It happenin

They care deeply about the programs and their rivalry. It's the only real sports the communities have. Unfortunately the programs themselves have been horrible at hiring and consistently blown opportunities to grow said enthusiasm. As for the Pac-6... I think that they might go one of two different ways. One would be what you suggest - UNLV for sure, and maybe SJSU after that. OR, I could see them trying something much different - enticing 6 eastern schools, maybe from the AAC (Memphis, Tulane, etc.) and splitting into a western and eastern division. Basically taking the best of the current G5 and dividing them into two regional divisions to ease travel burdens.

But who knows. Will be interesting to watch.
I know the "geographic" thing has pretty much gone away in the P4, but GAWD I hope they don't do that "eastern" thing...college football has just about destroyed any semblance of rivalries at this point...

And to the first point, if they were THAT heavily invested and cared so deeply about the programs, they'd have more than 12,000 peoples' butts in the seats on fall Saturdays. So, agree to disagree there, I guess. I live in Texas and I just don't see it.

And so much for this theory according to Rainey's recent tweet. Unbelievable.
Yeah, I don't know if I'd put a great deal of stock into his claim that there have been "no" discussions. Of course there have been discussions. For years. Now, I would buy that there likely hasn't been any specific convos, involving specifics like dollars and logistics.

But anyone who believes the ADs and Presidents at theses universities haven't had the "hey, if we happened to have an opening at some point, would you guys be interested" discussions with the mtw is crazy.

From the article (near the end) New Mexico State, new to Conference USA, makes geographic sense. So does UTEP, also in CUSA. Both programs would likely see a doubling of annual distribution. Could they even get a signing bonus? The Mountain West is due as much as $110 million in exit and penalty fee money from the departing four members and the Pac-12.

Keep in mind that the NCAA recently increased the entrance fee for those moving from FCS to FBS to a whopping $5 million.
So, if a conference wants the future revenue from a Montana or Dakota FB program, work a deal where the conference fronts the fee and deducts it from the school’s distribution until it’s paid-off. Also known as a loan. I don’t think we need $5 million in gold bars buried in Folgers cans under Old Dornblaser to make it work.

In today's market Wyoming would be no different than ISU. The Kaboys only have what they have due to history. If the MWC should choose to expand, invitations will not be based on who beat who recently, but on money and markets. In the absence of either, it will be on projected potential.

Really? I heard a whole bunch of nothingspeak about fit and unknowns, which seem obvious.

Nothing in there suggested that we wouldn't move up if there was an invite.

Also, what I meant by my comment was that the MWC has absolutely contacted schools it's interested in. If Montana hasn't had that conversation, then they aren't interested.

For starters, these moves to the PAC12 literally happened this morning. So maybe the Mountain west hasn't exactly picked up the phone in the first few hours and rather are meeting with their presidents and officials in the conference office to determine what the next steps are.

Secondly, just because Haslam said no conversations have taken place, doesn't mean he's telling the truth. This conference re-alignment stuff has been held very close to the vest with any school that's been involved so far. They haven't exactly been running out to the media disclosing that they're changing conferences. Also Haslam said no invitation has been offered. Well no shit. The MWC is not in a position to be extending offers a mere 5 hours later after they got raided by the PAC12. Things move fast, but not that fast.

How about we just wait and see how things unfold in the coming days and weeks? Odds are conversations will start taking place in the very near future.

I agree, but I also doubt the MW has even had a chance to meet after this news. They already knew SDSU was flirting last year. And realistically would Haslam tip his hand to Rainey if he had a preliminary discussion? Clearly these 4 schools kept it pretty quiet until today.

I can probably guarantee that the MWC was not surprised by the announcement last night. They probably knew this was coming for a while, and have had conversations with schools as a contingency plan for probably even longer.

What I don’t understand is this. Some people say oh I want to play for championships not in some mediocre bowl game. I got news for those people. The fcs title game IS a mediocre bowl game!!!! If you want a t shirt that says fcs champions on it I will make one for you and in essence it will be no different than the shirts that say liberty bowl champions, holiday bowl champions, Detroit motor city bowl champions, Sun bowl champions and the list goes on folks. I say it’s time to run with the bigger dogs and get out of a dying fcs.
I learned long, long ago that I will never convince anyone of anything on this subject. The one caveat I would suggest, though, is that many on the side that say they want to stay for the FCS title game, it is for the playoff run and feeling like there is a true championship at the end. Whether you agree with them or not, playing in any bowl game just isn't as interesting/exciting to some people as a playoff run. I am one of those people, so I'm a little biased, but yes I would rather play the likes of UND and Idaho in a playoff situation leading to a championship rather than playing Marshall in a bowl game.

Did they though? A couple weeks ago, all signs were pointing towards the 2 leagues maintaining their scheduling alliance, and then literally last week the PAC12 changed their mind and reversed course on it

I don't know what the contracts look like between the teams and the conferences, but I'd keep everything close to the vest as well. You don't want to worry about any kind of tampering, tortious interference, or NDA issues to arise. If I was in Haslem's shoes, the first time I mentioned the move to anyone would be when I called the Big Sky Commissioner's office to say goodbye, and that I had nothing further to say about it.

If they didn't have a contingency plan for this, then they are incompetent. Who thought things would stay this way for any actual amount of time?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I highly doubt what people have been hearing in the news is what's also been going on behind the scenes. These moves did not come out of nowhere on a whim.
