Haslam: BK deserves a longer contract

2 yrs minimum. That gives him and his staff just a bit of stability and a chance to plan and succeed.
It also means he gets a regular season home game against the scats. All of Griz Nation knows how important it is to win the Brawl. We need to start our improvement by holding home field in that game and work on getting better from there.

The real Athletic Director was Bobby Hauck.
Bobby Kennedy should have to PROVE that he and his staff deserve a longer contract. The Griz are about three months away from the start of that proof, and about three and a half to four months from that point to show the world he/they are better than 13-2. Then the long term contract. Trust what BK says, but VERIFY. Very Reaganesque!

Giving BK a two-year contract offers that stability which means that they will be more likely to stay rather than bolting at the first opportunity.

I think we should also consider the impact on recruiting. Remember Lamson bolted from Bowling Green because of a coaching change.

Yes that was another point that Haslam made in the article. He was very concerned about the possibility of losing half the roster. Instead BK rallied the troops and got everybody to stay. It was darn impressive.

He said that this will be his last job no matter what, so not sure what you're talking about here.

I just don't think it's too much to ask for him to at least get through a couple games before we even think about an extension.

The entire staff signed up for this when they agreed to stay/join, and a lot of them might retire if we move on, anyways, so I don't see that as much of an issue.

There's always a chance you're gonna lose players after a season, even if the coach sticks around. Hell, we lost more this last year than I think any other year under Hauck in the NIL era. I've kind of already just assumed we'll probably lose at least Ah Yat and Davis after this season, even if BK gets extended.

BK did a great job keeping guys in the 2nd transfer window, but I think any good coach we found should be able to keep a lot of them, too, and if not, that's why you go get a guy that can handle it and build the program even without them.

I understand Kent's probably in a bit of a pinch here because I'd assume BK is feeling some pressure to present better stability when talking to staff, players, and recruits. So how do you balance it? It's worth pointing out too that Kent in this article doesn't say an extension is for sure happening, it's something he'd like to see.

Ideally (for me) would be some sort of shorter extension with some triggers based on success (on and off field) for a longer extension - all while there's an easy out / buy-out if things turn into a hot mess.

Lots of coaches say it is their last job - until a giant check and opportunity are floated their way. Nothing against BK. Money talks. I respect your opinion on the contract. Completely understand why people think that way. I just have a different opinion.

Putting aside the fact that he's said that to a lot of people and I don't take him as the type of guy who would say that and not mean it, the only way he gets that type of offer is if we win a NC, and if we do, I don't care if he leaves in 2 years.

Mick Delaney gets more hate on here than I sometimes think is deserved. 2012 sucked but he was handed a shit sandwich thanks to Royce Engstrom. His teams didn't quite meet the standard of what we strive for but he did go 2-1 vs MSU and in 13 and 14 got the Griz to the playoffs. Neither year was super exceptional but he held down the fort and handed off a pretty solid roster to Stitt in 2015 as well.

The risks for not signing a contract extension before the season:
1. Griz and BK over perform expectations and $ amount for BK goes up significantly.
2. BK moves on to another program guaranteeing more stability.
2. BK loses out on the special teams coach he wants to bring in because of lack of head coach stability.

The risks for signing a contract extension before the season:
1. Griz and BK under perform expectations and Griz are locked into a contract with a buyout.

If I were the Griz AD, based on BK's performance up until now, I would extend BK to three years with contract incentives that incentivizes football program improvement and growth with a contract buyout that favors Montana for year one and is even for year two.
 
I say give BK at least two if not three years to help with player retention, assistant coach's retention, and recruiting. Given his pedigree and off-field success this far, are we taking a risk ? Sure we would be--just look at The LG and Coach Harris thus far : ( . And having not been a head coach before, Coach K will probably make a few--very few--bonehead mistakes given that he will a long-time, assistant and veteran OC in BP and a former HC in Phen in his ear on game day and before at practices. I just think the pluses out way the minuses in giving him at least a 2 year deal and adds some badly needed stability--we don't need an extreme case of musical chairs @ UM among coaches and players and stability for our program starts with our HC. !!! ( And Coach Delaney did a tremendous job given the s__t show he inherited from Engstrom !!! About 3-4 years ago I met Mick's great-niece managing the Downtown Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Billings and told her, her great uncle was/is a good man and coach and really pulled our program out of a mess and restored stability during his three-year tenure 👍 !!! )
