Joining the Mountain West would run an $8MM - $9MM annual deficit - can we overcome that?

For having the highest viewership games in the FCS and having the brawl of the wild and only receive 86K in media rights is poor, someone in charge needs to renegioatate media rights.
HHB and others will say it can't be done to benefit UM and MSU. Others will say BSU found a way to do it with the MWC.

Wyoming Financials for last year:

Wyoming reports a total of $3.45 million in media rights and $2.17 million in additional football conference distribution (i.e. bowl payouts, playoff distribution, NCAAT credits, etc..), $791,695 for men's basketball NCAAT distribution, $0 for women's NCAAWT basketball distribution and $23,702 for other sports distribution (wrestling and volleyball??)for a total of roughly $6.38. million in conference/NCAA distribution.

That is From Page 9 in the link below

So almost an immediate $6.4 million dollar jump if you get full MWC $$.
Will NDSU get any of that?

That’s 5 million roughly. NDSU got 10 million from donors/sponors and yes in the long run they will receive more revenue in the MWC than BSC and Summit league.
I thought NDSU wasn’t getting any of that.
$10 million is one-time. Think UM had $6 million from donors last year.

North Dakota State University (NDSU) will not receive any financial distributions from the Mountain West (MW) Conference. As part of their agreement to join as a football-only member, NDSU agreed to forgo access to conference or College Football Playoff revenues until at least 2032. [1, 2]
The main financial terms of the transition include:
  • Entry Fee: NDSU will pay a near $12 million entry fee to the Mountain West.
  • NCAA Fee: The school will also pay $5 million to the NCAA to officially transition from the FCS to the FBS subdivision.” Gemini.

The 10 million is from there giving day. Pretty impressive.

$10 million is a one-time gift. FBS isn't a one-time cost. UM got $6.3 million from donors last year, without doing anything special in fund-raising, to my knowledge.
What’s your point. 10 million Is more than 6.3 both one time gifts. NDSU received enough money around 20 million to make the move. They did there feasibility study and the move in the long run is worth more than staying FCS with jersey patches and exposure.

My point is you think $10 million from donors is such a huge thing. I don’t. It’s a drop in the bucket.

They need to pay $17.5 million of fees to move up. They don’t get conf distributions for years.

They need to increase their annual football budget by $10 million to get to the MW average.

You move up cheerleaders make me laugh.

Great for NDSU.

Great for NDSU.
And yet NDSU had a dedicated campaign to move up, they planned for this, they ran the numbers and it’s best for there long term success. 10 million is nothing to sneeze at, how much have they raised over the last 3 years.

Only time will tell if this was a good move but why are some of the best FCS looking to move up.

Yes, NDSU planned for it. I assume they will pull it off and do well. But, I'm sorry $10 million isn't some incredible donor raise, and NDSU is in a different position than MSU and UM. And NDSU didn't have to bring UND with them/ They have more access to money than UM. They don't have to move their sports other than football. Their fans were falling off due to boredom. They were in a position where they needed to consider doing something. They can expand their seating and sell more tickets, presumably at a higher price. UM is closer to being maxed out with attendance and prices, I am told. Good for them.

And UM has looked at the numbers and had a feasibility study done in the past, which concluded that move-up wasn't a good idea or something like that. And UM has run the numbers multiple times and concluded that staying at FCS level is where they should be.

Some of the best FCS schools are looking to move up because FCS isn't working for them like it is for UM. And they are looking at funding sources and see some paths. Some have more state support. Some can expand their seating and raise their prices. I don't think NDSU is planning to do this initially. Some of more desirable to conferences where there is a fit. Some are in bigger metro areas. Some have better tv potential. Some are in the middle of fertile recruiting areas and/or closer to them.

Fargo's metro area has twice the population of Missoula. ND has more oil and gas than Montana.
