZ finish in the Top 3 and/or win the BSC tourney, he gets a 3 year extension. If neither happens, then a 1 year extension. The only way he gets let go is if this team is well below .500 in the conference.

I was thinking about whether O'Day would resign Tinkle just to be able to sign JT. I kind of put myself in his shoes, and thought, would I resign WT, just so we can get JT? then I realize, O'Day is responsible for the whole athletic department's welfare. Not just one program. Cannot jeapardize one program to benefit another unless both can benefit at the same time.

So, O'Day will not be resign Wayne just to get JT. O'Day will resign Wayne based on results like any other coach. Let's hope that the Griz basketball team plays well enough to support resigning Wayne, and well enough to make it a three year contract.

If Griz BB team shows improvement from the past two years, Wayne's contract should be extended.

I'm sure you meant 're-sign'... as opposed to 'resign'.

I'm hoping Tinkle won't have given O' Day any reason to consider not renewing his contract. Better yet, I'm hoping the team will give us fans reason to worry about whether or not Tinks will stick around after a couple or three awesome seasons. :twocents:

how stupid can montana be? tinkle is a rising star in the coaching ranks, a great representative of the university, arguably the best recruiter we've seen here in years. i'd sign him to a three-year extension right now, and renew it every year. then when the big schools come calling, we'll either have won his favor to stay put, or be in a position to get a nice buyout. if tinkle were a stock, he'd be starbucks '93; a politician, obama '02.

a word to our a.d.: you have to know the future to make history, and this is a great chance for you to take a little short-term heat from the hysterical chicken-littles in return for a much bigger long-term payoff, and a large share of the credit.

In college sports it comes down to fan / booster support. I know everyone thinks it is wins and losses, and it is to a degree. Wins and losses, though, drive the boosters /fans to show support for a coach yes. The fans and booster are the actual key, if you want Tinkle long term let O'Day know. Tell your buddy(s) to write O'Day. Make a short and sweet argument why you think Tinkle should be signed to another 3 year contract. If O'Day feels he has the support of the Griz boosters it will be much easier, for him to pull the trigger. We all know Tinkle is very much loved in the athletic department, give them a reason to sign him.

Egrizer's you really can make a difference here, and it is real easy to do. One email to O'Day and another Email to you Griz buddies. If you like Tinkle that is not that difficult .

All personal relationships aside, how does anyone know Tinkle is a great coach? Simply based on his recruiting ability? I know that in college sports recruiting is half the job, if not more, but might we want to let Tinkle have one good season as coach before he is proclaimed the next big thing?

that's my take. these past two teams haven't been as talented as future teams might be, but they were better than their records showed.

GD you bring a a good point, you do not know if Tinkle is a great coach yet, but by the same token you do not know if you could find a better coach to replace him. You also do not know if Larry K. could have continued his great two years of success with Kennedy's players once they graduated and Larry's recruits step up. Remember everyone of Larry K's recruits fail miserably at UM with the possible exception of Mathews.

Tinkles results the past two years have been modest at best, and I understand a lot of people are not too, happy with the results, and I understand the apprehension some may have with that. Still there are others that feel Tinkle has not been given enough time to prove himself and see a great deal of potential. My self I fall into the latter category. I am just at least a year away from giving him an ultimatum stage. I have talked to a fair amount of people who know more about basketball than I do and to a person all think Tinkle is the perfect guy for the Griz.

Now you can cut bait at the end of the season and say he had his three years, or you can say maybe three year is not enough. Maybe there is something we like or see in Tinkle that gives us pause to think you do have a coach to keep around.

I respect GD opinion, it is one that many basketball fans may have, but hiring a new coach is a crap shoot at best, and before you do you better make sure the best man for the job is not the man who already has the job.

I think it depends on the amount of success we see this year. I'm not saying it's tourney or bust but if this team is even worse and more inconsistent than the last two years, we have to take a serious look at whether or not he really is the guy to go to.

to be the head coach of a college basketball program, you have to have a variety of skills, from administration to public relations to recruiting to "x's and o's", not to mention qualities of parenting, mentoring and motivating. a good head coach should be outstanding in one or more of these categories, but i think it's expecting a lot for a coach not to have some gaps in his resume.

what i like about tinkle is that he brings outstanding qualities to areas like public relations and recruiting, where it seems to me you either have a knack or you don't, and is able to instantly earn the respect of the post players he recruits and coaches. as to the rest, you can learn administration, and you can hire x's and o's, as phil jackson did with tex winter, and doc rivers of the celtics did with armond hill, who was responsible for the stellar celtic defense we saw this spring. a capable a.d. should be able to evaluate these qualities, and help a coach shore up his weaknesses--if there's a foundation there with which to work. with tinkle, the foundation is there for exceptional success, if the necessary ingredient of patience is added to the mix.

I believe we have the best man for the job in Tinks.

Let me add one more thing to your list of things a coach "either has a knack for or doesn't"... Winning.
