Comparing 2025 UM vs EWU defense in conference games only:

Points given up per game:
UM: 25.1 (3rd)
EWU: 29.0 (6th)

Total yards allowed per game:
UM: 408 (6th)
EWU: 412 (7th)

Pass yards allowed per game:
UM: 287.8 (12th - Last)
EWU: 219.8 (4th)

Rush yards allowed per game:
UM: 120.3 (2nd)
EWU: 192.8 (10th)

Sacks:
UM: 21 (1st)
EWU: 11 (10th)

Interceptions:
UM: 14 (1st)
EWU: 13 (2nd)

Forced Fumbles:
UM: 5 (4th)
EWU: 8 (3rd)

Honestly, these stats are much closer than I would have anticipated. I thought UM had a much better defense compared to EWU.
This to me shows how little passing yards allowed matters. Run defense, sacks, and turnovers is what wins games.

It wasn't the scheme that failed, it was the coaches not getting the right personnel to execute the scheme and the execution of the scheme that failed.

Jimmys and Joes will always do better than Xs and Os

Tell that to Iowa State Cyclone fans--come the end of the 2025 season, they were down 5 DB's--Sound familiar ?-- and 3 LB's on their 3-3-5 defense and their-then Head Coach Matt Campbell had to take the almost unheard of step in FBS football for his 8-4 Cyclones to decline to participate in a bowl game due to a lack of healthy players--his LB's and DB's especially were decimated with injuries. I guess he didn’t have the right players executing the scheme correctly : ( !!!

Points win games. Scoring at least one more point than your opponent wins games

That's why it's called a scoreboard and not a run defense, sacks, or turnovers board.

“Pass yards are empty calories”

I’m sorry, but the single biggest and most impactful play of our entire season was a pass play we couldn’t stop when we needed to lmao

It was also a play that occurred when a top safety was out for targeting, and one safety ran into and took out another db, a corner, at the key part of the play. It was very good play by the Cat QB and receiver. I wouldn't call it "couldn't stop". And yes, it was a critical play, with a horrible result for the Grizzlies.

What was the score after that play?

Did that play look familiar? Because it happened more than once last year.
