Eric Sanders New DC

"Based on 2025 data, the Eastern Washington Eagles finished with a 5-7 record, with their defense allowing an average of 437.8 yards and significant points per game, often struggling in stopping opponents
. They ranked around the 44th percentile in defensive performance among teams in the versus sports simulator analysis. "

Stoke level is returning... love this d line hire, and am excited about the DC too.
Really? What's there to be excited about? The DL coach seems okay but, not great. They did get pressure on QBs though but, my god. Easterns defense was absolute dog shit these last few years

Comparing 2025 UM vs EWU defense in conference games only:

Points given up per game:
UM: 25.1 (3rd)
EWU: 29.0 (6th)

Total yards allowed per game:
UM: 408 (6th)
EWU: 412 (7th)

Pass yards allowed per game:
UM: 287.8 (12th - Last)
EWU: 219.8 (4th)

Rush yards allowed per game:
UM: 120.3 (2nd)
EWU: 192.8 (10th)

Sacks:
UM: 21 (1st)
EWU: 11 (10th)

Interceptions:
UM: 14 (1st)
EWU: 13 (2nd)

Forced Fumbles:
UM: 5 (4th)
EWU: 8 (3rd)

Honestly, these stats are much closer than I would have anticipated. I thought UM had a much better defense compared to EWU.

Given the circumstances that BK's future as the Griz head coach is just for 2026 - until proven otherwise - I think you have to appreciate these hires all things considered.

- A younger staff, familiar with the conference

- They automatically have far better players than they ever did at EWU

- They aren't some 70 year old dudes that BK pulled out of retirement to help their old buddy

--------

On the surface, obviously, don't love it - but there's no way they can bring in some big splash hire without the confidence they'll be here for a while.

Per my math - we still need an LBs coach right? Wonder if BK connected with Jeremiah Kose or not, I think Kose would come here if asked.

Perception probably changes when you look at the full 360 of the teams and while their defenses in conference were closer together than expected, EWU had the 3rd worst scoring offense and dead last total offense - while Montana had the 3rd best scoring offense and 5th best total offense (conference only).

It depends on which stats you want to view. UM’s old defense under Hauck was designed to give up some big plays while also creating big plays which you can see reflected in these stats clearly. First in interceptions and sacks and last in pass yards given up.

@BWahlberg @5280Griz without a doubt....agree with both of you. Stats only tell part of the story. But that part of the story is different than what I had expected. Certainly stories behind the stats. UM had a bunch of dudes injured. UM also had a handful of blowouts where backups got some action.

But also, UM played a lot of games in Wa/Griz, which is certainly helpful for the defense compared to Eastern.

One other stat. Yards/play were virtually even at 5.8 and 5.9.

I even love it on the surface. Young, did ok even at eastern, he had his group playing extremely hard in their game against UM here, and having a d line coach, with his level of experience and chops, should be a great hire as well.

Did they give up any 80 yard plays?

Eastern's defense has been awful the last couple of years so personally not a big fan of this hire, but as many have said hopefully it was more due to the situation at Eastern Washington than his coaching ability.

My first thought was definitely "EWU? Eww" but then again Wortham was fantastic so maybe there really is something in the water in Cheney holding them back...
