Haslam: BK deserves a longer contract

I am still of the opinion that he needs to earn it. We have been down this path before.

Mick Delaney was a great dude too and he stepped in after Pflugrad was fired in 2012 and we gave him a 3-year contract right off the bat. All he did was keep the program from crashing and he didn't do anything to elevate it.

I don't want Montana to make the same "mistake". Make Bobby earn a contract extension. If he has a great year, then offer a longer-term contract.

I agree with this, with a huge BUT...if there is some very early success on the field, it would be OK to sign him in October.

I think a 2 year deal make more sense than a 1 year deal even with the lack of head coaching. You can still get out if it is a failure but extend if not.
I agree. One of the reasons that Haslam gives in the article, besides the fact that BK has been doing a good job recruiting etc, is that Haslam wants some stability for the assistant coaches. Giving BK a two-year contract offers that stability which means that they will be more likely to stay rather than bolting at the first opportunity.

I agree partially - the math has changed quite a bit transfer portal wise when UM hired Dennehy. I'm in the give him one more year after this (so initially, this year, then next year) and if everything goes gangbusters this coming season, you could tack on another year or 2.

I want to see BK coach a game first - maybe work through part of a season before this kicks in as well - but I can also see how some sort of extension can help keep things stable. I lean more to liking this than not liking it but I can understand others concerns too.

Mick Delaney gets more hate on here than I sometimes think is deserved. 2012 sucked but he was handed a shit sandwich thanks to Royce Engstrom. His teams didn't quite meet the standard of what we strive for but he did go 2-1 vs MSU and in 13 and 14 got the Griz to the playoffs. Neither year was super exceptional but he held down the fort and handed off a pretty solid roster to Stitt in 2015 as well.

Feedback far and wide is that BK's work within athletics, across campus, around the state, and even in our recruiting regions has been awesome. It's been reflected top to bottom not just from BK himself but his staff as well.

I understand Kent's probably in a bit of a pinch here because I'd assume BK is feeling some pressure to present better stability when talking to staff, players, and recruits. So how do you balance it? It's worth pointing out too that Kent in this article doesn't say an extension is for sure happening, it's something he'd like to see.

Ideally (for me) would be some sort of shorter extension with some triggers based on success (on and off field) for a longer extension - all while there's an easy out / buy-out if things turn into a hot mess.

I realize this might be a hot take -

But, Kent is most certainly in a pinch. He's got a new President...who will have new expectations.

What's his grade overall for Athletics at UM? Debatable - for sure, but not an A.

Honestly, Kent would be wise to see some results. Why in the world would he go on record with this? He'd be wiser to retain all the leverage.

Not smart.

I agree. Delaney had his faults, but given the climate, I think he did a hell of a job of stabilizing what he could and to keep the ship from sinking. It could have been a whole lot worse those couple of years. Who would have wanted that job at that time and could have done much more?

BK is doing everything he can, and everything he is asked. We need to see how he handles summer workouts and fall camp and get some games under his belt. I like his work so far, but his fingerprints aren’t on the program yet. All the players have high praise from what I’ve seen. He’s very accessible and willing to get out and be the face of the program and interface with the media. It’s a breath of fresh air. If he can have the success on the field to go with that, then he will get what he deserves.

Success this season is what a lot of you want from BK before he can be allowed a new or extended contract. Personally I think a lot of you are wrong. First the players he has now are Bobby's and other coaches recruits. Several of these recruits that were here and did not win a natty last season. According to most of you BK should make the team a national champion without the majority of the new recruits coming under his watch. It appears BK is trying very hard to make it work and with the continued support of the University it should make it easier. What else could you ask of him? To ask more at this point is just being selfish.

Yeah, Bobby left the cupboard bare.

Love BK. Dude is doing great things this offseason.

But he's never been a head coach before. Never even been a coordinator.

I need to see him actually coach this team in real games before I just give him an extension.

He has infused more energy and positivity into the program than Hauck did in his entire second stint as HC. Sometimes you need new energy and vision. BK has it. Recruits and players love the dude and he needs a long term contract to solidify what he is doing to attract and retain players/coaches. UM needs to put their big boy pants on and ink a longer term deal. If he bombs after two years - buy him out like other institutions would. He won’t bomb by the way. Neither U of M, nor MSU would in the current environment. It’s now a league of about four schools. Two of them are in Montana. It just best your rival and go deep in the playoffs year after year. That the world he is operating in now. The bigger threat is him leaving after two years. He will have head coaching experience, success and a lot of suitors. Haslam has a tough gig. He has to start preparing for the next head coach right now. BK is probably going to be a short term HC because of his success and credentials

You just described most new head coaches situations. Especially with NIL. Veggie at MSU was an exception. BK will do just fine. He has the most critical position covered. QB. Defense is the bigger issue, but Bobby’s Swiss cheese defense shouldn’t be tough to follow. Even with that defense, Griz were one of the top four teams in the country. This year’s defense will be better. Scheme alone is a huge factor and the players are largely in place. Staff is actually solid on the defensive side of the ball. Good as the Cat’s? Hard to tell, but iike the odds at this point.

So far BK has passed every test when it comes to running a Football program in the offseason. The recruiting has been great, the PR and fan engagement has been great, the fundraising, etc. that said, I still need to see him win some games before I believe it. He clearly didn’t have an issue signing a 1 year deal initially that let’s just keep it that way for this season. If he proves he can win at an elite level, then absolutely he deserves a long term deal. I gotta see his on field success before I’m a true believer.

I understand the concerns about no HC experience; he has yet win a game etc. The program needs some stability now and a one year deal is not exactly stability for the staff or for recruits. I say give him 2 or 3 years vs. just one and that keeps the staff stable and likely keeps BK from moving on quickly
