FORMER OREGON QB JUSTIN ROPER JOINS GRIZZLY FOOTBALL PROGRAM
MISSOULA, MONTANA (July 1, 2009) - Former University of Oregon
quarterback Justin Roper has accepted a scholarship offer to play
football for The University of Montana Grizzlies, announced UM Head
Coach Bobby Hauck.
A 6-6, 205-pounder, Roper, who started four games for the Ducks,
will be a junior eligibility-wise and is expected to compete for the
starting job at Montana.
"I was looking to find some playing time in a system that best
suits me, and I felt like Oregon was going in a different direction, so
we parted ways" said Roper, who recently moved to Missoula, when asked
why he came to UM. "Obviously Montana has a great football tradition.
They have a great following and they win. It just seemed like a great
fit."
Roper, from Buford, Georgia, played in six games last season at
Oregon, and was sidelined with a knee injury that he suffered against
Purdue which forced him to miss four games. Last year he was 48-of-91-4
(.527) passing for 610 yards and three touchdowns, and he also rushed 17
times for 85 yards and a score.
The highlight of his career at Oregon came in 2007 as a redshirt
freshman when he led the Ducks to a 56-21 Sun Bowl victory over South
Florida, as he passed for a bowl record four touchdowns, completing
17-of-30-0 for 180 yards in his first career start. He played in five
games as a redshirt frosh, going 32-of-61-2 (.525) for 342 yards and six
touchdowns. He was a redshirt at UO in 2006.
He was a PrepStar all-region pick and ranked among the top 75
prospects in Georgia and one of the top 28 quarterbacks in the nation
following his senior year's 12-1 record and 8-AA league championship at
Buford High School.
His senior year he threw for more than 1,423 yards and 18
touchdowns despite playing for a run-oriented system. The Wolves went
25-3 over his final two prep years, and his team set a Georgia high
school record by winning 47 games in a row.
He was a versatile, four-sport letterman as a prep, competing in
football, basketball, track and field, and swimming. He was a starting
guard in basketball, finished third in the state high jump (6-6), and
was clocked in at 1:04 in the 100-meter breaststroke. His high school
football coach was Jess Simpson.
His parents are Brad and Donna Roper. His birth date is July
28, 1987. He is undecided on a major.
