Griz @SDSU Game Thread...

Foul calls "evened out" :o  toward the end, finally at 24-18 ... but the imbalance kept SDSU in the game for a lot of the time. Just noticed in the ESPN play-by-play ... there were only two field goals scored in the last 2 min. of the game (both layups by the Jacks). All the other scoring was from the foul line.

Good win for the Griz against a pretty good (now 10-5) SDSU team.

Very nice win. As the ESPN+ crew said this is the type of road win over a very good mid major team that can bump a team from a 14 seed to a 13 or 12 at the end (if the Griz win the tournament and do very well in the Big Sky of course).

Wonder where the emo entourage is tonight... they seem oddly quiet.

Terrific defense+hustle+ heart+ solid offense= Terrific road W.
Nice games by Oguine, Akoh, Rorie, and Pridgett.
I honestly feel, if Falls goes back to a slightly higher release point, his perimeter game will return. I noticed it a few games this year. I don't recall him having a low release point last season. Fortunately, it's a very easy fix with the elbow and upward extension. He's extending way too far out, instead of up this season.

Great win! The Griz answered every run the Jacks made down the stretch. Griz got it done with three guys in foul trouble, too. What a great way to end the non conference. That could prove to be a big win later this season. Go Griz!

I didn't get to watch this live but am ready to queue up the replay. I will say, though, that I am super pumped and proud of the way this team obviously bounced back and served notice that we are the team we knew we could be! Kick-ass, Boys! Well done!

I assume the full post-game interview with coach DeCuire will be posted later tonight. It's good and very transparent/revealing about the struggles with Akoh out of the lineup. But I transcribed this brief clip, which to me says it all.

Travis DeCuire: "We were in a time-out… I said to Jamar, 'Hey man, you have to use your right hand.' He comes up right out of the time out… right hand jump hook… to me that was the dagger...

"The presence of Jamar changes everything about who we are."

Been down on you boys lately, but that was a “HUGE WIN TONIGHT” good team. Maybe saved a NCAA seed? We could have been a 15-16, and now a 15-13. Had we beat a AZ, GSU, or Creighton? I’m not happy, but our losses are all against good teams. Our RPI has been crazy to me as a Griz Fan this year. I watch daily, and “im like every loss we have had hasn’t sent us back much?” Coach had a great schedule this season, but not having Okah, and the spread between games set the players, and fans back? Coach D don’t have to pick his poison, it’s given to him! Proud of coach D!🔥 Go Griz

Terrific game and at the right time just before conference starts on the 29th. It’s amazing the impact Akoh has on how opposing teams play us and how aggressive we become offensively. Going into tonight’s game and after our last two showings I was less confident we could play with the Jackrabbits especially on their home floor.
I’m still confused as to why Travis went with Carter off the bench especially since Kelby played so well the other night around the rim. And what has happened with Mac Anderson the last few games
? I thought he had tremendous upside especially since they took him off his red shirt. Obviously Travis knows his players better than the fans.
A well done to all the players and coaches for an exciting game. It was a great game to watch too. I never felt the Griz would let them get back into the game. The Griz just wanted it more.

Is Kramer still trying to catch his breath from playing so much against Arizona? He played so well, by far his best showing of the year last game

If Akoh is healthy, he won't play much. He's tall and can affect/block a shot or 2 on defense, but scoring 2 pts (on 2 un-contested dunks) in 30 and 22 minutes (vs Arizona and Coll/Idaho) doesn't cut it in my book. He has no D1 offense skills whatsoever besides the occasional dunk. He's young and maybe he will develop some moves, but he has absolutely no low-post game at all, even against College of Idaho he was afraid to make a move. He's an emergency guy only right now.

Props to these announcers they have called a nice game, Im so sick of road announcers calling every made bucket by thier team like its a walk off shot

I agree. I thought the announcers were outstanding and totally fair, giving the Griz a lot of props and not whining about foul calls, etc.

Go back and watch Brian Quayle as a freshman, not a whole lot different than Kramer is now. Give him some time to develop and sitting on the bench is not going to improve his game. Ten minutes a game to spell Akoh will help him get there. You need to remember he just barely turned 18 and his upside is good. He is still growing into his body. He may never be another BQ but he has the frame to be a 8-12 pt. per game contributor.

So Dakota State home games this year:
So Dakota Mines
Grand Canyon
Alabama St
Bemidji State
Kansas City? (UMKC?)
Southern
Savannah St

last years non-conference home foes:
South Dakota Mines
UC-Irvine
Mary
Alabama St
Dakota State
Concordia (Neb)
North Dakota
Drake
Presentation

2015-16 non-conference home games:
South Dakota Mines
Wayne St (Neb)
Minnesota-Crookston
UMKC
Idaho
Murray State

so they haven;t exactly run the gauntlet to earn this long home winning-streak. We might be the best team they've played at home in 3 years.

I beg to differ to some degree, but you have a point. I think Qvale had more obvious skills immediately, but I have seen guys like Ryan Dick struggle as a frosh and develop into a quality player eventually. I keep hearing that Kramer is barely 18 years old but is a redshirt Frosh. There is no birthdate listed on any Griz site. What's his b-day? How is he only "barely 18" after redshirting last year?

I stand corrected. Kelby Kramer was born 8/99 which makes him 19 yrs and 4 months. Although he was a late developer, played tennis until he grew to big.

Qvale was 2nd in the Big Sky in blocks (frosh and soph yrs) and the Griz' 4th leading rebounder as a "true" frosh (2007-08),starting 8 games. He was born 11/3/1988 meaning he was 18/19 years old during his frosh season. You're not wrong that big guys sometimes develop later, but Qvale was pretty competent right from the start. Similar defensively, but Qvale always had some offensive moves, and I honestly think Kramer is ground-Zero offensively. Without Tinkle or Krysko teaching him post-moves, I don't know who we have on staff that can help develop him properly.

My thoughts while watching the game:

I liked the way that they were running screens with carter and akoh on the floor at the same time. Really worked well to free up lanes. I hope we see some more Carter/Akoh lineups to change things up this season.

Ben is really nimble for how solid that guy is and will be even better in the following seasons. I'm excited to see how he and Mack develop.

Timmy had some great plays down the stretch of the first half to keep us in the game when the Jacks went on a run. He may make some mistakes but there is a reason he's out there and he can be so electric.

The Jacks' Skyler can really get off the ground! He's fun to watch!

We really did everything well tonight that we have been terrible at the last few games; rebound, attacking the lane, free throws...

I expected their crowd to be more rowdy, but man, that stadium was crickets for large stretches.

Bobby showing exactly why he is on the floor a lot over the last 45 seconds in the first half... He really played well, including spurts of excellent D on Daum, all game.

I know the announcers said we weren't shooting very well in the first half, but, sh!t, 44% is a dream compared to the last few games...

Good God, the defense was stellar tonight. The trap was really strong all game.

The broadcast of this game was probably the best we have had all season. Announcers were good, you could really hear a lot of on court banter/coach talk, too, which I like.

Rorie's drive with 11:05 left in the game with 5 Jacks just watching him take the lane. Beauty.

Don't know about anyone else and why it was this way with this game, but I loved the way the rims sounded on made shots in this game. Yeah, weird comment.

I hope we continue to give more minutes to Manuel. He's earned it when he's in.

To do what we did in this game with the foul disparity we had was really amazing. We just made shots that didn't fall in the losses this year.
