FCS Football Budgets

They currently have about 6,100 more students than we do, and even if you're conservative and consider them in-state students that spend $10k to the university every year, that's $61,000,000.

The real number is probably larger than that, and that doesn't even touch the massive difference in fundraising they have over us.
I know nothing about UM’s football budget or fundraising; but if what I’m hearing about MSU’s fundraising going into this season and next is correct, the gap might get bigger. Money raising around the state this spring has been unprecedented.

Not enough to account for a $

This is how BSU started to pull away from Idaho, it started with a small gap that surprised people just like this, BSU had a more experienced President and a better AD Dept that positioned them selves with a vision. MSU has a vision, a athletic master plan that was updated in 2025 which donors are excited about.

People on here said I was nuts to even suggest a world where MSU moves up to FBS (or whatever that new level becomes) without us, but I don’t think it’s a crazy suggestion. There is a growing faction of your fan base and admin that see the growing divide and aren’t gonna give a shit about us if the move is available and makes sense for you.

Except it can’t happen. Couldn’t happen back when UM was in the drivers seat and being courted by an FBS conference.

This guy is usually kind of a troll on Twitter, but if he’s right about this, then it could explain the difference.
We can't know unless MSU releases an itemization, but as HHB mentioned, things like the scoreboard and practice facility are usually not in the football operating budget. It would make more sense that they are in the general athletic department's budget, and are probably amortized across multiple years.

I guess I’d like to know more about what happened with the Football budgets in just one year and what Haslam’s plan is to rectify that. How did ours fall so behind them in one year and what’s the plan to get it even with them again? I can tell you this, new president Shinn will not be stagnant like Bodnar was.
Could it be as simple as better fund raising, donors/sponsors with deeper pockets and a AD Dept with a clear and public vision. It easier to fundraise when you a have a detailed plan and goals that the public knows about.

I would assume the bouncy house maybe cus its used by other sports but the scoreboard is solely for the football stadium so it should fall under the football budget.

Exactly, not sure why the AD Dept and some of the fan base think this, is this us writing some where both schools need to move up together. this is how Boise State started and eventually pulled away from U of I, the BOR started to favor BSU as they began brining in more money.

I have no inside information, but I think MSU is just ramping up and making themselves ready for when they’re able to move up.

It won’t be allowed by the Regents. And I call BS on any significant financial gap developing.

If they continue towards a $15M+ annual football budget, and we can't keep pace, we are going to get left behind. The only way we don't is if this somehow forces our admin to just bite the bullet and take whatever move up we can get, even if we can't/can hardly afford it.

And what's BS about the gap?
I've already shown they have tens to possibly a hundred million dollars more gross revenue from students each year than we do that has been there for nearly a decade now, and their millionaire+ donor base is much larger, growing faster, and more engaged in fundraising than ours is. Wealthy people are continuing to move to Bozeman and becoming engaged cat donors.

The work BK and the AD are doing now is encouraging, but unless it's way more than I've heard, it's still not catching up to the neighbors.
