GRIZ/CAL game thread

UM shot 11-23 from the line. Gregory was 2-7. Breunig was 7-12. They each scored 23 points. Gregory had 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Breunig 5 rebounds. Dunn had 7 assists. Griz had 9 turnovers; Cal 22. Griz had 9 steals. Griz were down 6 at the half. Griz were 7-25 from 3.

Griz must have played great, except for the poor shooting from the line and 3. Cal's only loss is to Texas. Clobbered Syracuse.

I think EWU plays at Cal too. That will be kind of a barometer.

The EAGS play at Seattle, SanFrancisco and Cal. There will be three comparison games with the griz.

The only uncontested shot in basketball - the free throw... Same basic mechanics each time and nobody's hand is ever in your face. The Lady Griz were always better at the line than any of Tinkle's teams. Now DeCuire's guys seem to have have caught the same bug. It's a skill you can practice alone. In the gym. At the Y. On the playground. There flat out is no excuse for being a crappy free throw shooter. None...Period...

You can practice free throw shooting in an empty gym all you want. Even make every attempt. Doesn't always translate into makes in the pressure of a close game with a big crowd staring at you. Some coaches try to simulate the pressure in practice by making everyone run lines after a teammate miss. Other coaches try to take the pressure off a team in a shooting slump by never addressing it, not making a deal out of it "you gotta start making those throws!", and hoping it just works itself out on it's own.

I know with Tinkle's teams there was the same problem at the beginning of the season and it usually worked itself out. This year it seems more pronounced as it has cost us two big upsets. My guess is the same thing will happen.

FT's, 3 pt shooting, and rebounding all hurt the GRIZ. I loved the defense, effort, and heart. That defense creates a lot of turnovers. It was nice to see Breunig and Gregory each have great scoring and floor games (FT shooting killed both of them). I hope Dunn and Edmunds learned from Gregory the importance of taking the ball to the hole. I honestly am a little disappointed in Dunn not taking the ball to the hole more often. He is quick and strong enough to wreck havoc in the lane. Other than the 1st 7 minutes of the game, our 3 point shooting was terrible. Gregory, Weisner, 3feller, Edmunds are all capable of hitting close to 40% from 3. Amazing they are all struggling so far this season.

Here we were all worried about our defense coming together this season. Shocking enough, just the opposite, defense is great and shooting the ball is terrible. I never pictured this team struggling with inconsistent shooting.

Travis has to be very upset with terrible FT shooting. The offense will come. Defense has to be the staple no matter what every game.

Even though they were outrebounded, they did well on the offensive rebounds, and I thought they had some very big rebounds at opportune time. Well I don't see mentioned here is I think the lack of FG's down the stretch hurt every bit as much as the FTs

I think I saw a graphic after Weisner's 3 pointer in the 2nd half around the 8 minute mark in the 2nd half that the Grizzlies were shooting 59%, yet they finished at 42%. Here is another key moment, after Mario's layup at the 6:43 mark, they Grizzlies only scored one more FG (Gregory's lay up at 1 min mark) for the next 13 minutes of play....none in the first OT. Edmonds hit one at 3:42 in the 2nd OT.

Were they gassed?

Hung in with the bears, shoulda, coulda, woulda beat them.

Not shabby as Cal pounded Syracuse in NY a couple of weeks ago.

seems no matter how well we play we are haunted by a few bugaboos--poor free-throw shooting, weak rebounding, youthful inexperience leading to poor shot selection at critical times, turnovers late in winnable games. except for rebounding, there's one good cure--confidence. i believe when this team realizes how good they can be, they'll play much more confidently.

but i'm still jazzed, because this team can be very good.
--we've got two bona-fide stars, gregory and breuning.
--we've got four very good young players who will get better and better, dunn, gfeller, edmonds and krslovic.
--this team plays terrific defense. i watched the entire cal-syracuse game, and cal was getting long-range shots at will over that syracuse zone. against montana? no way. most of cal's shots were contested from anywhere on the court, and their 20-some-odd turnovers were in large part because of our defense. it's a joy to watch this team play defense, and that defense will keep us in most games.
--take away the first ten minutes of two games, and montana has played six very good halves out of eight, on the road, against four very good teams. and after the deflating end of regulation last night, when our kids had obviously blown a winnable game, they came right back and battled cal pretty even for another ten minutes, with a last-shot chance to win the game. very nice.
--i love this coaching staff. i loved that they went for the win at the end of the second overtime, and thought it genius that they set up edmonds for the last shot. if only we could sub in decuire to shoot free throws...
--finally. can we finally just hand those ugly maroon jerseys to goodwill? puh-lease??!! they looked great in the black last night, awful in maroon at usf.

No, they actually weren't.

Last year the Griz ranked #42 in men's basketball in FT% at 73.8%
Last year the Lady Griz ranked #90 in women's basketball in FT% at 72.0%

Last time I checked 73.8% is better than 72.0% from the line.

How about the year before that? Nope... Griz were #5 in the country at 76.7% and the Lady Griz were #79 at 71.9%

Hmm....how about the year before THAT one then... NOPE. Griz shot 71.6%, lady Griz 71.3%

You have to go back to the 2010-2011 season to find a season where the Lady Griz shot a better FT% than the men. So much for them "always" being better than Tinkle's teams :)
