High School B-ball

golfinggriz, have you got a chance to see capital yet this year. I've been surprised by some of the losses i've seen in the paper, dont they still have wilson and others back from last year, I expected them to be pretty good this year

I actually haven't seen capital play, but i expected them to be better than the results thus far. With Wilson, and O'Connell they should be fine. HHS was dealt a hard blow last night by losing to Class A Dillion by 12. I'd expect Capital to have another year of being the better b-ball team in Helena.

Good start for the local AA teams this past week.
Big Sky beat the preseason #3 from the east Bozeman, Hellgate beat the preseason #2 from the east Great Falls High and Sentinel beat a very good team in class A Corvallis.
The real test should be coming next weekend when all three teams travel to Billings for two games each.
It looks like Hellgate might be better than previously thought, they dont have much size but it looks like Sampson has them playing a stile that fits.
The Bozeman win was a big one for Big Sky. They proved to themselves and everyone else they are contenders.
The win over Corvallis was a good start for Sentinel as well. Corvallis has the ability to compete with almost all of the teams in AA so its a good win for the Spartans.

Looks like the Missoula schools still have a ways to go after the weekend in Billings, 1-1, 0-2, 0-2. Will be interesting to see how things progress throughout the season...

Just watched Kalispell beat Helena High 53-24. Kalispell's freshman sensation Osweiler lived up to his billing for me. I can't believe how advanced and mature he is. He's a BIG TIME prospect, probably way past the Big Sky. His hands are good, he's got a nice soft around the basket and posts up real strong underneath. You would probably think he was a senior if you saw him for the first time. I'm a little in awe to be honest. And with Darren Engellent being his personal "big man" coach, the sky is most definately the limit. very impressive.

Just an FYI, Brock took in the Zags game last Saturday night in Spokane and met Coach Few. Also received a letter from some guy named Lute Olson this week...

Swilly, put away the pipe and come to grips with the fact that this kid has ALREADY wiped the Big Sky blips off his radar; neither he nor his family have any ties/affiliations with UM which would be the only sliver of a chance you'd have of landing him.

loyal, what did you think of Geoff Hogan?

Hogan has always been a nice player and seems to have improved his range on his jump shot this year, probably in anticipation of Brock joining the crew. Hogans has great hands and nice moves around the hoop. I don't think he's a Big Sky player, but definately would be a nice get for a Frontier school with continued improvement. I see him being too small in the end to play the post at the DI level and I don't know if he could defend the perimeter well enough. He needs to improve his strength considerably, but he's very solid...............and still only a junior. I was impressed with Kalispell, but was suprised they didn't push the ball and press more than they did. The bigger lineup may have changed their philosphy a bit, which I would suggest might be good.

Well, the 13 points Helena had through 3 quarters may have had something to do with the Braves not pushing or pressing much.

The Braves put a very nice press on Lake City in game 1 and outscored them 28-13 in the 4th quarter; they are very athletic for a tall team and good athletes make for a good pressing team.

I think this Flathead squad has to be considered a contender at this point.

No offense to J. DeHerrera, but if they had a TRUE point guard, I'd make them the favorite to take home the hardware.

I didn't travel to the game; is Helena High really that bad?

Helena high is very inexperienced and at times has three, four sophomores on the court. They will struggle all year, just don't have enough good players at this point in their career to compete night in night out. I think Kalispell is good, but I don't feel like they can compete with the top two or three teams on a consistent basis. Their guard play is pretty inconsistent and I'm not sure they are real deep without a decent drop off in play. Much better than I thought they would be though.

I've now been able to watch three Helena High games and this is easily the worst they've been in atleast twenty years. Having a winless season is a possibility this year. They only have seven more home games, and they won't win outside of Helena because they haven't done that since the State tourney in 04

You can't have two or three college players every year!!!

Well.... Talking about letting it rain. Looks like two of the Bison did just that against Sentinal tonight. Howard had 33 and this number 5 for the bison came off the bench with 24. Tatarka looked to have a struggle but the thing i was impressed about was that garland was held to 12 points. I am assuming Howard guarded him. I thought that he couldn't play Defense. That is pretty good for someone who can't D up.

Garland got in foul trouble early in the game on some questionable calls and ended up playing sparingly throughout the night, Sentinel had a shot to win the game but couldn't pull through, Great Falls is usually pretty tough in there own gym though, That Howard looks like a real player, it'll be fun to see where he goes from here

Thought I'd drag this thread back to the top.
Upset of the year at the Class C State Boys Tourney.
Whitewater goes down to Park City, 49-48.
Earlier in the day, Heart Butte battled back from 21 down to defeat Highwood for the second time in as many weeks.
