G5 presidents to meet about leaving Power 5 schools.

Heard today that next week G5 presidents were meeting to discuss separation from Power 5 schools. Anyone else heard anything more concrete?? Are they being preemptive knowing that the divide will get bigger and P5 schools do not want to share revenue and playoff spots?
What could this mean for FCS schools?

"MW teams currently get about $3.5 million per school annually with Boise State getting an additional $1.8 million. The power conferences have surpassed $60 million per school."

$3.5 million in the MW is not exactly a pot of gold. I assume lower in the other conferences.

"The new College Football Playoff revenue model is expected to pay the Group of 5 roughly $115 million per year, or $1.85 million per school. The Group of 5 conferences have 62 schools, not including two independents (UMass and UConn) and the remaining Pac-2 (Oregon State and Washington State)."

I suppose there's decent ncaa hoops tourney revenue too.

Thanks for article.

I wonder what the "never move up" posters' argument will be once there is a G5 playoff.

Sadly, it's probably too late for UM. Should have moved years ago.
I’m not sure that’s the case. There is still time as the G5 gets an auto bid for the CFP for the next 2 years, meaning that the new G5 playoff likely will not happen until the 2026 season. By then, we’ll know what the future of the PAC12 is with Wazzu and OSU. If they re-build it, that will open up all kinds of spots in the MWC. Conference re-alignment is never over my friend.

True, but much like the fbs now, why would G5 conferences want to add teams and split the pot even further?

Well Chicken Little, I would be all for moving up IF something actually solidifies. That’s a big if and hopefully the playoff at the G5 level does comes together. The NCAA screwed the pooch. Doesn’t mean Montana should have moved up. Where exactly would they be right now? Competing for the garbage bowl? No playoffs. Stands empty, when they were packed all last year. Would the TV revenue have made up for the sold tickets? How about the hotels, restaurants, bars and retail stores? Yeah, be careful what you ask for and “moving up” should be vetted throughly. Just because football fans want to play with the “big boys” that we already played against at one time, doesn’t mean we should. Especially when you consider increased scholarships and Title 9. Idaho didn’t do so well moving up. Not sure why everyone thinks Montana or Montana State would have.

Why would the stands be empty? Please don't tell me you do not believe 27,500 would show up to watch the GRIZ host Boise. Or Air Force. Or Colorado State.

Hell, we get 26500 there paying $75 to watch freakin noco. A ticket to the MECCA would be almost impossible to secure playing those teams.

A G5 playoff spot would probably not be something UM would get to, is one argument.

UM has never had anywhere to move, and has never had the money to move. So, there's that.

What conference?

Mountain West's average athletic budget must be up around $50 million. UM's is $25 million.

" Air Force ranks first at $76.5 million, followed by San Diego State at $65 million, UNLV at $64 million and Colorado State at $61 million.
  • Notably, Boise State ranks one spot below the Bulldogs, pulling in $50.5 million in revenue.
  • San Jose State is the lowest revenue grossing team in the conference at $39 million."

See the amounts of state funds the MW schools get? Do you think the Montana BOR is going to pony up that kind of money? Look like UM gets $7 million from the State. https://knightnewhousedata.org/fcs/university-montana

State/university money

1. Hawaii, $27,678,753

2. Colorado State, $22,262,693

3. Nevada, $20,505,326

4. Utah State, $19,833,536

5. Fresno State, $18,877,397

6. UNLV, $18,787,735

7. Wyoming, $18,723,995

8. San Diego State, $15,306,426

9. New Mexico, $14,950,688

10. San Jose State, $14,830,300

11. Boise State, $12,832,861

Average, $18,599,065

Median, $18,787,735

Mountain West student fees average over $5 million. Would UM and its students go for that? Looks like gets about $1 million of student fees now.
