Taking a break to post after this game has not helped much. I am not upset the GRIZ lost, but why they lost. This loss is going to eat away at me all year. There is not a lot to add from this game than from previous games.
Once again, defense was great. Portland's high 1st half FG%, for the most part was more unbelievable hot shooting than bad defense. It is frustrating when any team gets in that kind of zone. It is even more frustrating as a player and coach. I just wish it were the GRIZ in that zone. Speaking of shooting, it is most definitely this team's downfall to date this year, and verging on a major liability. It is the ONLY reason we lost to Portland. The bright side is, Tinkle and players have to know this. Meaning, it is nice to know your weakness is only one thing. In past years, there have been a few more things that needed worked on. I expected inconsistency this year, but figured it would be more of execution and dumb mistakes. I did not expect it to be bad FT and perimeter shooting.
Speaking of shooting, what can be done? The obvious is a lot of practice, but that is hard to do or it takes away from preparation for opponents, but it has to be done. I really do hope the players take it upon themselves to work on this when free time presents itself. Based on what I have seen so far this year and have heard, there are a few things I feel can help during the game.
(1) Play Jamar more. His shot is as consistent as anyone's we have seen to date so far. He is solid at every aspect of the game, and has a great attitude. Shooting aside, this kid is good and certainly ready for the minutes. I wonder why he is not on the court more? He is a difference maker.
(2) Commit 10 or more minutes per game to Chase Adams and/or Autry unless Wood finds his game. As of right now, we honestly do not know what Adams or Autry can do in meaningful game time. We have to find this out before conference play anyway, with Wood struggling, this makes even more sense now. As for Wood, how much longer can Tinkle stick with him in hopes to let him shoot his way out of the slump, and find his stroke? I can see he is a solid player, but has limited ceiling. Tinkle has a very tough decision here. The last option is Weisner losing a redshirt, but he is not a guard and SF is not our problem, guard depth is right now. We are set at SF with Jamar and Steward. There is another possibility out there, I will touch on it later.
(3) I am not sure if this will make much sense, considering what our weakness is and the player I am going to reference is not a perimeter player, but can impact it. Once huge positive from the Portland game was getting to see what Reader is capable of doing, and my concern of Ward not matching up too well in the paint with decent size. I was impressed with Reader prior to the Portland game, but I am now officially sold on his game and upside. He has nice touch in the paint. He has good footwork, and is athletic for a BSC big man. Yes, he is a freshman, and likely will struggle at times, but it is time to find him 10 plus minutes every game and build this kid. It helps his cause when he also appears ready defensively and a good rebounder too. The only way to do this is to take some minutes from Ward, and get creative with Selvig, Jamar, and Steward, if our current guard depth, other than Cherry does not prove itself.
It is too soon to do this now, but consider it, and even experiment with it at opportune times. I would experiment with Jamar/Steward at SG, Selvig at SF, Reader at PF, and Qvale at C. I think Selvig is capable of playing SF in limited minutes, but only with Qvale and Reader on the court. Selvig is too valuable helping with rebounding and high post passing to use him as a perimeter player. There is no dropoff with Reader on the boards, and Selvig is a good passer regardless of where he is at on the court. I just do not want to see Selvig turn into a perimeter hanging big man. That drove me crazy with Hasquet. We did not have the supporting cast to have him out there as often as we did. Either way, commit to building Reader. It will payoff immensely!
Another concern of mine is PG depth. Tinkle admitted in his postgame interview he is concerned of playing Cherry too often. The 2nd half of the Portland game showed me Cherry is approaching the wall he is about to hit from too many minutes. Cherry, without doubt is an impact game changing player. He had very little left in his tank. His legs and energy were gone. It showed in the final 10 minutes of the game. His quickness lost a step defensively, his shot was flatter, etc. Hell, even a few times Portland guards got by him on the ball. That very seldom happens unless the player is an elite guard. We are used to Will making impact plays all game. I do not recall any impact plays from him in the closing minutes, which is not his fault, but a sign he is out of gas from the minutes.
Wood, Adams, and Stockton are solid, but not much room for drastic improvement. Autry has the most potential, and very highly regarded. I would commit to him being the sole PG behind Cherry. Rather it be minutes at SG or PG, we have to see what he can do, just like we are with Reader. We are struggling at SG. Once again, another move that makes sense, hopefully sooner than later. It is time to debut the Cherry and Autry show.
It will be interesting to see what Tinkle decides to do in terms of personnel and minutes to improve this team. He has many options at hand, but I am sold the best options are building Reader and Autry now, and sacrifice some minutes with likes of Ward and Wood. As a fan, that is tough for me to suggest though, I really do like Ward, but he has to be used against the right matchups. Too bad he is not quick enough to see a few minutes at SF, now and then. He has a solid mid range perimeter game. The Ward situation is the exact reason why I do not want to see Weisner as post option. He has to good of a perimeter game to be a post.
AS for UCLA, I do not know what to expect, but do feel Cherry, Selvig, Qvale, and Jamar will have an opportunity to get noticed. Collectively this team will truly find out who and what they are. What a better time to test Autry than this? It was the Washington game last year that Cherry was tested and we seen glimpses of his potential. Here is to hoping we can see the same glimpses of Autry and Reader from this game. I hope to see 7 plus minutes for Autry this game.
As for the Portland game, build it on it. Shooting can only get better. (I hope).
