So why not have a P5 playoff, a G5 playoff, and and FCS playoff? Makes perfect sense to me and would eliminate the ONE big (non-financial) argument for not moving up.
The reason it hasn't been done, of course, is that -- while fcs and GRIZ fans continually mock them -- bowl games make a shit ton o' money, and playoffs are not going to generate anywhere near the same volume of revenue.
I don't think the bowl games those G5 teams are going to generate a shit ton of money. They're sparsely attended afterthoughts to the 7-8 major bowls out there. Once you get beyond Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, Cotton, Orange and a few others, the rest are just junk.
But they DO make shit tons of money. Not by attendance necessarily, but by advertising and sponsorships. They certainly generate tens of millions more than the fcs playoffs do. And they create economic benefits for their host cities.
The volume of games is a big reason for the revenue. There are around 40 bowl games. Unless the playoff games would have much bigger crowds and/or generate much more TV revenue, you would need 40 playoff games to break even. And you also have to factor in losing the sponsorship dollars of the bowl itself because each playoff game isn't likely to have the sponsor name. To have 40 playoff games you need 41 teams. If you estimated 20 bowl games involving G5 schools (may be less) then you need at least a 20-team playoff.
