Jake Wiley, hoops to football

Delaney confirmed Tuesday that Jake Wiley has joined the football team. The 6-foot-6 California native quit the UM basketball team earlier this month and he is concentrating on the wide receiver position, targeting 2014.

That is interesting stuff. At his height and his athleticism, he could be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams. I am sure he is fast enough as he also ran track last spring. 400 I think? I hope it works out for him. He could make me less sad that Horner quit in the fall. Could turn out really well for him and for the football team. Glad he is still in school most of all.

Anyone know what year of eligibility he will be next season?
Presumably sophomore. He played one year of hoops for the Griz and did not use a redshirt year.

Not sure why he couldn't play bball thus year. I guess he knew he wasn't comin back and wanted to focus on school and football

I suspect he wanted to get a jump on practicing football. He may really be a player. His high school football credentials and athleticism are impressive.

I think Wiley will be everything that Mitch Saylor has not been. Imagine Wiley, Marq Rogers and Mike Ralston in the redzone in the coming years. Fun to look ahead at that. Wiley has tons of potential athletically. Let's hope his run & jump ability translates to the Football field.

He was a three-year starter in basketball (4 letters) and football (3 letters) in high school, and also letter one letter in track. In his senior year in football, Wiley had 52 receptions for 875 yards and 8 touchdowns to go with 2 rushing TDs and 2 TDs on kickoff returns for the Newport Grizzlies.

I look forward to seeing him on the field. But I also think he really could have helped Wayne and been a good player for the Griz.

Kinda disappointed that he isn't playing hoops too, but the prospect of throwing him jump balls in the end-zone is sweet. The guy has some serious springs.

Yeah its too bad about basketball but I'm really excited to see what he can do in football.

To be honest I think he was looking forward in all the success that the basketball players have had in the NFL at tight end (Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, Julius Thomas- Portland State) to name a few. To add fuel to the fire he has actual experience playing football and understands the game where as some those guys previously mentioned never even put on pads or played before. He has a really bright future if he can put it all together and he is quick and can jump out of the gym!

Plus he has WR speed. WR or TE, imagine what a Redzone weapon this guy will be. He can leap out of the gym. Good luck Jake!!!
