Griz :vs: Duquesne game thread

Thanks BQ for a great career! Griz were about 2 steps slow all night and the Dukes could shoot the ball from outside where Montana has struggled all season.

Guys, your Brian Qvale is a special player. It must have been fun watching him the past four years.

You have some young quick guards and that helped you out against a style that it sounded like you haven't seen much of in the Big Sky.

I hope we see you someday in the Big Dance!

Try none. We saw NO ONE that quick this year and the Griz played all over the west coast. Loved watching the Dukes play, they really are an unselfish team that can find and attack the holes in most defenses. I hope you guys win this whole thing.
UM did ok in the second half. Not having a major go to guy next year might actually help the Griz develop a more complete game. The half court is ok if you have a Qvale and a perimeter shooter...next year, there won't be a big man, so we are going to have to pick it up. I hope Tinkle and the AD can schedule teams like Duquesne, Kent, Wichita so that come BSC tourney time, the Griz will be the fastest and best and most experienced. This wasn't necessarily a bad loss. Would have liked to have seen another outcome, but it is for next year. Congrats to Qvale..

Oh yeah, completely agree. I don't think it's a bad loss at all. I think the young guys now see what it is going to take to compete on the national level. Very glad that the Griz jumped into this tournament despite the outcome.

"Compete on the national level"??? This team was ranked no better than #96 in the nation! They did not even make the NIT! And you make them out to be some national power???? I think this game just shows how much distance there really is between a Mid-Major conference like The Sky, and the real basketball conferences in the country.

You guys are not gonna like hearing this, but from an old fart who has been an avid BB fan for many years, as well as a former NCAA basketball official who worked conferences much higher-ranked than the Big Sky, I will tell you that the disparity between the top 20-40 college basketball teams in the nation, and Montana is MUCH GREATER today than it was in the Heathcote/Brandenburg/Monte/Morrill days of old. In those days, there were several years where Montana would be ranked in the Top 40-60 teams nationally. Now, we can not crack the Top 100. Not being negative, just stating the facts.

The beauty of college basketball is that, while much of what you say is true, in one year, a team like Bucknell, or Gonzaga, or St. Mary's, can put a team together that can make it to the top 16 and beyond. It isn't easy. There is no reason Montana cannot do the same. We have some very big time talent now, but lots of questions for next year. So much depends upon style of play, injuries and confidence. Look at Notre Dame this year....they have vastly improved and they are a threat to win it all...that happened nearly overnight..a good coach, recruits, fan base, and schedule with set goals in mind can turn Montana into a real player's team. The second half tonight showed potential...not a downer, not by a long shot...and, I am usually pessimistic after Griz losses.

- all mentioned above making it to the Top 16 since 2005 in the NCAA Tournament.

I just wonder why a former NCAA official has to cite such disparity between teams as if his experience denotes expertise. O.K. All this and the fact that an official calling a game should be unbiased as well; makes me wonder just how unbiased, though. Anybody in hock over gambling debts?

How many of the teams coached by Heathcote, Brandenburg, Monte and Morrill made it to the NCAA Tournament? It looks like just 2... and one was in Morrill's last year here.

How many Griz teams since then have been to the tournament? 6...and we were VERY close this year too (still pissed about that game...). As others have pointed out, good mid major teams, when they make it to the tournament, do have a chance of making some waves in the tournament. If you don't make it to the tournament though, it never happens. So I'll take the 6 tournament appearances over 2 any day :)

This year was a down year for the Big Sky, sure... but your comment "now we can not crack the Top 100" is inaccurate. We were in the Top 100 for a good chunk of this season. We were in the top 100 last year. We were in the top 100 (61) Coach K's last year.

Look at the records over the past 8 years, and compare them to the records of the coaches you mentioned above. Before this year, only Monte and Taylor had two 20+ win season in a row. Tinkle has done that this year too...which is pretty damn impressive. I think the Griz are on the right track, and I really look forward to next year.

I thought Will 'The Mouth' Cherry was lights out from behind the arc? He running his mouth again on the flooor?

Who were the Cats playing this week? Oh right, they are at home playing with themselves again... like every year at tournament time.

Maybe if you guys had some players like Cherry, you'd have a shot of making a tournament every once in a while, and not going through the usual 2nd half of the season collapse :)

Your guys talk, too. They just talk about how shitty the fans are in Bozeman and how tough it is to recruit to that cow town!
