Is Delaney the next Don Read?

This is the most ridicufuckinglous thread title and subject of all time. You can not find a dumber idea in the history of the world.

Quit sugar coating it stubbins. Tell us how you really feel   Honestly, I could not agree more with you. Thank God we have phenomenal athletes who keep winning games for us. Mediocre coaching, but we still keep winning. I will take the W's and hope MD decides to gracefully retire after this year. If the Griz make the playoffs he can claim success and ride off into the sunset and play golf. He has to be tired at his age. Stress is a bitch for a young man/coach. If he is not stressed - then we have a completely different problem!

I'm not as eloquent as stubbins, but I agree with you both. Delaney is an awful nice guy, but he should enjoy football by watching it on a 65 inch screen from the comfort of his living room.

Well I think we got something sweeter than yoowho with Delaney. My money is on Mick hanging some flags real soon.
I am not a betting person, but I will make a wager with you. If the Griz hang a NC banner this year, I will run around downtown Missoula drooling and wearing nothing but depends with Go Cats written on the butt. And you have to do the same if they don't win the NC.

I do believe the Griz have the players to go all the way. I think they had at least a playoff team last year. I just don't feel we have the coaching. I would love to be proven wrong.

You're bananas! You think we had atleast a playoff team last year? With a FRESHMAN QB that looked like a deer caught in the headlights, and he even admitted it. You've taken one too many flights over the kookoo nest.

Delaney has forgot more about football than this whole board put together.
That might be true but this forum doesn't coach the Griz. I have no concern about how much Mick has forgotten. I am more interested in what he remembers. It doesn't appear to be enough.

Players largely win or lose the games in any game, not any coaches!

Huh....

Reads defense could tackle

Reads offense was relentless, innovative

Delaney puts a prime read option quarterback into a sluggish run first and again offense, JJ would throw for 4k yards in a Read - Lee scheme

What about "Is Delaney the next Lou Reed"?

Yes he is the next Lou Reed in more ways than Griz fans can appreciate.

We've had worse QB play and still ended up in the playoffs. In 2005 we went 8-4 with a combination of Washington and freshman Bergquist (whose efficiency rating btw was lower than McKinney's and SSH's).

There were games last year where our offense actually looked pretty damn good in the first half, yet we would get a little too worried about making mistakes late in the game, or would have a major WTF moment in coaching (many times defensively) which would make our chances of winning much less likely.

We win a couple of those games we probably should have won and we are in the playoffs. We led in the UND game in the 4 quarter, yet lost giving up record numbers to UND's offense.

We led by 2 scores and had the ball with 8 mins to go in the game against EWU yet still found a way to lose. Delaney even mentioned he had the wrong guy lined up opposite of Kaufmann on the onside kick. We also wasted a very much needed timeout in that game when we called for 2 timeouts before a 25 yard field goal on 4th and 1.

We don't fall for the most obvious fake punt in the history of the world while at the same time lining up 5 yards away from the line of scrimmage on a 4th and 2 and maybe we pull out that win against SUU instead of allowing them to eat up the rest of the clock giving us very little time to try to tie it.

We maybe not try running SSH like he's McKinney in the Griz/Cat game or even better yet since we ran ALL over the cats the previous year put McKinney in to at least try it again and maybe we actually beat the Cats last year.

Win two of those close games and yeah we likely wouldn't have done shit in the playoffs, but at least we would have been there! Can you honestly say that you think we would have lost those above games with Pflu or Hauck's coaching staffs?

With Hauck especially we found ways to win even in games when we got dominated statistically. Under Delaney last year we found ways to lose.

Anyway, it's a new year, we are 8-2 & playoffs look like they are almost guaranteed! Not quite ready to anoint Delaney as the 2nd coming of Coach Read though :P

Potomac Griz pointed out just a few of the coaching blunders. But in general, most of the time, we did not make good half time adjustments and I feel many of the players were put in fail situations due to coaching. I talked with several parents of senior players from last year and you will not find one that will tell you that team should not have been in the playoffs. They were appalled when RE got up a the banquet and talked about how proud he was of MD and the team's accomplishment from last year. They all knew something much better should have been achieved because of the quality of the kids on that team.

Well, they are both very "grandfatherly"!
True, now they are, but that wasn't the case in 1986.
The only relevant stat between these two coaches, at this time, is that Micky-D was nearly 20 years older than Papa-Bear when each were in their first year at UM.
Papa-Bear retired at an age nearly 10 years younger than Micky-D was when he "retired," i mean got "hired," i mean both.

Don Read stayed retired less time than Mick Delaney before going back to work. Both as interim athletic director at UM to clean up another mess and also as co-offensive coordinator at NAU. (I forget the order) Unless things have changed he is still part time at OSU doing film scouting and game planning, after all he's only 84.

Clearly you under-estimate the man. Next year he'll be called up by the floundering Dolphins and in a year and a half he'll be christened the next Vince Lombardi. Heck, they'll probably rename the Superbowl trophy after him. Hell they should just do it now and stop wasting time.
