Looking for a beer in Billings? Try Fiddlers Green. Owned by Kevin MacIntyre, uncle of former Griz linebacker Shane MacIntyre.

Enjoying a cold one there right now. I always stop in for lunch here when in Billings. Its good Griz bar with good grub. It's been open for 8-10 years now I guess. I just found it about three years ago.

Stopped there a lot when my son lived in Billings. Watched a couple road Griz games there, had a blast. Might have the best Pork Chop sandwich (definitely the biggest) on the planet. Love the mustard sauce!

Is there such a thing as a bad pork chop sandwich? Just sayin'....

There is actually. In Missoula. Was in Butte recently and seemed like there was a good pork chop sando on every other corner.

Anyone know where the hell to find a good one in Missoula??

Fiddlers is at 5104 Southgate Drive. Take the Cabelas exit, but turn west and its back by the motels. It's just seconds off the freeway. I like it cause I hate Billings and am only passing through. I don't want to take the time to go downtown.

Lemme tell you guys a true tale. I was stuck in Billing for work one cold night. Staying at the BW downtown. The Griz were playing a road playoff game. Billings' own Johnny Edwards was at QB. I thought I'd find a place to watch the game from where I could walk, just in case I had several brews. I found this downtown "Sports Bar" on Broadway called Hooligans. They did not have the game on. They did not know about the game. I asked the barkeep about it and he put it on one crappy TV. A bunch of guys were watching an SEC game on the big TVs. At the first break in the action I boogied back to my room. I hated Billings. Until I found Fiddlers.

Good story but Hooligans didn't open until 2005 . . . Edwards was long gone!

Falstad Column: Gigantic TVs, downtown sports bar

March 20, 2004 11:00 pm

Jan Falstad HAVE YOU HEARD

The three partners who started the Montana Brewing Co. - Dan Konen, Mike Schmechel and Dru Cederberg - are planning a sports bar within dribbling distance of the Brew Pub.

Schmechel says the partnership has negotiated the basic lease for 3,300 square feet at 109 N. Broadway that used to house Casey's Golden Pheasant and most recently Chin Chin Japanese Cuisine.

The business will be called Hooligans Sports Bar.

"We're intending to put in a high-end sports bar, something we haven't seen in Billings, with a 20- by 30-foot video wall, plus a dozen 60-inch plasma screens," he says.

The cost of the electronics alone is about $175,000.

The Montana Brewing Company, nicknamed The Brew Pub, has a casino called Barleys to the south. Hooligans would be next door to Barleys.

In order to bring in new customers and not dilute the Brew Pub's clientele, Hooligans will have a separate kitchen, menu and staff. State and city approval to use the liquor license already has been granted, Schmechel says.

The menu will be similar to Moose's Saloon in Kalispell, he says.

There's a meeting Monday to hammer out the last details of the lease.

"It is designated as an historic building. We want to make sure the stairwell doesn't impact on the use of our space," he says.

Hooligan's today is very much a GRIZ bar--most of the current owners are GRIZ alum. And come Saturdays in the fall, The GRIZ game is playing on the largest big screen in Montana, not to mention the smaller TV's.

If you're downtown this fall, stop at Hooligan's--the biggest and best sports bar downtown. They also serve the award-winning beer from their sister restaurant next door, The Montana Brewing Company, if you love microbrews.

Kevin and Bill MacIntyre are class guys and brothers from Butte !!! Kevin used to own and operate Billings first downtown sports bar in the 90's, The Billings Club. When Walker's Grill, one of Billings' best fine restaurants, bought his building, he built Fiddler's Green out on Southgate Drive, Both Pug's and Fiddler's serve great Butte food--huge pork chop sandwiches and beef pasties, and the soup doesn't come out of a can.

Marketing in your background pardner? You can write copy for me any day.

The Dinosaur. In the back of Charlie B's.

Thanks for the kind words, bigdog !!!

Kevin and Bill--or "Mac" as we call him, a friend, and I went to Bobby Hauck's first home game in 2003 vs. The Bison, who at that time were Div. II, soon to move up to Div. 1-AA.

We were ahead something like 24-3 at half and ended up losing the game 25-24--that sucked !!! We did have great seats in the brand new North End Zone, but man that sucked !!!
We were also at Joe Glenn's first home game against Hofstra in 2000, and amidst raging forest fires burning in the area and 2.500-3,000 soldiers from Fort Hood on firefighting duty watching the game, we lost something like 10-9.

Hopefully, Coach Stitt will have better luck against The Bison come Aug. 29. Maybe, I should stay home--I think I am bad luck for new GRIZ HC's first home game !!!

Careful not to wear a carnation on your Stitt Happens shirt that day. You're likely to be run over crossing the foot bridge.

My bad. You are right. It was called Jakes. At the time it was recommended as having a good steak. I never very found out. It was like being in Iowa looking for a Griz game.

Yes, you need to stay the hell away from Missoula and only watch Griz games on TV. :ugeek:

The guys that own Montana Brewery and Hooligans in Billings just opened a place in Missoula called the Thomas Meagher Bar. Anybody in Missoula tried it yet.

Went there last weekend. They did a great job renovating it, much more spacious and open than SK's. Pretty good food as well.

No there isn't. The Wop Chop at the Freeway Tavern is hard to beat. Fiddlers Green is fantastic, but the wow factor comes from the sheer size of the thing. I can eat with the best of em, but couldn't finish the whole thing. My son could polish the whole thing off, but didn't need to eat for 6 weeks after lol. He loved Fiddlers Green because its like being home in Butte. Havent had a pasty there but he said they are top notch!

Jake's is on the same city block as Hooligan's, corner of 27th and 1st Ave N. Not really a sports bar. So how does the pork chop sandwich at Fiddler's or Pug Mahone's compare to the one at the Freeway Tavern?
