I am amazed at everything it took for Gfeller's game tying 3 to even happen. Unbelievable hustle and awareness by Gregory on the 1st miss to keep it alive. That is exactly why coaches preach to never watch a play and to always know where your man is. UNC needed to keep a body on him, and they didn't.
The awareness of Breunig to not secure that ball, and quickly do an accurate tap pass to Breunig to get the shot off with so very little time is also amazing.
Finally, the awareness of Gfeller to be in position to get that shot. Many teams would of had everyone going to get the ball in that situation and would have found no shooter in position. Again, that is something great coaches tell a team. We need to make sure 1 or 2 of our best shooters are in position to shoot the ball if we keep the ball alive!!!
That whole possession was the perfect storm for the GRIZ, and worse storm for UNC. We have all seen game winning or game tying shots, but this one was beyond the normal. To add even further to it, mental breakdowns were the main reason why the GRIZ let UNC back into this game. In this possession, mental thinking and awareness were perfect by/from Gregory, Breunig, and Gfeller. This whole possession just defies the odds. The events leading to plays like that are few and far between in basketball.
Moments likes this often allow a team to take their game to a new level. This could be the "We have arrived" moment for this year's GRIZ team, and possibly DeCuire's coaching career. As for me, I will never forget this game or this play. It's a great day to be a GRIZ!!!!
