Slightly off topic but I was wondering if the band was at the scrimmage? I have been watching some FBS Spring scrimmage games on tv (i.e. withdrawal symptoms) and the band is a great addition. Puts one in gameday mode.
Nope, the band wasn't there. And my thoughts are the same as yours -- it would have been great if it had been present.

I wonder if the opportunity had been offered?

IMO, it probably didn't happen because assembling 130+ band members, reissuing uniforms & instruments, & relearning a show is a huge logistical nightmare.

I think a lot of it has to do with what is around, we have nothing for quite a ways and most of the other teams have major fbs colleges and even NFL teams around them so the fan base is not going to be the same. Good for us shitty for them too bad...not that we care all that much though. Wish I could have made it to the spring game but the cows needed to get worked.

Exactly.

Meh. It's far more than that. That's simply the excuse that poor drawing teams hide behind. There are many successful and well-attended FCS programs in areas with FBS and pro teams.

I will say that having FBS and pro teams nearby does have some impact, but using that as a reason for
poor attendance is little more than an excuse to prevent a program from doing the hard work necessary to create a fan base like Montana's.
Name 4

USC, Washington, Georgia and Texas.

Edit: just noted the question was name four FCS teams in areas with pro teams. I failed miserably to read the question and will get no credit on this one.

I don't believe that UNC attracts an average of 7392 fans to their games. I know when the Griz are there there might be 7000 people in the stadium, but that's gonna be as good as it gets. I do recall reading the box score of a UNC NAU matchup a few years ago and the attendance was shown as 792. It was a cold rainy day in November and I have no reason to doubt 792 as actual attendance. 7392 seems way high to me.

I'm actually pretty sure that there was only one game in the Kittens litter box were at least 8000 actual people were in the stands after half time last year! Of that almost 8000, at least 6587 of those were Griz fans on that wonderful November afternoon!

Montana scrimmage sets FCS spring attendance mark

Missoula, MT (Sports Network) - The University of Montana's spring football game last Saturday set a Football Championship Subdivision attendance record with 8,731 fans, the Big Sky Conference school announced Wednesday.

The 92-play scrimmage was played under the new lights at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The Grizzly Scholarship Association raised about $50,000 through the scrimmage, with all of the proceeds going toward UM's Athletic Facility Improvement Project.
Hadn't heard this before, or seen it posted ... so here it is. Pretty neat :thumb:

EWU has nowhere near 25k students, more like 12k plus. We averaged right around 9k in attendance in 2011, which is closer to 75% (not the 26% you referenced above) and 103% of stadium capacity. Without bringing in temporary seating for certain games, we actually don't have any room for improvement attendance wise until the expansion happens.

Yer right about the enrollment, my bad. I amended my original post. Still, yer just ahead of unc in attendance...that's nothing to brag about.

Well, no one's bragging...just pointing out that we don't really have any room to improve in the realm of attendance, because we were at 103% capacity in 2011. And actually, we aren't just ahead of UNC. Here are the 2011 attendance figures (regular season) for all Big Sky schools (figures from espn.com):

Montana - 25,661
Montana State - 17,522
Sacramento State - 9,553
Eastern Washington - 8,903
Weber State - 8,487
Idaho State - 7,512
Northern Arizona - 6,277
Portland State - 5,947
Northern Colorado - 4,686

Once it goes into the funding phase, they plan on completion by 2014.

Good, I hope they get it built sooner rather than later, although in reality it appears they're a long way off.

the EWU athletic department is looking at installing a new scoreboard

This was the best news in the entire article, though. I hope they install one that is, you know, actually visible from the temporary bleachers they bring in for the Montana game....
