SACCAT66 said:Honest question... IF the griz were to move up. what schools (that is in the FBS right now) would you say you are close to in the ways of talent, and that you could be competitive with. Are you thinking schools like Colorado State? or Utah State? University of New Mexico?

Tough to say based on “right now” because 85 scholarships changes things, but probably not right away. After a few cycles, I think your list is pretty accurate. I don’t think we’d win the Big 10 every other year like every single Bizon fan says the Bizon would.

Because a good majority of these G5 teams were once FCS teams where they had a good playoff system and a chance to play for a NC, but instead they all decided to leave to play in the very prestigious quick lane bowl. You chose to play with the big dogs, damn it you’re gonna play with the big dogs. That being said though, I do think the playoff should be expanded so the G5 teams have an opportunity to participate it, which is why I think they need to go to 16 teams. Take the 10 conference champions and then 6 at large bids. Just my take.
Then what's the difference? Right now the G5 is the ONLY level of football that doesn't have its own playoff system.
You really want to watch an opening round game between Alabama and Florida Atlantic? Or Clemson and Memphis?

G5 is not a Level of college football. The Levels are designed by scholarships offered.
DI FBS 85, > 70
DI FCS. 63 or <
DII 36 or <
DIII 0
If FBS G5 teams wanted to start a playoff, IMO, they would need to distinguish A unique scholarship grouping, such as . . .
DI 75-85 P5
DI 65-75 G5
DI 63 or < FCS
You’d see lot of FCS teams moving if this happened.

So, if it is these type teams, these are the Athletic budgets I found online (I am like Stugotz when it comes to reading the interwebs, so that it with a grain of salt)
UM Athletic Budget--$19 Million
Montana State Budget--19 Million
CSU Budget--- $54 Million
Utah State-- $32 Million
University of New Mexico-- $33 Million
If either the Cats or the griz want to move up, they will have to come up with a way to raise around 2 TIMES the amount they do now...

No way! A plucky new up-and-comer can disrupt the entire conference. Budget-Schmudget. We've all watched the movies. Think reality for once.

Just have to do a bang-up job recruiting those FCS feeder schools for cheap talent.

All the Dakota schools have a much higher budget. Through in Idaho, Weber and EWU
True, however, becoming FBS, would take us out of the Big Sky which would be a positive accomplishment. Further, although we currently are Division 1 in other sports, we are tainted in those sports by virtue of the FCS category in football.EverettGriz said:SACCAT66 said:Honest question... As CDA says, within a few years with 22 more scholarships, yes.
And remember, this isn't just a football conversation. We're already at that level in most sports.

Ah Yes, there is the rub (as we discussed for the past 10 to 15 years on every "Move Up!" thread).
Then we start to list the potential sources...
Double ticket prices (oh wait, they're already at FBS prices).
Soak the students (oh wait, they're diminishing).
Money from Legislature (oh wait, until hell freezes over).
Donors increase giving (oh wait, you need HOW MUCH MORE?).
Then after much bitter bickering we set it aside and start a new "Move Up!" thread. Enjoy!
