GRIZ/CAL game thread

I don't want a quality loss. If Gregory even shoots close to his percentage from the FT line, we win without going to any OT. Not pinning it on him, we had plenty of other chances from others at the FT line. It just sucks being that close to a game we won in every other way.

All that aside. Their student crowd was great. Wish we had that. And their broadcast crew was fantastic.

That said, this was a character building loss. It's a loss, and I HATE it, especially since all we had to do was hit FTs to win. But this loss will pay dividends.

Take out the frustration on Davidson.
BINGO! Don't forget Cal is now 6-1 and this was the toughest game they have had besides the Texas game. They now know who the Grizzlies are.

No one does, Peaux. But you can't hang your head here. This is a teaching opportunity. It's still a loss, but the Griz will reap the benefits from their difficult schedule and the way they've played the tough games.

I hope I can make a couple games in Missoula this year. I really want to witness Breuning at home. At the very least I get to see them wipe out the cats on their own court.

Definitely true. Cal is very good... beat top 25 Syracuse by 14 at a neutral court.

Still fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!! One free throw in regulation...just one. 5-13 in the 2nd half would have been plenty but we were 4-13. Dammit!

Not a fan of "good losses" but what we did see today is that the Griz team can play high level competition and hang with them. Being one of the top teams (if not The top team) in the Big Sky is not out of the question with this team. The tough out of conference schedule will pay off I think. You don't get better beating up on everyone at home. Tough road losses, opportunities to learn, opportunities to see where you need improvement and all that can really pay off in conference.

FT's, 3 pt shooting, and rebounding all hurt the GRIZ. I loved the defense, effort, and heart. That defense creates a lot of turnovers. It was nice to see Breunig and Gregory each have great scoring and floor games (FT shooting killed both of them). I hope Dunn and Edmunds learned from Gregory the importance of taking the ball to the hole. I honestly am a little disappointed in Dunn not taking the ball to the hole more often. He is quick and strong enough to wreck havoc in the lane. Other than the 1st 7 minutes of the game, our 3 point shooting was terrible. Gregory, Weisner, 3feller, Edmunds are all capable of hitting close to 40% from 3. Amazing they are all struggling so far this season.

Here we were all worried about our defense coming together this season. Shocking enough, just the opposite, defense is great and shooting the ball is terrible. I never pictured this team struggling with inconsistent shooting.

Travis has to be very upset with terrible FT shooting. The offense will come. Defense has to be the staple no matter what every game.

UM shot 11-23 from the line. Gregory was 2-7. Breunig was 7-12. They each scored 23 points. Gregory had 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Breunig 5 rebounds. Dunn had 7 assists. Griz had 9 turnovers; Cal 22. Griz had 9 steals. Griz were down 6 at the half. Griz were 7-25 from 3.

Griz must have played great, except for the poor shooting from the line and 3. Cal's only loss is to Texas. Clobbered Syracuse.

Even though the Griz lost... I am very impressed with and PROUD of this team tonight. This was my first opportunity to see this team this year, and I am blown away by how much they have improved. This Grizzly basketball team is something to be excited about!!!

The conference is all that matters for the Big Sky...Eastern beat a mediocre Indiana at their court which is as tough as winning at Haas. It was close. Weber is going to have to start playing better...I think UM is very much a challenge for every Big Sky team IF they play the way we all know they can, and learn to close out. Free throws will come in time with practice and confidence.

I'm proud too.

I'll be honest, I almost didn't watch this game, because I kind of expected the kind of game we usually play against top teams from power conferences (e.g. a 32 point beatdown). But even the Cal announcers said after the game that the GRIZ outplayed Cal. It's not a win, but it's still something to build on and to be proud of.

The only uncontested shot in basketball - the free throw... Same basic mechanics each time and nobody's hand is ever in your face. The Lady Griz were always better at the line than any of Tinkle's teams. Now DeCuire's guys seem to have have caught the same bug. It's a skill you can practice alone. In the gym. At the Y. On the playground. There flat out is no excuse for being a crappy free throw shooter. None...Period...

An 88% FT shooter went 2-7.

It sucks. But let's not go all Silvertip and say that all the Griz players are crappy FT shooters.

Hope we take it out on NDSU first this Sunday :)

Should be a fun game. NDSU of course picked up a tournament win last year. They are 4-3 so far this year with losses to Southern Miss, Texas and Iowa. They beat the Cats in Bozeman 72-51.

True..but bottom line is you have to make the FT's....guess what the team is going to be doing next practice... :D

"Heart" is a core. They have it. Free throws can be fixed.

It's easy to say there is no excuse for missing free throws...especially for people who haven't been in a pressure situation like that. Most will never know what it's like. Often it's easier hitting a rhythm shot on the move during live play than a pressure free throw. That being said, it's true that they win & lose games. Gregory, Bruenig & Edmunds all missed crucial ft's. After losing such a big game like this because of missed ft's, the lasting pain they'll feel will more than likely make the chance of it happening again less likely. It's a tough lesson but going through it may pay big dividends as the season goes on & they get into crunch time end of game situations during conf play. I guarantee they won't appreciate that now or over the next couple weeks but that pain will make them better than never going through it.
