How do we stack up??

Wasn't there close to 8k a few years ago in Billings? The game in Wa-Griz should have had 15k. :fuel:

Another factor that helps the Montana schools is distance. For those of us who grew up in Montana, distance isn't a big deal, it's just what you do sometimes to get where you need to go. As such, you've got people piling into their vehicles from all over the State to attend games in Missoula and Bozeman. Granted, urban driving is more stressful, but I have a neighbor who lives, bleeds and breathes Mariner baseball, yet he won't go downtown to a game because "it's too much hassle." For those people from Sidney, Glendive, etc who drive hundreds of miles each way for a Grizzly or Bobcat game, it's not a hassle, it's just part of the experience.

So true...between traffic and finding parking it can take just as long to go 10 miles in the city as it does to go from Polson to Missoula, especially if it is a large event or rush hour.

I live on the other side of the Columbia from Portland and I find there is very little that is worth the hassel of crossing the bridge. However, if I have a 3 day weekend I think nothing of driving 9.5 hours to Missoula to watch the Griz.

But you'll make that drive across the bridge with the Griz are in town to play PSU, won't you?

;)

Meh. It's far more than that. That's simply the excuse that poor drawing teams hide behind. There are many successful and well-attended FCS programs in areas with FBS and pro teams.

I will say that having FBS and pro teams nearby does have some impact, but using that as a reason for poor attendance is little more than an excuse to prevent a program from doing the hard work necessary to create a fan base like Montana's.

Frat boy - you have a point, but I think it depends on the region. In Colorado, college football outside of CU, isn't a big deal. CSU doesn't get big numbers, Air Force does decent, but not great. It's a cultural thing. In Montana, you guys love Griz football, drinking and driving, hunting and fishing (In no particular order).

Actually there is an order of what Montanas love. The rankings are as follows:
#1- Griz Football
#1- Drinking (driving handled by a sober friend, of course.)
#1- Hunting (before drinking, of course.)
#1- Fishing (while drinking, of course.)

The Holy Grail is when you can do them all in the same day; the new lights will help with that!

GO GRIZ!!!

Doesn't Missoula lead the nation in DUI fatalities per capita? I don't think they're a lot of sober friends driving drunks around.

I think a lot of it has to do with what is around, we have nothing for quite a ways and most of the other teams have major fbs colleges and even NFL teams around them so the fan base is not going to be the same. Good for us shitty for them too bad...not that we care all that much though. Wish I could have made it to the spring game but the cows needed to get worked.

Exactly.

Let me see if I can try this (all drives are less than 2 hrs...which is general "area")....

Georgia State (Atlanta area)
Appalachian State (Charlotte area)
Delaware (New York or Washington DC area)
James Madison (Washington DC)

Barely put any time into it....stretch it to 3 hrs and add

Jackson State (New Orleans)
Old Dominion (Washington, DC)
Richmond (Washington, DC)
Georgia Southern (Atlanta)

And just imagine if we went to 8 hrs or 10 hrs, which is where many of our fans come from.....you'd have a HUGE list. These schools are not only competing with pro teams, but also many BCS schools in these areas.

Youngstown State draws pretty well and is not that far from Ohio State and think Pittsburgh and West Virginia are fairly close as well. Not to mention the Browns in Cleveland. But look at the big picture, out of what, about 120 FCS teams...I'd guess only 15 or so consistently draw 12,000 or more.

Digger beat me to it, but you could certainly add the following to his list:

McNeese State
Youngstown State
UMass
Jackson State
FAMU

Hell, even these teams out-draw just about eveyone in the BSC without a "Montana" in their title:

Liberty
SC State
Norfolk State
Tenn State
NCA&T
(I could go on)

Yes, having FBS and pro teams impacts attendance. But to use that excuse to justify terrible attendance is a crutch, and it's been used far too long by teams in the BSC. Those teams COULD draw if they took the steps necessary to do so.

Who'd have thought that UNC would be #3 by a good margain?!?!?

and just for a little fodder come September 8th:

2010 home average attendance-----------enrollment --------------attendance / enrollment %
25715 = Appalchian State==============20222--------------------127%

EWU has nowhere near 25k students, more like 12k plus. We averaged right around 9k in attendance in 2011, which is closer to 75% (not the 26% you referenced above) and 103% of stadium capacity. Without bringing in temporary seating for certain games, we actually don't have any room for improvement attendance wise until the expansion happens.

Yer right about the enrollment, my bad. I amended my original post. Still, yer just ahead of unc in attendance...that's nothing to brag about. Not to mention that god awful red turf, YUCK!

And I'll save you some typing: YES, I know...you have a more recent NC than us!
None the less- GO GRIZ!!!!

Slightly off topic but I was wondering if the band was at the scrimmage? I have been watching some FBS Spring scrimmage games on tv (i.e. withdrawal symptoms) and the band is a great addition. Puts one in gameday mode.

Lack of success, and lack ot tradition go into it a lot, for instance, Weber is a hoops school, always has been and always will be.

Weber Football has 3 BSC championships (and the last one was 40 years apart), Weber hoops has 19.

Also, the state of Utah, with the exception of the UoU is a basketball state.

I wish Weber had more support in football, there is nothing I would love more than to go to a Weber football game and have 18,000 wild and crazy fans there, but until Weber can continually make the playoffs (start with scheduling only one FBS team) and win some BSC championships along the way, than there will be no change.

Nope, the band wasn't there. And my thoughts are the same as yours -- it would have been great if it had been present.

That depends on whose coaching era you're talking about. Swarthout's teams of '69 and '70 probably pulled 10,000+. Carlson's and Donovan's teams....not so much.
