Is Delaney the next Don Read?

Like App St?

App State is 2-8.

Before we start comparing Delaney to coaches that actually made it to the playoffs and won in the playoffs we might want to win a game against a team with a winning record vs d1 opponents. We haven't even done that yet.

We are 0-6 against teams with winning records against D1 opponents under Delaney.
Hauck was 8-5 in his first 2 years here (Including playoffs).
Pflu was 5-5 in his 2 years here (Including playoffs).

Until we start beating high quality teams it's way off base to be comparing him to coaches that did.

Speaking of ex-Griz coaches, has anybody noticed how Bob Cole (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach) is doing at Northern Illinois this season?

The Huskies are 9-0, with wins over Iowa and Eastern Illinois. They average 44 points/game. His quarterback last year, Jordan Lynch, was 7th in Heisman voting.

The guy has 25 years of coaching experience, and he's only 54. (Of course, he smoked ike a chimney when he was here, so I don't know about his longevity.)

If we're looking for somebody to succeed Delaney, I'd love to see us go after somebody like Cole. (Yeah, I know, he probably makes far more as a coordinator than we could ever pay him as a head coach.)

Anyway, I think he was one of the best offensive coordinators we've ever had.
Bob Cole wanted to be both OC and head coach in late 2002 when he expressed interest in the Griz head job. That was a non starter for Wayne Hogan.

I agree AWF. I believe the Griz were near the top in offense in FCS in 99 with Cole as OC and Drew Miller at QB. I was hoping Hogan was going to hire him after Glenn left.

Delaney scrapped the spread offense and put in a very versatile pro set so we could be balanced on offense. It is a ball control offense, the same way Reads air bear was a ball control offense he used short passes like runs to dominate the other team. This year is no fluke when Mick can improve the way he did from last year. It looks like he is really building a dynasty like when Read was here.
I don't think that having almost 10 minuets per game less TOP is what I would consider a "ball control offense". That is exactly the problem, JJ was recruited for the spread offense and has had to readjust.
I would add however that it has been refreshing to see or not see our guys in the crime blotter Sunday mornings so if he is responsible for that then he should get coach of the year.

Well I think we got something sweeter than yoowho with Delaney. My money is on Mick hanging some flags real soon.

I am not a betting person, but I will make a wager with you. If the Griz hang a NC banner this year, I will run around downtown Missoula drooling and wearing nothing but depends with Go Cats written on the butt. And you have to do the same if they don't win the NC.

I do believe the Griz have the players to go all the way. I think they had at least a playoff team last year. I just don't feel we have the coaching. I would love to be proven wrong.

Mick is a nice guy, and more important he is from Butte America, was a considerable position coach for way longer than he should have been, however he has a long time, and time is not his friend, at this point in his life, to become a head coach of merit to be compared to anybody.

The long and short is, Mick, could not even ware Don Read's headphones. Oops Read didn't ware any, he coached Sunday till Saturday, than the athletes played on Sat.

Delaney has forgot more about football than this whole board put together. Post nice things or don't post at all.

Don Read's overall coaching record: 154–127–1
With Montana: 85–36
In Conference: 54–22

Delaney's overall coaching record: 18–19–1
With Montana: 13–8
In Conference: 7-7

More importantly, where were the Griz at before each of those coaches took over?

Before Read
The 10 years before Read we had a combined record of 41-63-1 with 1 playoff appearance and 1 season where we finished above .500

Read
With 10 years of Read we went to the playoffs 5 times, winning the NC once, and had an 8-4 record in the playoffs and a 85–36 over all record. Every season we finished above .500.

Before Delaney
The 10 years before Delaney we were 109-27 with 9 Conference championships. 9 Playoff appearances (14-9 record) and all 10 years with a winning record.

Delaney
So far we are 13-8 under Delaney with 0 conference championships, 0 playoff appearances, and 1 winning record in 2 seasons. We have an over all record of 13-8. Hopefully we'll have a playoff appearance this year too (which is looking likely).

Don't really see how one can compare the two coaches right now for many reasons. The program Delaney took over was in MUCH better shape than the one Read took over and had a much better history of winning & playoff appearances.

Sounds like Mick is a nice guy, and hopefully his coaching career here will turn out to be a very successful one. It's a little early though considering we haven't even made the playoffs yet under Delaney to start "dynasty" talk.

Quit sugar coating it stubbins. Tell us how you really feel   Honestly, I could not agree more with you. Thank God we have phenomenal athletes who keep winning games for us. Mediocre coaching, but we still keep winning. I will take the W's and hope MD decides to gracefully retire after this year. If the Griz make the playoffs he can claim success and ride off into the sunset and play golf. He has to be tired at his age. Stress is a bitch for a young man/coach. If he is not stressed - then we have a completely different problem!

What about "Is Delaney the next Lou Reed"?

Mick, I think everyone here appreciates what you've done for the program.

That might be true but this forum doesn't coach the Griz. I have no concern about how much Mick has forgotten. I am more interested in what he remembers. It doesn't appear to be enough.
