FCS Football Budgets

If they continue towards a $15M+ annual football budget, and we can't keep pace, we are going to get left behind. The only way we don't is if this somehow forces our admin to just bite the bullet and take whatever move up we can get, even if we can't/can hardly afford it.

And what's BS about the gap?
I've already shown they have tens to possibly a hundred million dollars more gross revenue from students each year than we do that has been there for nearly a decade now, and their millionaire+ donor base is much larger, growing faster, and more engaged in fundraising than ours is. Wealthy people are continuing to move to Bozeman and becoming engaged cat donors.

The work BK and the AD are doing now is encouraging, but unless it's way more than I've heard, it's still not catching up to the neighbors.
Show us the line items for that budget. Show us what caused the budget to supposedly jump one year. I’m in Antalya, Turkey and have to hang out on the Mediterranean today.

No one knows what's in the increase exactly until MSU decides to release it, but I already posted my suspicions on what caused it on the first page of this thread.

Where did the total come from?

I assume MSU didn’t increase student athletic fees, so the increase didn’t come from that.

A deep playoff run increases revenue, but also increases expenses.

Donations can increase. Probably did.

When the foundation moves in a bunch of money to pay for a completed building project, that’s a one-time large increase in revenue.

If MSU keeps growing and we keep stagnating, the BOR is not going to hold them back for our sake. Money talks, and just because our admin refused to push back on them doesn't mean theirs won't.

Sorry, but no. There is not a snowballs chance one gets the nod versus the other. It just won’t happen. I always laugh when people act like a trajectory is static in nature. It ebbs and flows. Economic circumstances, AI, education in general, athletics and NIL. The world will look completely different in five years. MSU is having their moment. Good for them. It won’t last forever. U of M shot themselves in the foot with Dennison being at the top of the funnel near the end of his career. He did nothing to prepare the university for the next step. The. Walks in Rolls Royce who just piled up the car right into a telephone pole. Bodner did a decent job stabilizing and someone new needs to figure out how the crystal ball works. Donors. Need more of them and big ones. MSU has them and U of M relied on one family for far too long. Time to giddy up and the new president likely had the chops for the job.

People have been saying "this is MSU's moment and won't last" since like 2015, and all they've done is continue to grow.

I hope you're right, but I've been watching this for the last 10 years, and I don't think my eyes are lying to me about what's happening, and that's not even getting into all the shit I keep hearing from my bobcat donor friends.

And what exactly are they telling you?

I know NDSU is no longer FCS but I think it's relevant to this thread. I was told by a person who is in the know in NDSU athletics that they had to go to the MW to sustain revenues. I was told NDSU athletics is funded entirely by donors and donors were getting tapped out. NDSU had to go to the MW in football so they could sustain their athletic programs. I'm cross-posting this to the MW thread.

Oh, I get the frustration. No question that we all want it to change right now. The same could have been said for MSU 16 straight losses in row. Then something changed, including the town of Bozeman. More change will happen and the momentum Bozeman has will slow down. Boise is not a young Cinderella anymore. They have some problems and it’s going to be interesting to see how things morph in the next ten years. We are in one of the fastest moving times for technology. What it means for universities is a giant question mark at this point. Donors don’t and can’t five forever. We all think in terms of our life span. I would like to see the new President provide a 3, 5, 10 and 25 year vision. It may get blown to shreds quickly. At least there would be a road map. Waded was an excellent leader. She knew how to raise money and rally donors. She also understood the importance if the sports programs.

It comes down to donors and who is in charge of securing the funds. If it's the athletic director then there is the answer. I can tell you for a fact that a larger donor was denied because the program did not want to work with them.

Oh BS. You are clueless. I am telling you that for a fact. Can you name one major donor other than the Washington family.

Ah, yes, the famous and common situation where a "larger donor" has his money rejected by a University. Happens all the time. Very realistic.

Are u fking kidding me? You have the facts backwards.
The facts are that the UM has more generated revenue or self funding and MSU has more institutional or subsidized funding currently and certainly in the past history of these programs.
But that does seem to be changing with the expansion of MSU and the Bozeman community.

The AD and his Dept is fully in charge of fund raising, securing current and new avenues of revenue. Will be interesting to see what Learfield finds for Jersey Patches, another big opportunity for revenue.
