GAME DAY THREAD - Butler

Lots to clean up in the passing game, for sure. That was disappointing. Nice to have McDowell to come in and give the defense a different look though. Gillman is going to be such a beast.

I don’t care how anyone wants to spin it, letting a non-scholarship program come into our house and play us to a 1 score game in the 4th quarter is a very bad sign. If we don’t improve substantially, Ferris State could embarrass us.

Is this the Return to Dominance we were looking for?

Typical first game. Butler is a good opponent and they’ll win games this year. Some sloppy play. Butlers QB is good. He doesn’t take sacks.

So pros. Gradney looks nice. Our linebackers look very very good. Looks like we have a kicker. And Clifton looks very beneficial for when Vidlak and the offense stalls. I loved the play calling when he was in. Similar offense to what the cats run. Our run game could be very good. OLine started Meh but improved when Clif came in. I really like having two different style QBs to rely on.

We look to be very athletic and skilled at RB and WR.

Over all good opening opponent to test us to start. They’re a veteran team.

First game. Calm down Nancy.

Kids first start and extended action, give him some slack

I get that. With experience comes wisdom or some other philosophical bs. But, with how much we’ve been hyping the guy, it was underwhelming. 180 yards with two INTs (agree one wasn’t his fault) and 1 TD is not very encouraging. It could be Butler is really good this year, but the Griz should have performed at a higher level. Some of our main conference foes have. Like Sac and Idaho.

What I AM encouraged by is McDowell and Gillman. If we can stay healthy, they should make a fun pair to watch. Running 230 on someone isn’t anything to sneeze at! Defensively, while Butler seemed to get a bunch of 50/50 balls (last 10 years, hasn’t it seemed more like 80/20?) and some rather impressive catches, they were held to about 304 yards total with 41 on the ground. Statistically it wasn’t a bad performance. It FEELS bad, but it isn’t.

Obviously lots to clean up, but there were some bright spots.

The Griz ended up with a pretty balanced attack: 221 pass, 230 rush ... actually it looks more like about 265 if you add up the individual numbers yourself. That's with -15 for Vidlak. Between them, Gillman and McDowell put up 199. FWIW: Vidlak completed 60% of his passed and threw for 180 yards.

The coaches obviously knew about their so-called dual-threat QB and set the defensive game plan for: "Make him beat us with is arm." Well, Bushka piled up 263 yards thru the air, but got only 3 on the ground. In fact, that's another bright spot ... Butler was held to just 41 yards rushing on 26 attempts. It's discouraging for us fans to see all those gains thru the air, but it worked ... despite all that, he could not beat us with arm.

Perfectly calm Karen. While I appreciate your ability to find a silver lining, it’s also ignorant of reality to not admit to yourself that this was a ridiculous performance against a team that we absolutely should dominate at any juncture, first game or not.

Greeks get upset easily!

And I think Vidlak had 100 of those yards on three big catch-and-run plays.

I think Vidlak played okay. The first int is t on him at all. The second was a bad decision all around. Ended up scrambling right into pressure then throwing back across his body. I do think if he leads the WR, it’s catch and run.

He stared down his guy way too much and he tried to force a lot. If McDowell can get the playbook down and improve his passing, we will be a lot better off with him.

I just have this feeling that last year's griz team would've hung half a hundred on them while giving up 7.

Maybe the qb did give issues because he was left handed. Score a point for Colter. Lol

You suck at trolling.

And all week the joke has been on Coulter (or, more accurately, the joke IS Coulter). Bushka is not now, nor has he ever been, left handed. Shows you the prep coulter put in.
