How do we shut down Chambers/Mellott?

Yeah PSU was averaging a lot of rushing yards too.. they didn't fare very well. This year's griz rush D is a lot better than last year.

…. Pretty sure UM was the top BSC rushing defense last year too… they usually do well until they play the cats.

They usually do VERY well after playing the bubs too.

How many title appearances will it be after we beat sdsu in frisco? I've lost count. A shirt ton though.

How many years since you’ve made a title appearance? I’ve lost count too….A shirt ton though

Yeah NDSU didn’t do anything on the ground last year after MSU dominated dUMb on CGD.

Oh wow so now you’re going to make it all the way and beat SDSU now? How the turn tables…! How about you try and win your first conference title in over a decade then we can talk getting past the quarters!

Usually? How well did the cats do last time in Missoula? About 96 yards as I recall.

Tommy put it pretty matter-of-fact last year. Griz were undisciplined and not gap sound and they knew they could take advantage.

You’re right. MSU stubbed their toe in 1 game of the last 6 against dUMb, It happens. I would argue recent history shows UM is overwhelmed with MSU’s run game.

2022: 439
2021: 96
2019: 382
2018: 229
2017: 322
2016: 370

UM’s rush defense going into the game/ after

2022: #1 dropped to #5 …it was that bad of a fall after Cat/gris
2021: #1 stayed #1 after C/g
2019: #1 dropped to #2 after C/g
2018: finished #3 after C/g
2017: dropped to #6 after C/g
2016: you get the point, this was a long time ago… UM dropped after C/g

I'm going to go a different route than some. Don't worry too much about slow drives, just get a lead. Then, when the Cats are on the field, light them up. Mellott is an absolute class act, and a credit to the state of Montana. He is also soft, and I know for a fact he doesn't like getting hit. He is over it, we just have to push him over the edge. Don't be dirty, but make sure that if he carries the ball he goes to the ground hard. Mellot will break just like McKay did. That's my prediction.

I really enjoy anyone that posts using the past as a predictor of the future for college football. If that was valid, after 16 straight losses the cats would never have beaten the Griz again. Anyone who has any experience knows that strings beg to be broken. Doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the case this time but it will happen and don’t be too shocked if this is the year. The coaches have the D more schematically sound this year. Will be fun to watch.

Just trying to speak the gris language. History seems to be a big deal over here… I don’t think the scheme has changed much at all for this game. I bet they chalk last year up to us “we need to tackle better”. I think Tim and the boys sit on their hands and have googly eyes post game trying to explain how they thought Andersen would be back for another!

Even though the base defensive is the same, schematically the Griz defense is much different and more complex. With Tim and Ronnie having so much NFL experience, they have been able to attack teams differently than blitzing 8 dudes every play like we became accustomed to. Where the 3-3-5 has been exposed so much in the past is right up the seam. This was not only the case in the pass game but also the run, last year in the litter box is exhibit A. This problem seems to have been rectified in a big way. Not saying you can completely contain that offense as they attack you in so many different ways, but the physicality being played with, combined with some schematic improvements, we have seen, I think this Griz team could cause some problems for the cat offense.

Good analysis as I was wondering what exactly changes were made. It does seem like your defense does send blitz packages more than most, but have disguised packages to confuse offenses.

Griz defense is playing great. I really think either Montana or Montana State could be ANYONE in the country if they play their best football.

So many interesting matchups with this one... going to be a long week.

Not a bad write up, I could see some truth to this.

See, the "scheme" hasn't changed, you are correct (to a degree)...what HAS changed is the "not gap sound and undisciplined" aspect...but hey, you do you, bro.

Robbie Hauk was one of the Cats MVP's last year. Must have missed 10-12 tackles and of course the typically BS personal foul. Grizzlies will be better defensively for this reason alone.
