I don't know why I feel the need to engage in this conversation. This is merely stirring the pot for pot stirring sake.
First whether you want to throw Gregorak or Stitt under the bus, whatever.
Secondly, in my coaching career I have met a crap ton of former football players at many universities that have the understanding of football of a three year old. I don't know that it has much merit honestly. If that is the group that people run with, I'll take it with a grain of salt. Just one man's opinion.
Thirdly, offense and defense philosophy and who runs it is like our taste of politicians. The proof in their quality is a careful and objective observance of the issues at hand.
The fact of the matter is there are a lot of people who are going to gravitate to throwing Gregorak under the bus. You can complain about the choice not to play squat corner on the last drive, but his choice in my estimation was valid. Could have their been an alignment adjustment by the OLB's? Don't know, but I know they didn't want Brown attack the middle of the field with his feet. String it to the sideline seems, while it stops the clock doesn't allow for the 40 yard chunk he was capable of taking with his feet if the linebackers don't play inside out.
Moreover, I don't know how you allow vertical releases by receivers and hope the safety gets over the top of it. That is counter intuitive in that situation. Let the corners cover the vertical release. That comes with a draw back which is there isn't an extra edge contain guy there. Other parts of the game, those corners would have been willing to come off those routes to make the play. In this situation, not sure it was that easy.
Either you commit to forcing Cal-Poly to throw it and taking away the run, or you do the inverse with the knowledge that cal-poly doesn't have timeouts. In this situation, because of what Poly does, I don't think you can have it both ways.
You either force the 50 yard field goal or give up a quick and easy march down the field. Don't know that many coaches in that situation would have done much different. Maybe a few tactical adjustments here and there, but in my estimation really hard to criticize his deployment of the secondary there.
