Joslyn Tinkle

c'mon, expecting to see joslyn in a final four at stanford is stretching it a bit. this is their first trip in eleven years, and it's on the strength of an exceptional once-in-a-generation athlete in candice wiggins. if you want to see joslyn in a final four, you should be urging her to go to uconn or tennessee or l.s.u. or even rutgers, where she'd be another out-of-town gunslinger, as at kansas, where not one of their top eight players was from the state showing on their uniform, and not a single kid from kansas played in last night's game.
Your challenging my thought is a stretch. Stanford is in the Final Four and the championship game tonight. So that means that Stanford has the CHANCE to go back to the Final Four again, and has a greater opportunity to go than UM. So, my point was that if she doesn't come here, I would rather watch her play for a team that is in the West. I would never wish to see her go to UCONN or Tennessee. Her opportunities are as great going to Stanford or staying home in Missoula.

terrible women's championship game tonight, unlike the men, who gave us a thrilling epic of a final game. this looked more like a 16 seed against a one seed, where you expected them at any moment to cut away to a more exciting game--and i'm sure many viewers did cut away. actually, stanford looked a little like montana, talented but slow white girls just being out-hustled and out-quicked by superior athletes. stanford hung around but this game was never in doubt, and only tennessee's numerous mistakes kept the score within striking distance.

i've always been a big fan of the women's game but this game tonight won few converts, i'll guarantee you that.

You can say that again. It was painful to watch. Stanford had two players who looked like they belonged, Wiggins and Pederson. The rest were physcially out matched, plain and simple.

Ugly game but hard to draw to many conclusions from one game. I think Stanford beat Tenn earlier in the year. They picked a bad time to have a bad game or Tenn really cranked up their game.

They did beat Tennessee early in the year in Palo Alto I believe. It was close but Tennessee got revenge tonight.

NW Blazers – 2008 Riverside TOC Champions
AUBURN, Wash. - An MVP caliber weekend from Joslyn Tinkle led the Northwest Blazers to the Riverside TOC Championship and earned the 6-foot-4 forward the MVP award. The Blazers are now 16-0 in the fresh club season after winning the Arizona Elite Spring Classic last weekend.

The Blazers defeated Category 5, the team that knocked off the host team Auburn Riverside, in the final 56-33. The team’s opening game started out a little rough against Premier Elite but a second half run gave them a 17-point margin of victory. In the tournament no team played the Blazers closer than 17 though Y.E.A. was in striking distance, down seven with five minutes to play.

Tournament MVP Joslyn Tinkle with a
hook over two defenders. The Blazers have a little bit of everything despite playing without one of their best wing players, Jordan Sullivan. Sullivan lives in Sidney, Mont., which is about as far east in Montana as you can get without stumbling into North Dakota. The location is also nearly 300 miles from a regional airport in Billings. That accompanied with a Friday night track meet left the Blazers down one.

The Blazer’s perimeter players were still plenty good without Sullivan. Led by the trio of Kellie McCann-Smith, Jazmine Redmon and Danielle Walter the Blazers backcourt looked as solid as any in the tournament and maybe in the west.

McCann-Smith scored the ball well, Redmon flies all over the court challenging any and all ball handlers and Walter’s flare for the highlight play together can be overwhelming for the opposition.

Because Riverside Select lost their opening game to Category 5 the brackets never yielded the showdown between the Blazer’s guards and Riverside’s duo of Nichole Jackson and Mercedes Wetmore.

But let’s not forget what sets this team apart from the rest in the area-- it has Tinkle. At 6-4 she is as mobile as many wings and her touch and ability to finish is nothing short of incredible. There simply aren’t too many players as skilled as this young lady, anywhere. Tinkle is basically unstoppable as Southridge found out in their quarterfinals.

Jazmine Redmon attacks the hoop at
the Riverside TOC.Many teams employ a zone defense to try and slow Tinkle down but you never see her frustrated or pressing to make a play. She and her teammates are very patient and work the ball around to get a good shot. They score the ball well from the perimeter so the Blazers are not one dimensional offensively.

They are not singular geographically either with players from three states. A majority of the players are from Spokane, Wash., while three join the squad from Montana and one player, Hanna Potter, is from Edina, Minn.

So impressive were the Blazers that they not only took home the High School Elite division but their 14U team took home the High School Division championship. This summer the Blazer’s look forward to proving themselves against the top sponsored programs from around the country and having seen many of these teams already this season I can say they are more than capable of competing. The End of the Trail hosted by Oregon City High School, July 6-9, will be their first opportunity as teams from all over the country congregate for what has become the premier event on the west coast.

would play pick up ball in the rec annex. They could hold their own, but were not dominating the court against hungover, Pizza Pipline eating guys.

That's an interesting observation. But really, haven't the Tennessee and some other college women's bb team been doing exactly that the last couple or so years? Been holding practises against an all-male team? I remember playing in some pickup games in the rec annex a while back when I was on the opposite side going up against a team that had a Jeanne McNulty and a Shari Thesenvitz. [Of couse, there was a Derrick Pope as well, but, I mean, really guys; against a bunch of hungover hyperboles?]
Those hungover, Pizza Pipline eating son of a chauvinistic pig lowlifes couldn't do diddley shit!!!!

Yeah sure, if you're dirt and play like it, you'll probably win. For what it's worth. Something to pound your chest over, I guess. Big Deal. I'am not impressed.

Drop names like Kevin Love and O. J. Mayo. Oh, they're just some kind of players that were on some so-called 'decent' high school team one year removed. I see.
Yeah, I keep forgetting, Montana has some decent high school teams that complete on a national level every year. Yeah, right. Interesting comparison, there. nice reach there for an adequate put-down mr. bobby riggs. Couldn't do much better myself, I dear say. When you can't beat up on the guys anymore beat up on the chicks I guess.
Next you can say that Wilt Chamberlain would beat the shit out of a Lisa Leslie any day of the week. Who knows, you may be right. for what it's worth lowlife.

So get your couple six packs and guzzle it down. Pass out and wake up in the gutter; seems to be some type of puberty rite of passage around these here parts.

I don't mean to rain on your trip down memory lane, but when Shari Thesenvitz was a senior at UM, Jean McNulty was probably a freshman or sophmore in high school. Shari graduated from UM in 83, Jean in 1990.

Interesting that her "interested in" section includes Cal, Arizona, Louisville, Georgia and Iowa State. No listing of any of the Stanford or other rumors that have appeared on the board. And also no mention of Montana.

Somewhat old info on the colleges looking at her. Keep an eye om the Ivy League, that where my money is at.

It will be either Stanford (leading candidate) or UM that Joslyn plays for. You heard it here 1st.

I still say keep your eye's out for an Ivy League school or two. I hear she is working very hard to qualify for a upper tier educational school like a Stanford or Ivy league. I am not saying it is a sure thing but, do not underestimating the pull an Ivy league school has for the Tinkle family.

I will delegate someone else to watch Ivy Leagure schools. I am willing to wager with anyone on Stanford or UM. Any takers?

Big Sky's Big FishBy Clay Kallam

The product of two University of Montana standouts steps onto the national stages - and sticks it.

STORY BY CLAY KALLAM; PHOTOS BY GLENN NELSON

Joslyn Tinkle overcame a "nerve-wracking" environment at USA Basketball.
In Big Sky country, Joslyn Tinkle, at 6 feet 3, is the big fish – but at USA Basketball’s U18 National Team Trials last week in Colorado Springs, Colo., she was just another post.

"I’m the biggest player in Montana," said Tinkle, "and I come here and I’m like a midget. It‘s awesome to see."

Well, maybe not a midget exactly – slender point guard Samantha Prahalis would be glad to be 5-8, much less 6-3 – but still Tinkle can’t just go in the paint and dominate as she does back home. "I consider myself a strong girl back in Montana, but I called my parents and said ‘I’m going to have to hit the weight room.' "

Joslyn Tinkle has college-hoops genes. Her parents will understand, as both were outstanding players at the University of Montana in Missoula, where, in fact, her dad is now the head coach for the men’s team. But don’t think that Tinkle, one of the surprise picks for the U18 team, is just some country girl who gets dazzled when she sees a left-turn lane. She was born in Stockholm, and spent her first eight years following her father around Europe as he played professional basketball.

After that, though, the family returned home and settled in Missoula, where Wayne Tinkle became an assistant for the Grizzlies and the former Linda McLeod returned to the campus where she was the all-time fourth leading scorer. Not surprisingly, Joslyn turned to basketball, as did her younger siblings Elle and Trace.

Elle, in fact, will most likely play on the Big Sky High School team with Joslyn this fall, as the Eagles try to defend their 2A state championship. "She’s a good little player," said big sister, though "little" might not be quite the right word: Elle is a 6-0 high school freshman.

Big Sky lost eight seniors, and all the other starters aside from Joslyn, so Elle might get thrown into the fire – just as Joslyn did at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

"There were definitely some nerves," said Tinkle of her first experience with USA Basketball. "It’s nerve-wracking, but it also helps. You don’t get a lot of recognition in Montana."

The word’s trickling out about Tinkle, though, and she hopes that this kind of exposure gives her the opportunity to sign early. As a 6-3 post with solid fundamentals inside, plus the ability to step out and hit the jumper, Tinkle would be a good get for any program. She’s not certain what schools she’s interested in – Montana is definitely on the list – so she’ll take her visits before deciding.

Tinkle also will spend the fall on the high-school volleyball team and taking a break from hoops. "I enjoy playing a lot," she says. "It helps."

But after learning lessons from the bigger, stronger, older bigs at the U18 tryouts, the people who are really going to need help are the posts back in Montana. Tinkle was the big fish to begin with, and after Colorado Springs, the Big Sky pond will seem even smaller.
