How do we shut down Chambers/Mellott?

Like others have said, there is no real shutdown. More on the lines of control. The Griz have to make them become more one dimensional. If you can force them into throwing the ball, we have a chance. If you can make them run side to side for minimal gain we have a chance. Besides SDSU I think we are the only legitimate team that can stop these guys. For this game, no 3 man fronts at all. We need 4-5 man fronts all day. Contain the LOS and they will have a tough day. I think we should use Wilson as a spy. The kid is fast and very aggressive. Over pursuing the ball will kill us and we will pay for it on the score board. This is not the Griz team of the past couple years but we are gonna need all hands on deck for this game. I’m nervous as hell for this game but it will be exciting! WA-GRIZ is gonna be absolutely rocking!

Griz held Sac State to 149 yards rushing, much of that in garbage time. They held PSU to 93 yards, well under their season rushing average. This is not the rush D of any recent year. Scats will be tough. No doubt the toughest test of the year but I know the Griz will be ready. Bigger question to me is whether the Scats will be able to stop the Griz offense….
We match up well with MSDUI. Strong rushing D will force them to throw the ball more than they're comfortable doing. We need to clean up the stupid penalties; I like our chances. MSDUI defense is not daunting.

I thought we matched up well last season too and look how that turned out

I have no earthly idea how this Griz team stops the run game of literally everyone BUT the Cats. Hopefully the staff looks carefully at the debacle from last season and tweaks the defense, because that was terrible
That was one bad game in a different season and stadium, so grow a pair. This is 2023, the Brawl is in Missoula again and the Griz machine is rolling.

Grow a pair? And what are you talking about? It was not just “one game”! Look at the rushing average for the cats in the last five games dude! It’s like 300 or more per game! With those kinds of numbers is it any wonder Griz have lost 4 of the last 5? Or is it 5 of 6? Either way, not great numbers and predictably bad end results. Rushing yards allowed are one of Haucks most important metrics for success, and cats have DOMINATED the Griz on the ground the last 4 out of 5 games

I think overconfidence is what got us in trouble last year. We came off beating two very bad EWU and Cal Poly teams and that gave us a complete false confidence. This year our preparation is 10 fold better since NAU, and we have beat opponents originally picked against us. Not to mention destroying Sac St. We will be very well prepared for this game as we have been since After NAU. There is more on the line this year than last. We are going for a freaking Conference Title, and a 2nd place seed. When is the last time we can say that?

I don't think the UM defense matches up well with the Bubs offense. We will see if they prove me wrong.

I don’t think so either. Until proven otherwise, the 3-3-5 has been ineffective against the cats rushing offense, and that’s putting it politely. I’m hoping that the new defensive wrinkles will help, but as they say, you can wish in one hand and s**t in the other and see which gets filled first.

Given our 3-3-5 defense, it seems shutting down the Cat's dynamic duo is going to be very difficult. We do not want to get into a shoot-out with them. I don't believe that is a game we can win.

Do we assign Riley Wilson as a spy on either QB? He is fast and strong. Just not sure that is enough.

Thoughts?

Here's what YOU do. Don't get too drunk. Don't blow off the third quarter. Stay until the end. Scream your lungs out.

What did Idaho do against the scats?
Replicate that!

The griz will have to hope dowler drops a TD pass... Then hope the cats miss a chip shot fg at the end of the game....

It happened once already so not a stretch to believe something similar can happen again, not that it will need to happen. Griz are going to take care of business. Bank on it.

Ya don’t. Just hope they make mistakes.

Your mother must have run out of string, otherwise you'd be over on eCat with a pork chop tied around your neck trying to make friends.

Where was UM ranked on rush defense coming into the MSU game last year? I recall it being very high, maybe around 70-80 yards a game? I agree the MSU defense isn’t great, but they’re better than last years…

Yeah PSU was averaging a lot of rushing yards too.. they didn't fare very well. This year's griz rush D is a lot better than last year.

By what metric is this years rush defense better than last years? Since the rushing defense stats are all so similar are you basing this just off your gut feeling? Eye test? Statistically the Griz defense is excellent against the run, and has been for several years, but that has not stopped MSU from running all over this defense in 3 of the last 4 meetings.

…. Pretty sure UM was the top BSC rushing defense last year too… they usually do well until they play the cats.

They aren’t changing their entire defensive philosophy/approach for one game. They will be in a 3-3-5 just like always…I believe the difference this year is that Bradford has them much more disciplined, not as reckless as in years past.
