FCS Football Budgets

This is always puzzling. If you count Suck Stat-- now leaving-- 7-10 of these teams are from west of the Mississippi while the vast number of the FCS conferences are east of the Mississippi. Maybe reflective of the many other sports (Lacrosse, hockey) back east that are there to fund. And Stony Brook is even more of a head scratcher, but most likely driven by all the wealthy alums who are from Long Island who still think the Seawolves (what is a Seawolf?) are competitive.

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing. Where is all that extra money coming from for MSU? Seems kind of sketchy.
They currently have about 6,100 more students than we do, and even if you're conservative and consider them in-state students that spend $10k to the university every year, that's $61,000,000.

The real number is probably larger than that, and that doesn't even touch the massive difference in fundraising they have over us.

I’m thinking coaching salaries is a big part of the gap??? Idk what else would explain it. And for the record I do think our fundraising has gotten a lot better under BK. QB Club has sky rocketed under his leadership.
Coaching salaries, for sure. I think someone on here or twitter mentioned that their strength coach is the 2nd highest paid coach on the team after Vigen, and that's certainly not true for us here.

They have an expanded recruiting budget, too. The difference between taking recruits out individually to a high end restaurant vs. a group of recruits to Lolo Steakhouse adds up quickly.

They also have more perks for their donors. I know every big donor got Big Sky and National Championship rings just like the team, and that's not something we offer here, as far as I'm aware.

They spend more on staff travel, have more uniform/helmet combinations, from what I've heard a more robust nutrition program, etc.

I think anyone who has experienced a big pay raise knows that if you have the money, it's easy to find ways to spend it lol

A deeper dive, 12 of top 20 were BSC or MVFC.

I know Bozeman State Athletics historically (like for decades) got more state subsidies than UM Athletics. Is that still the case? Likely not, but I'm just wondering.

MSU has an 2025 updated athletics master plan and fund raising that everyone know about, they have been very public about it even when they interview MSU AD, its brought up. Its on their main athletics page. Can the increase be from sponsorships/fundraising. What about UM, Kent keeps things in a silo, unless there is an updated UM plan, only one I can find is a south campus 2007 plan on the website.
