For those of us who grew up in Montana, distance isn't a big deal, it's just what you do sometimes to get where you need to go. As such, you've got people piling into their vehicles from all over the State to attend games in Missoula and Bozeman. Granted, urban driving is more stressful, but I have a neighbor who lives, bleeds and breathes Mariner baseball, yet he won't go downtown to a game because "it's too much hassle." For those people from Sidney, Glendive, etc who drive hundreds of miles each way for a Grizzly or Bobcat game, it's not a hassle, it's just part of the experience.
So true...between traffic and finding parking it can take just as long to go 10 miles in the city as it does to go from Polson to Missoula, especially if it is a large event or rush hour.
I live on the other side of the Columbia from Portland and I find there is very little that is worth the hassel of crossing the bridge. However, if I have a 3 day weekend I think nothing of driving 9.5 hours to Missoula to watch the Griz.

Meh. It's far more than that. That's simply the excuse that poor drawing teams hide behind. There are many successful and well-attended FCS programs in areas with FBS and pro teams.
I will say that having FBS and pro teams nearby does have some impact, but using that as a reason for poor attendance is little more than an excuse to prevent a program from doing the hard work necessary to create a fan base like Montana's.
Frat boy - you have a point, but I think it depends on the region. In Colorado, college football outside of CU, isn't a big deal. CSU doesn't get big numbers, Air Force does decent, but not great. It's a cultural thing. In Montana, you guys love Griz football, drinking and driving, hunting and fishing (In no particular order).
Actually there is an order of what Montanas love. The rankings are as follows:
#1- Griz Football
#1- Drinking (driving handled by a sober friend, of course.)
#1- Hunting (before drinking, of course.)
#1- Fishing (while drinking, of course.)
The Holy Grail is when you can do them all in the same day; the new lights will help with that!
GO GRIZ!!!

Good for us shitty for them too bad...not that we care all that much though. Wish I could have made it to the spring game but the cows needed to get worked.
Exactly.

McNeese State
Youngstown State
UMass
Jackson State
FAMU
Hell, even these teams out-draw just about eveyone in the BSC without a "Montana" in their title:
Liberty
SC State
Norfolk State
Tenn State
NCA&T
(I could go on)
Yes, having FBS and pro teams impacts attendance. But to use that excuse to justify terrible attendance is a crutch, and it's been used far too long by teams in the BSC. Those teams COULD draw if they took the steps necessary to do so.

EWU has nowhere near 25k students, more like 12k plus. We averaged right around 9k in attendance in 2011, which is closer to 75% (not the 26% you referenced above) and 103% of stadium capacity. Without bringing in temporary seating for certain games, we actually don't have any room for improvement attendance wise until the expansion happens.

Nope, the band wasn't there. And my thoughts are the same as yours -- it would have been great if it had been present.Ursa Major said:Slightly off topic but I was wondering if the band was at the scrimmage? I have been watching some FBS Spring scrimmage games on tv (i.e. withdrawal symptoms) and the band is a great addition. Puts one in gameday mode.

Old or new Dornblazer?? I have heard stories of 10,000 plus at old Dornblazer.
