Its Time to Clean House.

Will I go as far as saying, "Our offensive staff has to step it up, in order for the talent to meet their potential"? Yes

Our offensive play calling inconsistency is maddening, frustrating, and agonizing. Myself and some other posters have been criticizing the offensive play calling for not mixing things up, limiting our talent, and not helping our young OL. We have been hoping for a break out type of game with offensive play calling. Much to my surprise, I was actually a very pleased and happy fan, which I give the staff credit for. Too bad that only lasted 1 half!!! After finally showing a sign this staff can mix things up, and actually give us an effective fun offense, they mailed it and put it back in "reverse" for the whole 2nd half.

The 1st half they consistently called plays utilizing the middle 2/3's of the field. They called quick passes. They moved the ball effectively because they mixed things up. They did plenty to keep a defense guessing, and to account for every player and the whole field. They called a wide variety of plays. Their game plan actually kept JJ clean, and helped our young OL. I honestly could not ask for more or better with the offensive play calling.

Prior to this game, I had broke down what things needed to be done for the offense to better succeed. I guaranteed, if this offense could do these things we would see success. We saw that success and what this offense is capable when the offensive play calling picks up their game. Seriously, that was one damn fine offense when the staff stepped up their game. For me, that is an offense I'd like to see all the time. Question for you all. Does that kind of play calling make this offense much better, than the few screens, and long ball play calling? Can you support an offense like we saw for the 1st half? For me, the offensive staff proved to me they are plenty capable of doing what is necessary for a great offense. That 1st half offense is an offense I can fully support as a fan.

Now that I gave them their due credit, here is some constructive criticism and questions. Why only settle for one great half of offensive play calling and execution? I don't know why, only this staff knows why. I can tell you, this fan was extremely let down and disappointed by the offensive play calling in the 2nd half. The 2nd half was a perfect opportunity to fine tune things, and work on things this offense needs to improve on. It was an opportunity to build our depth and get that depth experience in more than just handing off the damn ball!!

I respect personally and professionally not running up the score. What I do not understand is taking rest the game off, when there was plenty of work to be done to improve this team. Why not continue to mix things up with the play calling to get the offense more confident in their ability to perform and execute consistently? Move the ball consistently to our opponents red zone, then work on improving our other weakness, our kicking game. I honestly feel it would be hugely beneficial to get our FG kicking team another 3 to 4 opportunities to find their consistency. Hell did our staff even think of that opportunity?

If you are satisfied with 1 half of great offense, then why not get Gustafson and/or Simis in the game for at least quarter to mix things up and give them real game experience doing more than handing the ball off? Again a perfect learning opportunity delivered to the coaching staff. What did they do with that opportunity? They sent it back with "Return to Sender"!!!

Not only did the offensive play calling not take advantage of learning opportunities, but they let the defense down. We have a few too many injuries on the defensive side of the ball. Continuing to work on the offense, would have kept some key defensive players off the field for more rest. It would have also made their stats look much better for their efforts. Instead, we still have our defense on the field longer than we should have, and increase the chances of more injuries.

Great job coaches on a terrific 1st half. Why continue to settle for one great half?? This staff just sent mixed messages not only to the fans but their players. Coaches preach to players about giving it their all for a whole game. Yet, how are players supposed to 100% buy into that when our offensive staff cannot give it their all for more than a half? For the benefit of this team improving, more morale, and confidence, can this staff commit to a full game of proper play calling and learning opportunity? This staff pissed away 1 half of opportunity in the UNC game.

Here is to hoping they will commit to full games of coaching 100%. If that is done, this team can be amongst the best in the nation this year and live up their talent. Coaches, please quit selling yourselves and players short!!!!
how dare you you are a bad fan for even thinking about considering wanting more than what you got...

Progress = Yes

OBTW, when UM blocked the punt and we had it at ~ 10-yard line, I stood up and screamed "eGriz wants a short slant pass or a screen pass" They heard me and called a short pass play for 6 points. Keep up the good work eGriz.

i do agree it is very boring to watch but people saying that the attendance is going down is wrong, the crowd was at 25,269 yesterday!

You are kidding of course. There were at least 2000 empty seats yesterday including almost the entire South end zone section below the big screen. This would have never been the case during the Read, Dennehy, Glenn, or Hauck eras.

When I see one of the UM coaches, I will tell them "you're welcome" for all the eGriz wisdom and guidance. It is your offensive wizardry that made all the difference against UNC.

I won't debate the clean house argument. I will gauge level of interest by comparing Egriz and BN. The BN game (vs UND) thread was actually longer than the Egriz one. Something is seriously wrong people. Seriously wrong. Time to clean house.

I go back for homecoming every year. Every time we play a weak opponent, it is the same thing with empty seats in the 2nd half. I'm guilty. I went out at half time, saw several people that I hadn't seen in a long time and spent half of the 3rd quarter talking with them. If we were playing a tougher opponent in a closer game, I would have been back in my seat sooner. Some of my friends stayed out at the tailgates the entire 2nd half. Had noting to do with the game, the coaching, the administration, or anything else other than it was a close game and they were more interested in catching up with friends. My thought is that most people that didn't go back into the game were doing the same thing.

Very bias and misplaced blame...

Dupuyer, don't be an idiot. Grizrule's post is perfectly fine, by anyone's standards. Note that Grizrule started his post by disagreeing with the thread title. The play of the Griz early in the game was outstanding, minus 1 play. The game was in hand by the end of the first quarter. Everyone, including the players and coaches wishes the team had been more focused and played better after that, especially in the second half.

The official attendance was larger than the stated stadium capacity. There weren't 2,000 empty seats earlier in the game. That SEZ section behind the goal post wasn't empty, and it doesn't come close to having 2,000 seats. The boxes were full. The stadium club and decks were full. Lots of beer being consumed in those places. I assume there were lots of people tailgating outside during the first half. Huge tailgating outside. The NEZ was terrific early in the game and at other times in the first half. 5 false start penalties by NC. It was a terrific in and at the stadium

You sir, continue to confirm the fact that you are a narcissistic tool. You seem to be oblivious at the many posters who try to tell you that fact, some overtly and some covertly. Your sense of self-worth has been noted....... over and over and over again.

I don't know about cleaning house but I am getting concerned that the 2nd half of the games are getting pretty predictable. We better be ahead at half because second half adjustments to improve our chances at success are non-existant. I'm afraid we are going to be in big trouble against EWU and MSU.

I liked the game a whole bunch and winning makes the trip back to Reno easier. I'd like to score more points in the 2nd half, the game was never in doubt. Let me know how the haters are when this team wins out. (Oh and that's going to happen).

We blow out a team early and coast and all you do is whine. I'm tired of hearing people whine. We won, we played well most the game. The coaches completed all their goals. Griz nation would be better without a lot of these whining little "fans" who think they know more about football than the coaches, players and staff. Your stupid, this thread is stupid, and I'm stupid for wasting time writing on this post.

Yes we won, and everyone is happy with the win. To each is their own. Some us just feel the staff sold themselves and the team short. They threw away a great opportunity to improve something things that need fine tuned, and building depth.

Beyond the W, the offensive staff accomplished very little. That is not bitching, it is constructive criticism. To me, it is pretty accurate also. If this staff continues to not fully utilize opportunities to teach, and players to learn, this team will again fall short come playoff time. We have a top 5 team from talent stand point. We have a playoff pretender from a coaching standpoint. The offensive coaching staff could do much better to improve this team. They finally proved that in the 1st half. It is disappointing when they stopped and hindered further offensive development.

So one week of lowered number of pages posted on a game thread is evidence that there is something seriously wrong? I'm betting some of the reasons we didn't have that long of a game thread this week are: 1) Homecoming, some of the out of town posters were actually in MSLA for the game. 2) It's hunting season. 3) The second half of that game was just plain boring, not much to comment on. 4) Az wasn't posting, he's usually good for a page and 1/2 on his own.

I will bet that next weekend the game thread will be back near 20 pages and nearly double that of bn.

Never ever thought I'd say this. This coaching staff has to go and along with them any administrator who thinks otherwise.

There are the football purists who love the game and every nuance about it savor every statistic and debate every call, play for weeks soetimes years. Thats great. They stayed home yesterday because it was just UNC.

There are the rabid fans who despite the fact the never could or once may have been think they are on the team. There are the super booster who spend $$$$$$ for the chance to be insiders and their egos stroked. They were there but pissed.

But yesterday was the first visible signs of the "end" The rest of us or as my buddy put it, the ones who fill 22,000 seats making the program possible for the guys above were beyond pissed. They spent hundreds of dollars and a day of their time despite dozens of alternatives to be "entertained". They weren't.

The coaches were playing a technical game that neither the players or crowd cared about. The excitement lasted one quarter. We barely won the second quarter. It was flat early in. The late crowd at half never came back. The rest started leaving. Its pretty sad when the group in my session start cheering for a third string quarter back on the opposing team, who is having the best day of his life.

As my wife pointed out for what we spent with season tickets, booster fees, brunch dinner etc etc. We could have flown to Seattle seen a great game, and an even greater meal, and really had some fun. We could finish out the season like this win every game take a great run for a Naty, and still wonder why.

The sad thing is most of us would sooner have a great game, and great experience win or lose, than a day like yesterday.

The opinion of TNT is as valid as yours. In fact, looking at 4 of the last 5 games sorta validates TNT'S points. Remember, this is Northern Colorado we are talking about as well. If the game was so one sided, I actually agree that the back ups be allowed to see actual game experience. At the rate of injuries UM is having, exceeding everything I have seen recently, it might have been a good plan, Of course, that raises the question of why so many injuries and could it be the style of play the coaching staff employs? Over conditioning? Or, do the Griz play with more 'abandon' than other teams, even the weak sisters of the Big Sky...Lots of questions about this staff by the fans who have supported UM for years. It is easy to kill the golden goose, as Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame, Washington, Youngstown, Appalachian and many others have done. It is hard to rebuild a champion level confidence (swagger?) once it is lost.
