Gunnar Brekke Gatorade POY

The hard part is losing the head-to-head battle for the quote-un-quote best senior in Montana. It's signifigant in that regard. It's like when people questioned the signing of Gustafson because he wasn't necessarily a fit for the Oregon offense. IMO, it doesn't matter. You have to go after and sign the Gatorade Montana Player of the Year regardless of the schemes you run. And while the Griz didn't get Trod that year, they got Brady (runner-up) and Kidder the next. Cat fans tried to say they didn't want both Brady and Kidder AFTER they inked with UM. While the fans may not have, Ash wanted both and offered both accordingly. Now the shoe is on the other foot. The Cats got the top senior in the state this season, and the GRIZ and Delaney sure as hell wanted him.

As for a Brekke being a running back, that part doesn't hurt as much in the short-term IMO. Canada has two more years, The Marshall transfer is in Missoula to start winter semester classes, Counts is the real deal in ANY offense and John Nuygen won't redshirt. I think in that regard, the Griz will be just fine without Brekke at that position. Never-the-less, it's a huge loss for the Griz BECAUSE he's the Gatorade Player of the Year and I don't care what Cat fans say, or what system either school runs, BOTH schools want every one of em'. And the Cats got this one. Hats off to Ash for the recruiting job they must have done because the kid verballed all the way last spring, and MSU never gave up on him apparently.

Spot on!

I think Brekke's best position is slot receiver but I could see the Cats wasting him at RB.

If it makes you Griz fans feel any better....the RB from Billings Senior is still uncomitted. Saraceni is bigger than Brekke....faster...[he finished 1st in AA 100meter.....I believe Brekke took 3rd] Two coaches that have seen him that I know (I haven't seen him play) have said he is a better....who knows???
He did play for a team that got a lot less ink than Brekke's....(that's just about everyone, though  )

I think if Delaney or Ash drove down I-15 out of LA and threw a dead cat out the window it would hit a dozen 5'10 180 l.b. running backs.....this is not intended for smack against the Brekke kid at all...but there are a lot of tough, fast, quick players in CA & AZ. Hell.....the RB from NAU was overlooked by just about everybody...and he was far and away the best back in the BSC!!! I am all for signing home grown talent when it actually exists....but it's a #'s game.....and they favor CA, AZ, and TX. This will probably offend fans from the CATS & GRIZ but coaches would rather win football games than PR contests of who has the most Montana players.!!!!

No one can dispute that the Cats did both over their Griz last year. Congrats to them. It will make the coming years all that more interesting!

I think the Griz would have been better off, if they did sign Brekke in the near future, to have had him at the Safety position instead of RB.

Excellent post Teton! I think Brekke is a great talent. He did so many things well at Capital. I think he translates better to the slot or defensive backfield at the next level, but they said that about Chase Reynolds as well. Time will tell. I hope he has a healthy and productive career regardless of where he goes. I have had many people that have watched a lot of AA ball that Saraceni out of Senior tranlates better to the next level due to his speed. AA 100 and 200 champion as a Junior last year. Might have had more press this year, but had a shoulder injury and missed the last few games this year. Brekke wins in the change of direction game. He can stop on a dime and give you 9 cents change, but Saraceni has a better chance of outrunning the defensive backs when he breaks one. Heard someone liken him to Lex.

I tend to think he would have ended up at Safety at UM also.

There is another very good Safety at Big Sky in Missoula (Baker). However, from what I have heard, the Griz are sticking to the old "Missoula kids should walk on, and be happy to do so" with him.

Lets rationalize some more. The kids not a 4 or 5 star player being recruited by big time programs. He's a good, solid Montana player, and that means something in this state. He gave a verbal to UM, now he changes his mind and now gives a verbal to MSU? That tells me something about his character, which also means something in this state. Perhaps it is true that Boise State is recruiting him. Maybe he'll give them his next verbal. Still a long time til signing day.

weak posting. are you questioning j.p. kanongata'a's character, too? a lot more players have backed out of m.s.u. commits and come here than have backed out with us and gone there.

This. These are 18-year-old kids, for gawd's sake. They change their minds a million times a day. The fact that Brekke has now verbaled to MSU is really too bad for UM, but it says absolutely nothing about the young man's character.

Yup..Total BS move to call out Brekke's character and quite frankly, that's what I've been talking about. That is a Cat Poster move. Not all Cat fans do it, but a select few posters have done it, including with kanongata. They ripped his character on BN. Not gonna do it here. I do not know Brekke personally, but I can tell you this decision has nothing to do with character. It's his life and his right to decide where in the hell he wants to go school and play football, and that includes changing his mind from one school to the other.

Agreed. Wish the kid the well but both programs are solid at RB and will be for sometime. IMO this would be much worse if the kid was a QB as that is what the Griz need to focus on right now.

So. Much. Rational. Posting. Brain. Can't. Comprehend.

Weird isn't it? It reminds me of A Christmas Carol. It is like all egrizzers were visited by 3 ghosts over christmas and turned over a new leaf.

Just give it a couple months. Now that no football is being played it seems like the majority of the..."fans"...quit posting for a while until the games start up again. Just wait for it.

Brekke is a really good player, and good kid. Wherever he goes the program and fans will be getting a good one. No doubt about it.

I enjoyed watching him (and silently cheering for him because he was a Griz verbal) when Capital came to Butte this fall. He was fun to watch, definitly the best skill player on the field along with Butte QB Dallas Cook and RB/CB Zach Bunney. Brekke and Bunney are both Shrine game selections, Cook was only a Junior and thus not eligible this season.

Griz recruiting is going very well... :D
